Seven Oaks WebsiteThe Seven Oaks website is now fully functional! It contains important school information

including staff emails, school schedules, school supply lists, PTA information, newsletters and much more! There is even a calendar that reflects events specific to Seven Oaks. This is a great resource for parents. You may even see a picture of your student on our slide show!

Please check it out by following the link below:https://www.aacps.org/Page/4973

Student Belongings Left BehindPlease be aware that all student items left behind on the last day of school will be held for

pick-up until June 29th. Any items not picked up after June 29th will be donated or discarded.

Clothing to Cash

Below is a message from Mr. Tom Hamorsky, Director of Clothing for Cash:

I am proud to announce that Seven Oaks Elementary School collected 2019.0 lbs. of clothing and shoes in April.

The following items have been brought to my attention:

1. People at several schools have been placing their clothing and shoes inside the collection bin loose.  This causes the items to become soiled and wet. Please reinforce to your students, parents, staff and community that ALL items should be put in “Plastic Bags and Tied Closed” before placing them inside the collection bin to protect their donations.

2. Someone at one school left a Mattress and Box spring outside the bin.  We do NOT accept large items or carpet.  We only accept items that can fit inside our collection bin opening and NOTHING should ever be left outside.  If it doesn’t fit in the opening, then we do not want it and it should be donated elsewhere.

The top three schools in Anne Arundel County for April are:

1st Place Seven Oaks Elementary School 2019.0 lbs.   Extra $100

2nd Place Jacobsville Elementary School 1792.0 lbs.   Extra $50

3rd Place Odenton Elementary School 1317.0 lbs.   Extra $25

If you have any questions, please contact me directly at [email protected] or 561-866-1149.

Thanks again for going green and being part of the Clothing to Cash® – School Recycling Program.

Pre-RegistrationPlease be sure to pre-register for upcoming end of year events when requested. This is

being done in an effort to cut down the wait time for families during check-in, while still following school security standards.

Also, if parents are signing students out following events it may take some time as we will need to check to be sure the adult is on their pick-up list.  We are asking parents to be patient, as this is in the interest of student safety!

Pre-KWe made it through the year! I appreciate everything that you all have done to make this

year amazing for your learners! I hope you all have an amazing summer and I wish you the best next year!

Remember Pre-K Promotion is June 12 - AM @ 9:00; PM @ 1:30!Please remember to pre-register. See you there!

Kindergarten CornerThis month we will say goodbye to Kindergarten as we prepare to become First Graders! We will

celebrate this by writing letters to our friends, making a class book of advice to the incoming Kindergarten classes, and exploring “kids choice” topics of interest through drama, dance, and art! We will investigate nature and play games with our friends to show how much we have learned this year!Last month we had so much fun exploring Camp Woodlands together. Thank you to all the chaperones and activity leaders who joined us! We could not have done it without your help!

We look forward to seeing everyone at our “awards/slide show/ picnic” day on Tuesday, June 12th from noon-1:00. Please remember to pre-register.

First Grade

WOW… where did our school year go?!!!! We are super proud of all the progress the First graders made this year. We fully explored our first- grade theme, I Am Curious About… in everything we learned and experienced.  Looking back at our year together, we fondly remember raising the Monarch Butterflies in fall, traveling around the world over the holiday season and restoring our gardens this spring. In addition, we enjoyed our off-campus field trips to Toby’s Theater, Maryland Symphony and the Baltimore Zoo.  As we round out our last few weeks together, we will wrap up our learning with our ABC of Summer and Field Day. Please dress your child in GREEN for field day and send in a water bottle.  We wish everyone a wonderful summer. Remember to READ, READ, READ and take time to create your own adventures… BE CURIOUS!

All Our Love- The First Grade Teachers

4

Second GradeIn June, second graders will be learning about how to Imagine Changing the World...By Taking

Action. In math, we will study arrays. In reading our focus will be on the understanding that second grade students can answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text (RI.2.1). Students can also participate in Literacy Center activities to apply literacy strategies for independent learning and application. In writing we will be finalizing our Poetry Anthologies! Second Graders have enjoyed the poetry study covering many styles of poetry! Please plan to attend our Popcorn and Poetry Celebration Wednesday, June 6 from 1:00-2:00 in your child’s classroom. Please check-in in the main office. Students have worked very hard and are excited to share their work with you!

