CHRIST THE HOPE OF JEWS AND GENTILES

8For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,l 9and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.”m 10And again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”n 11And again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him.”o 12And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.”p 13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.q

PAUL THE MINISTER TO THE GENTILES R

14I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another.s 15But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God t 16to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.u 17In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God.v 18For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed,w 19by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricumx I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ;y 20and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation,z 21but as it is written, “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.”aa

PAUL'S PLAN TO VISIT ROME BB

22This is the reason why I have so often been hindered from coming to you. cc 23But now, since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you,dd 24I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while.ee 25At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. ff 26For Macedonia

and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem.gg 27For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings.hh 28When therefore I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected, I will leave for Spain by way of you. ii 29I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ.jj

- Why has Paul been hindered in coming to Rome? Why is he now free to do so?- What do we know about the Jerusalem church that might have a connection with the need

to bring a “contribution” to them? What does it mean that they were pleased to do it?- Why were those Christians living in Macedonia and Achaia (Greece) indebted to those in

Jerusalem? How does this related to the urging of Paul for the Romans to live in harmony with each other?

PAUL REQUESTS PRAYER

Amen.nn

- For what does Paul request prayer?- Why is this ironic?

a Review and Introduction: Paul, having introduced himself to the Romans and explained the predicament of mankind denial of God and the resulting origin of sin in Chapter 1, having shown that all, both Jew and gentile are under God’s judgment in Chapter 2 because no one can obey the Law in its entirety, showing in Chapter 3 that since no one is righteous by his own works all are in need of a Savior and that salvation comes only by grace through faith in the Messiah Jesus, demonstrating in Chapter 4 that the rule of salvation by grace through faith has always been God’s plan by telling the story of Abraham, explaining in Chapter 5 that through the Messiah’s actions on the Cross we can be reconciled to God and have eternal life, demonstrating, in Chapter 6, that this salvation by grace is not a reason or excuse to sin all the more because through faith we have been saved from the mastery of sin and taken a new master in God, having shown in Chapter 7 using an example from the law of marriage that the Law is just but that we have been freed from its condemnation, extolling in Chapter 8 the joys and comfort of the present life in the Spirit, despite our sufferings, and the hope of eternal life, explaining in Chapters 9-11 that the hearts of the Jewish people have been hardened so as to bring the full measure of gentiles to salvation, that the Jewish people will be brought back in when the full measure of the gentiles has been gathered and that the Jewish people had been led astray by the belief that they could be saved by their own obedience to the Law, urging all believers in Chapter 12 to make their whole lives a “living sacrifice” to God through love, explaining in Chapters 13-15 that part of being a living sacrifice is to submit to lawful authority and to each other, he concludes his letter with a prayer that the Roman Christians would have a spirit of unity, both Jews and gentiles, and that they would overflow with joy, peace, trust and hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

b Luther’s Preface: In chapter 15, St. Paul cites Christ as an example to show that we must also have patience with he weak, even those who fail by sinning publicly or by their disgusting morals. We must not cast them aside but must bear with them until they become better. That is the way Christ treated us and still treats us every day; he puts up with our vices, our wicked morals and all our imperfection, and he helps us ceaselessly. Finally Paul prays for the Christians at Rome; he praises them and commends them to God. He points out his own office and the message that he preaches. He makes an unobtrusive plea for a contribution for the poor in Jerusalem. Unalloyed love is the basis of all he says and does.

The last chapter consists of greetings. But Paul also includes a salutary warning against human doctrines which are preached alongside the Gospel and which do a great deal of harm. It's as though he had clearly seen that out of Rome and through the Romans would come the deceitful, harmful Canons and Decretals along with the entire brood and swarm of human laws and commands that is now drowning the whole world and has blotted out this letter and the whole of the Scriptures, along with the Spirit and faith. Nothing remains but the idol Belly, and St. Paul depicts those people here as its servants. God deliver us from them. Amen.

We find in this letter, then, the richest possible teaching about what a Christian should know: the meaning of law, Gospel, sin, punishment, grace, faith, justice, Christ, God, good works, love, hope and the cross. We learn how we are to act toward everyone, toward the virtuous and sinful, toward the strong and the weak, friend and foe, and toward ourselves. Paul bases everything firmly on Scripture and proves his points with examples from his own experience and from the Prophets, so that nothing more could be desired. Therefore it seems that St. Paul, in writing this letter, wanted to compose a summary of the whole of Christian and evangelical teaching which would also be an introduction to the whole Old Testament. Without doubt, whoever takes this letter to heart possesses the light and power of the Old Testament. Therefore each and every Christian should make this letter the habitual and constant object of his study. God grant us his grace to do so. Amen.

c Hodge on Romans 15:1-13: The first verse of this chapter is a conclusion from the whole of the preceding. On the grounds there presented, Paul repeats the command that the strong should bear with the infirmities of the weak, and that instead of selfishly regarding their own interests merely, they should endeavor to promote the welfare of the their brethren. This duty he enforces by the conduct of Christ, who has set us an example of perfect disinterestedness, as what He suffered was not for Himself, v. 3. This and similar facts and sentiments recorded in the Scripture are intended for our admonition, and should be applied for that purpose, v. 4. The Apostle prays that God would bestow on them that harmony and unanimity which he had urged them to cultivate, vs. 4-5. He repeats the exhortation that they should receive one another, even as Christ had received them, v. 7. He shows how Christ had received them, and united Jews and gentiles in one body, vs. 8-13. - Consider whether Hodge is correct that Paul seeks to “enforce” anything here, which sounds more like the error of legalism that Paul decries. Rather Paul is encouraging the Romans to seek to please God through their behaviors and by pleasing fellow believers. Also, Hodge refers to the Messiah as being “disinterested.” Yet what Paul is talking about here, and elsewhere in his letters, is not being disinterested (neutral or diffident) but putting the interests of others above one’s own – something entirely different. Hodge amplifies his commentary on verse 2 as follows: Let each one of us please his neighbor, for his good for edification. The principle which is stated negatively at the close of the preceding verse, is here stated affirmatively.

