How to Play Hi Ho Cherry-Oh!

Materials: Cherry Tree Workmats; Basket Workmats; 20 cubes for each player to represent the cherries; playing cards.

Object of the Game: To be the first player to pick 20 cherries from your tree and fill your bucket.

How to Play:

Each player takes a tree workmat and a bucket work mat. Put 20 cherries on the tree mat.

Pick a card: ‘One cherry’-pick one cherry from your tree and put it in the bucket; ‘Two cherries’-pick two cherries from your tree and put it in the bucket; ‘Three cherries’-put three cherries in your bucket; ‘Four cherries’-put 4 cherries in your bucket; ‘Pig card’-take two cherries from your bucket and place them back on your tree (If you have only one cherry, put that one back. If you have none do nothing.); ‘Spilled bucket’- dump the cherries out of your bucket, place them back on your tree and start over.

The first player to get exactly 20 cherries calls out “Hi Ho! Cherry-0” and they win the game!

How to Play Barnyard Math!

Materials: Barnyard playing board for each student; 3 dice; cubes or other manipulative to cover the numbers on the board.

How to play: Each player takes a Barn playing board. Play with a partner. One child rolls the 3 dice and finds the sum of the 3 numbers. Cover the sum on the barn with a cube. Then the other person rolls the dice and finds the sum of the 3 numbers. If a number is covered, they lose a turn. Continue until all the numbers are covered, or after a set amount of time, the one with the most cubes on their board is the winner.

Help Mrs. Wishy Washy get her animals in the pens. Can you use your brain to help you figure out this logic problem?

Mrs. Wishy Washy had 5 pens and 15 animals. She needs to put all the animals in the pens. She only wants 10 animals in each row. The animals like each other, so you can put more than one kind of animal in a pen. Each pen should have at least one animal. How can she put the animals into their pens? Show how you solved this problem.

Fill in the calendar with the month and the numbers. Draw a seed to show the first day you planted. Then

put an “X” on each day that you are waiting to see a sprout. When you see a sprout draw a on that day.

Teacher Notes……It is intended that this Menu will take several weeks to complete. Introduce only 2 of the activities at a time. (Math in Social Studies and Math in Science will take longer to complete, it would be good to begin with these two.) Allow the students choice to

Page 21: education.fcps.org  · Web viewOr BARNYARD MATH! Use the pattern blocks to create a farm animal or Mrs. Wishy Washy. What shapes will you use? How many of each shape did you use?

complete one of the activities. The next week, introduce 2 more allowing them to complete one of the activities of their choice. Continue until you get through all the activities. When you introduce the last activity, you can give them a choice to go back and complete any activity that they didn’t get to work on.

(Math and Social Studies) K.CC.A.3 Read about two farm animals on “PEBBLE GO”. Identify facts that use numbers. Create a poster about your animals using those numbers.

Have the students get on the website Pebble Go. You will find information about farm animals. The students can listen to the facts about each animal. They will need paper, crayons, markers, or other supplies to create their poster. Encourage them to create a poster that everyone will be able to see and read. They should create something that is neat and legible.

(Logic) K.OA.A.3; K.OA.A.4; K.OA.A.5; SMP 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Help Mrs. Wishy Washy get her animals in the pens. Can you use your brain to help you solve this logic problem?

Copy the 15 animals on card stock and laminate. Create a “field” using green paper and position small paper plates to represent the pens. (Refer to the illustration at the bottom of the recording sheet.) The students can use the animals and the field to solve the problem. After they come up with a solution they can record their answer on the attached recording sheet.

(Problem Solving) K.CC.A.1; K.CC.B.4; K.NBT.A.1; SMP 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 There are many breeds of horses. Horses are measured by “hands”. One “hand” is about 5 cubes tall. Look at the chart and figure how many cubes tall a Shetland Pony, and an Arabian would be. Where would you fit in? Calculate how many “hands” tall are you?

The students will need large butcher paper and cubes. A ‘hand’ is actually about 4 inches. I chose to use “about 5 cubes” so that the students could think about counting by 5’s. Allow them ways to explore how they could solve this problem. You can provide them large pieces of paper so that they could trace themselves when they are figuring out how many hands tall they are. Talk about how we measure our height from head to toe. It is different for a horse.

Page 22: education.fcps.org  · Web viewOr BARNYARD MATH! Use the pattern blocks to create a farm animal or Mrs. Wishy Washy. What shapes will you use? How many of each shape did you use?

(Math and Science) K.CC.A.2; K.CC.A.3; K.CC.B.4; SMP 1, 5, 6 Plant a bean plant for Mrs. Wishy Washy’s Farm. Collect Data in a journal to see how many days it will take for the seed to sprout and then record your plant’s growth!

Students will need a bean seed, cup and soil for planting. Copy the plant journals. You will need a few blank pages to attach at the end to allow them to record the height of their bean plant.

(Math and Literature) K.OA.A.3; K.CC.A.2; SMP 1, 2, 3, 4Read the story Mrs. Wishy Washy by Joy Cowley. Solve this problem.Mrs. Wishy Washy washed some more animals. They had in total 16 legs. What animals did she bathe? Copy the recording sheet. Have manipulatives available if the students wish to use them as a tool to help them solve this problem.

(Math Games) K.CC.A.2; K.CC.B.4; K.OA.A.5; SMP 1, 2, 4Play the game HiHo Cherry-O! Or BARNYARD MATH!

Copy the game pieces on cardstock and laminate. For Hi Ho! Cherry-O! you will need to copy 2 or 3 of the playing cards so that there are enough cards for a game.

(Geometry) K.CC.A.1; K.CC.B.4; K.G.B.4; K.G.B.5; K.G.B.6; SMP 1, 4, 5, 6Use the pattern blocks to create a farm animal or Mrs. Wishy Washy. What shapes will you use? How many of each shape did you use? How many total vertices? How many sides?Students will need paper to trace their farm animal and pattern blocks. After they make their animal, they will fill out the chart.

(MATH DATA) K.CC.A.1; K.CC.B.4; SMP 1, 2, 3, 6Choose 4 farm animals. Ask at least 12 friends what their favorite farm animal is. (Or choose something else that you want to find out about something related to farms or Mrs. Wishy Washy!) Collect the data and represent it in a graph. Write about what you find out!

Page 23: education.fcps.org  · Web viewOr BARNYARD MATH! Use the pattern blocks to create a farm animal or Mrs. Wishy Washy. What shapes will you use? How many of each shape did you use?

Encourage the students to come up with their own question. (Would you like to be a farmer? Did you ever hear the story Mrs. Wishy Washy? Would you rather be a ____ or a ___?, etc.) After they have gathered their data, show them different graphs. They will need to make sure their graph has a title and that it is labeled. You may choose to give them a template for transferring their data.

(Write about math) K.OA.A.2; K.OA.A.5; SMP 1, 4, 6Pretend you are Mrs. Wishy Washy. Write a word problem that you think she might have to solve on her farm.