With warm weather approaching quickly, please make your child dresses and is adhering to the school uniform policy daily. This includes shirts tucked in and belts. Shorts and skirts should be at least fingertip length and shoes must be closed toe.

Over the summer please continue to encourage reading. Reading pamphlets will be sent home with students with suggested titles for students entering grades 3 and 4. Be creative to keep reading fun! Some ideas include, reading by the pool, with an animal or stuffed animal, make a tent and read in it!

The Second Grade Team would like to thank you so much for your continued support throughout the school year! We hope that everyone has an amazing and safe summer. We can’t wait to see these kids as third graders!

Third GradeOur third graders are excited to finish their final marking period in third grade. We are so proud

of the growth each student has made and wish them a fun and relaxing summer. As we continue throughout the last month, our students will be very busy preparing for fourth grade.

We are continuing to work with our students on their reading comprehension skills. We will be building their overall comprehension of a variety of texts by practicing reading a text fluently and accurately, as well as expanding their vocabulary.

As writers, students will be finishing up their fairy tale writing projects. They are working to demonstrate a command of grammar when writing, use capitalization, punctuation and proper spelling. They are writing an introduction, describing characters and organizing events in their story. Students should be using dialogue and descriptions to show the response of characters to situations. They should also be providing a sense of closure while ending their story.

Our mathematicians will be building multiplication and division fact fluency and study the relationship between the two operations. In addition, we will use drawings and equations to help us solve measurement problems.

As scientists, our students will design and choose solutions that meet specific criteria for a project. They will generate and compare multiple solutions to problems. Furthermore, they will plan and carry out fair tests.

In social studies, third graders will identify an environmental issue. They will create a project checklist, develop and write research questions and collect data. They will propose and evaluate solutions that could help the environmental issue.

5

Fourth Grade  We are so excited to have embarked on this wonderful learning journey and experiences with our fourth-grade families. As we close out this school year, we want you to continue to support your students in reading. As they enjoy the summer break please encourage them to read every day so they don't lose touch of their fluency skills. In addition, to build on their math fluency we encourage they continue to learn their math facts over the summer. We thank all our parents for their support this school year and look forward to a promising school year ahead.

Fifth Grade   As 5th graders enter into their last month at Seven Oaks Elementary School, they are preparing for their much-anticipated promotion ceremony, which will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 9am sharp. As mentioned in earlier communications, dressy casual attire is recommended. Due to the large number of students, please allow time for parking, and be sure to pre-register prior to that morning. Information on how to pre-register has been sent home with students. The fifth grade teachers will be wrapping up units in all subject areas, and final grades will be prepared. Have a restful summer and best of luck in middle school.

Triple E Arts & HumanitiesWhat an exciting year it has been! Triple E (Enhancing Elementary Excellence) Arts &

Humanities is a unique cultural arts class that is about to complete its third year at Seven Oaks. We use any and all of the visual and performing arts as a lens for asking big questions about life and to help us choose projects based on different themes that we spend many weeks exploring. You might help your child remember the journey we have been on these past three years, depending on the age of your child, by bringing your child to art exhibits, puppet shows, plays, and concerts. Ask your child how artists tell stories, and why they tell stories? Ask them why the arts are important, and why did Einstein say that imagination is more important than knowledge? You might be surprised by their answers!

We hope you have a healthy, safe, and fun summer. Maybe you'll run into us at one of the many arts events going on in the region!

MediaJune is the end of our school reading incentive “Spring into Action and Read for Power!”

Students who turn in at least five spring reading logs will get a photo taken with our Black Panther. Great job to those powerful students.

June is also the start of the public library’s summer reading program. To participate in the Anne Arundel County Public Library summer reading program, register your child at the library or sign up online at https://www.aacpl.net/summer. AACPS summer reading lists are also linked here.

Don’t forget to make reading an important part of your summer. All students have access to the resources at Seven Oaks and the Anne Arundel County Public Library over the summer. To access the public library resources students will use their SAIL number – the prefix code 21997080 and their student number.

Happy reading!  Enjoy the summer.

Music NewsOur students at Seven Oaks have worked hard all year to learn and develop new skills in music.

They have accomplished a great deal. First Grade enjoyed an outstanding performance of Peter and the Wolf by the Annapolis Symphony.