Page 7:  · Web viewFor the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the

We are not to please ourselves, but others; the law of love is to regulate our conduct; we are not simply to ask what is right in itself, or what is agreeable, but also what is benevolent and pleasing to our brethren. The object which we should have in view in accommodating ourselves to others, however, is their good. For good to edification most probably means with a view to [a person’s] good so that [the person] may be edified. The latter words, to edification, are, therefore, explanatory of the former; the good we should contemplate is their religious improvement; which is the sense in which Paul frequently uses the word edification (Rom. 14:19 “So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.”; 2 Cor. 10:8 “For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed.”; Eph. 4:11-14,29 “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds[a] and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. . . . Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”) It is not therefore, a weak compliance with the wishes of others to which Paul exhorts us, but to the exercise of an enlightened benevolence; to such compliances as have the design and tendency to promote the spiritual welfare of our neighbor.

r Hodge on Romans 15:14-21: The Apostle . . . assures the Romans of his confidence in them, and that his motive for writing was not so much a belief of their peculiar deficiency, as a desire of putting them in mind of those things which

they already knew, vs. 14-15. This he was the rather entitled to do on account of his Apostolic office, conferred upon him by divine appointment, and confirmed by the signs and wonders, and abundant success with which God had crowned his ministry, vs. 15-16. He had sufficient ground of confidence in this respect, in the results of his own labors, without at all encroaching upon what belonged to others; for he had made it a rule not to preach where others had proclaimed the Gospel, but to go to places where Christ was previously unknown, vs. 17-21.

s 14: 1 Cor. 1:5 “that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge—“; 1 Cor. 8:1-10 “Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." This "knowledge" puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God. Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "an idol has no real existence," and that "there is no God but one." For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"—yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols?”; 1 Cor. 12:8 “For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,”; 1 Cor. 13:2 “And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”; Eph. 5:9 “(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),”; 2 Th. 1:11 “(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),”; 2 Pt. 1:12 “Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.”; 2 Pt. 3:1 “This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, ”; 1 Jn. 2:21 “I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.”;

t 15: Rom. 12:3 “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.” Gruber translates verses 15 and 16 thus: “Nevertheless, because of the grace that was given to me by God that I should be a pu8blic servant of Messiah Yeshua to the gentiles, serving the good news of God as a Kohen [the OT priests], I have written emphatically to you on some points, so as to remind you, so that the offering up of the gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Ruakh Kodesh [Holy Spirit].”

u 16: Is. 66:20 “And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations as an offering to the Lord, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord.” ; Mal. 1:11 “For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will bet great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts.”; Acts 9:15 “But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.” ; Rom. 1:1 “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,”; Rom. 11:13 “Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry”; Rom. 12:1 “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”; 1 Cor. 10:17 “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.”; 1 Cor. 12:27 “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”; Gal. 2:9 “and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.”; Eph. 5:2 “And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”; Php. 2:17 “Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.” Paul here likens himself to a priest in the Temple, with the believing gentiles themselves being the offering to God. St. Augustine saw the Eucharist in a similar way, “If you want to know what is the body of Christ, hear what the Apostle [Paul] tells believers: ‘You are Christ’s body and His members’ [1 Cor. 12:27]. If, then, you are Christ’s body and His members, it is your symbol that lies on the Lord’s altar – what you receive is a symbol of yourself. When you say ‘Amen’ to what you are, your saying it affirms it. You hear [the priest say] ‘The body of Christ,’ and you answer ‘Amen,’ and you must be the body of Christ to make that ‘Amen’ take effect. And why are you a bread? Hear the Apostle again, speaking of this very symbol: ‘We, though many, are one bread, on body [1 Cor. 10:17].” Augustine, Sermon 272 (PL 38.1247)

And your zeal has stirred up most of them. But I am sending the brothers so that our boasting about you may not prove empty in this matter, so that you may be ready, as I said you would be. Otherwise, if some Macedonians come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident.”; 2 Cor. 11:9 “And when I was with you and was in need, I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain from burdening you in any way.”; Php. 4:15 “And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only.”; 1 Th. 1:6-10 “And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”; 1 Th. 4:10 “for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more,”; 1 Tm. 1:3 “As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, ”; It is interesting to note that of all the Christian communities mentioned in the Scriptures, only the Christians of Jerusalem (Judea) are mentioned as needing or receiving financial aid from other Christian communities. And it is only the Jerusalem community of which it is written that “they held all things in common” ( Acts 2:44 “And all who believed were together and had all things in common.”). William Bradford’s diary of the founding and early years of the Plymouth Plantation (Bradford, William, Of Plymouth Plantation 1620-1647, Modern Library 1952, pp. 122-23) notes that since the founding of the colony in 1620 the colonists had followed the example of the Acts 2 Church and farmed the land in common – and starved. “For this [way of farming land in common] was found to breed much confusion and discontent and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort. For the young men, that were most able and fit for labor and service, did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children without any recompense. The strong . . . had no more in division of victuals and clothes than he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice.” But in 1623 each family was allotted its own plot of land, and allowed to keep the products of its own labor. As a result: “This had very good success, for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been by any means . . . and gave far better content. The women went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn; which before would allege weakness and inability; whom to have compelled would have

When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined. But on taking leave of them he said, "I will return to you if God wills," and he set sail from Ephesus. When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples. Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
