TOPIC: Relationship and Fellowship with unbelievers.TEXTS: 1 Cor.15:33; 2Cor. 6:14-18.
AIMS:i) To come to terms with the concept and implications of intimate relationshipand fellowship with unbelievers;ii) To strive to respect scriptural boundaries in our relationship withunbelievers;iii) To be a light to impact lives and situations of unbelievers.
INTRODUCTION: The figure of a “yoke” used in 2Cor. 6:14 teaches us clearly that there is a limit to how we should live as Christians. The yoke is a bar that joins two animals together. In this case, the two animals will move at the same pace and go in the same direction. It is not possible for the animals to go in different directions. Scriptures thus condemn the idea of believers and unbelievers having intimate relationship. Certainly, one will corrupt the other and in most cases, it is the unbeliever that prevails over the believer (I Cor. 15:33).
STUDY GUIDE1. a. How will you describe an unbeliever? Gal.4:8; Eph.2:11-12; 4:17-19.b. From the scriptures above and our texts, what do you think should be the extent of the Christians’ relationship with unbelievers?c. Using the concept of a ‘yoke’ in I Cor. 6:14, why do you think the scriptures warn against intimate relationship with unbelievers?d. Mention and discuss practically, examples of relationships with unbelievers that should be avoided.2. Discuss the dangers of fellowship with unbelievers in the light
of the following:1Cor. 15:33; 5:6. What therefore?Isa.52:11.3. How and why should we be light to shine in this dark world and be examples to challenge unbelievers to Christ, Matt.5:13-16; I Tim.4:12;
CONCLUSION: God knows that relationship and fellowship with unbelieverswill endanger our relationship with Him and thus warns us ahead of time to avoid them. Let us not think we are smart; the Spirit in us detests that in unbelievers. Heed the word of God if you truly want to serve Him.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Give a distinct distance between you and unbelievers.
MEMORY VERSE: Isa.52:11.

AT YOUR WORD.“Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:5.
Simon Peter was called upon to do something that he just doesn’t want to do. However, because it was Jesus who asked this thing of him, Peter complied.
What a night of struggle for the fishermen, when Jesus appeared by the sea shore and was going to speak to the people who were gathered there to hear Him. And as they pressed in upon the Lord, He got into Simon Peter’s boat and asked him to move away from the shore just a little. When Peter had done this, Jesus sat down and spoke to the crowd.
Following Jesus’ preaching, He commanded Peter to go out deeper so that he could let down his nets and catch a great load of fish. Peter immediately objected that he and his partners had labored all night and had taken nothing! In short, they had failed!
The inability of the fishermen to catch fishes that night wasn’t that they did not know how to fish. These men were experts fishermen and knew how to fish and where to find the fish, and yet they fished all night long and caught nothing. Their failure had nothing to do with how they were fishing or where they were fishing. Their failure came about because the Lord wanted to teach them a much needed
lesson. That lesson is that without Him, we can accomplish nothing.
Many times, our struggles and failures today are the result of our inability or the lack of the will power to do God’s business the God’s way. We have failed to realize that He is the one who should direct us in the steps to take.
We have failed to understand that we are the church of today and have all the machinery in place to do exploits for Him, and yet we are still losing ground to the devil and the world. We are guilty of trying to duplicate the activities of others instead of relying on the Lord for ourselves.
Wherefore, we need to acknowledge that when we face opportunities to serve the Lord: Our
success or our failure rests entirely on where Jesus stands in the picture. Jesus Christ said “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5.
I can imagine Simon Peter and his partners were ready to call it a day. They had fished all night long and had caught nothing. They were tired, frustrated, discouraged, and looked defeated. But when Jesus Christ came into the scene, tells Peter to do just that, Simon Peter surrendered (At His Word) to the will of the Lord and went out to fish at the command of His Word.
When they let down their nets this time, they caught so many fish that their net broke and they had to call their partners to help them get the catch loaded into the boats.
What made the difference? Obedience to Jesus, even when Peter did not want to do what the Lord asked him to do.
Brethren, there are times when the Lord asked us to do certain things that we may not want to do, however, we must come to the same place Peter came. We need to decide that regardless of how we feel about a certain matter, if the Lord has commanded it, then we will do it (At His Word).