Our Chorus had a fabulous performance on Tuesday, May 22nd. This is a incredibly talented group of students. They performed some extremely difficult music. I am so proud of their achievement.

Have a wonderful summer!

Thank you for your support of the music program at Seven Oaks Elementary.

ArtStudents are working on finishing the year strong with some artwork.

Instrumental MusicAttention all parents!

If your child will be entering 3RD, 4TH AND 5TH GRADE, this fall, they will be eligible to enroll in instrumental music classes.  Students who are enrolled in instrumental music typically receive two 30 minute classes per week. Band and Strings are graded classes which meet as pull-out during the school day. Therefore, students who enroll MUST be willing to make a COMMITMENT to attend all classes when they are present in school and spend approximately 10-15 minutes of daily practice in addition to performing in an evening Winter and Spring Concert.  The instrumental music schedule usually alternates regularly so students do not always miss the same subject.   3rd grade students instrument choices include violin, viola, and cello.  4th grade students can choose to continue in strings or start as a beginner on a band instrument or string instrument. Band instrument choices include flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, tuba, and baritone. Upcoming 5th grade students can continue in strings or band or start as a beginner on a band or string instrument. It's never too late to start!    Participating in an instrumental music program has many benefits: * develops mental and physical coordination * develops self-confidence * develops responsibility and self-discipline * develops learning skills needed for success in every other academic subject * develops social skills and the ability to work with others  * develops communication skills

Please note that band/string classes are free but parents are generally responsible for obtaining their own instrument and needed supplies in addition to completing and submitting an instrumental music registration form for their child, which are REQUIREMENTS in order to participate. There are a FEW school owned instruments that are reserved for students with FINANCIAL NEED to borrow for the duration of the school year depending on instrument availability. Another source to obtain an instrument is through any local music store who rents instruments or through a family member or friend or neighbor who is no longer using it.   Look for a paper work and instrumental music supply list in early fall to enroll your child in instrumental music! Even if your child is a current band and string student, who is planning to continue on their instrument next school year, they must fill out a new enrollment form for band/strings in order to continue.

Continuing Band and String students, don't forget to keep up your instrument skills over the summer by continuing to practice 10-15 minutes daily!

Contact Information If you have any questions, please email Ms. Reisler at [email protected]  Thank you. I look forward to teaching your child instrumental music!

Notice to Parents and VisitorsAll parents/visitors must report to the main office before proceeding into the school. The

safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us.  Our school will be utilizing a system for checking in all visitors.  The system is called: V Soft by RaptorWare.  When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID to a staff person in the school office.  This card will be scanned and the following information will be collected:  your photo, your name, and your date of birth.  This information will be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country.  If your name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the use of your ID, then access to the school will be denied.  On future visits to a school, in which you have previously registered, you will only be asked to show your ID as your name will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors.  You will also be asked to sign out with the office upon leaving the school so that we know you have departed the building.  You will be required to check into the system even if you are only coming to school to pick up your child.  The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept on a secure server.

We ask that you say your morning goodbyes at the front door and allow your child to proceed to his/her class independently. We also ask that you help your child be responsible for bringing all materials needed every day, including lunches, instruments and homework. Forgotten items can be brought to the main office and will be delivered to your child at lunch time by a staff member. Your cooperation in this security effort is greatly appreciated.

Should you have any questions, please contact James Batten, Supervisor of School Security, 410-222-5083 or [email protected].

1 Attendance Regular school attendance is an important factor in student success. As a parent, you can

encourage proper attendance by ensuring that your child gets adequate rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and has adequate time to catch the school bus or walk to school.

There are lawful reasons for absence from school. Whenever your child is absent, you must provide a note of explanation to the school within three days of your child’s return to school. Absences of five consecutive days or more require a physician’s note.

School hours are from 8:15 a.m. until 2:40 p.m. Students who walk or are driven to school should plan to arrive between 8:00a.m.-8:15 a.m. Students should not be dropped off before 7:55 a.m., as there is no supervision until this time. All students are expected to be in their classrooms by 8:15 a.m. so as not to be marked tardy. We highly recommend that all communities form walking groups so students can walk together and adults can take turns supervising the walk to and from school.

10

Outside FoodIn consideration of wellness issues and student allergies, outside food is discouraged to share with classmates.

Early DismissalsWe apologize for the inconvenience, but for the safety of our students, early dismissal of

students will only occur before 2:20.
