From Our Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ, During the coming season of Lent, we will be learning about hope in the midst of suffering. Our teacher will be Pastor Ed Dobson (see above photo). For many years (1987-2005), Pastor Dobson was the lead pastor at Calvary Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 2001, he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig ’s disease). In 2007, he wrote a book called Prayers and Promises When Facing a Life-Threatening Illness. In 2009, he spent the whole year living like Jesus, which included keeping the Sabbath and following all the Jewish religious holidays. His experience resulted in a wonderful book called, The Year Of Living Like Jesus.

In 2011, Ed began telling his story of living with the challenges of ALS in a series of short films. The series is entitled, Ed’s Story: A Film Series about Hope. During our Wednes-day evening Lenten services we will be showing these films. I am certain that you will be deeply touched by Ed’s story. Our 2015 Wednesday evening Lenten services will be contemplative in nature: Taizé music, silence, candlelight, and Ed’s Story.

Sunday Morning Bible Study

Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so.This is a great and simple truth we learn early in life. As adults we tend to complicate life and have trouble with simple truths. We want to know how and when God loves us. We want to feel His presence in our lives and some-times that is just not the case. We may even wonder if that simple truth is still true.

God knew we would have these times so He gave us a guide. He composed a love letter for us. We call it the Bible. He also summed up His book in a single verse. John 3:16 states " God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."

On Sunday mornings at 9:45 we have been looking at the Bible through the lens of John 3:16. We are going through the Bible, book by book, stopping at 3:16 in every book and seeing if we can see God's Love  in the verse or in that chapter.

For example in Genesis 3:16, God is chastising Eve for eating forbidden fruit. It does not sound very loving until you realize two things: 1) God did not immediately kill Eve for her sin, and 2) Eve is told she will bear children. God is promising a future and a family for Adam and Eve. In Leviticus we covered 3:6 thru 16 where God set the regulations for a fellowship offering. This is the first time we are invited to share in a meal in the presence of the LORD. It's a foreshadowing of our communion. In Esther we covered a large portion of the book and we saw how God rescued His people by setting circumstances into place that allowed for the salvation of the Jewish people. On Sunday, February 1, we will start up again with Psalm 3 and Proverbs 3:16.

You are invited to bring your favorite Bible and your insights to the lounge on Sunday mornings between the services. This is an open forum type of study where your thoughts and insights will aid in everyone learning from differing points of view. Come and see if you can see how and when God is showing His love to you through the examples we will be covering.

THE BIBLE STUDY FOR FEBRUARY WILL BE Session 5, “Repent and Forgive,” found in the January-February issue of Gather magazine. The theme verse is Psalm 51:10: “ Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.”

In this session we will read about King David’s many sins against God and his human subjects and about the dynamics that led him to repent and renew his dedication to God’s will. We will also think about times we have needed to turn back to God.

The Bible Study will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Lounge on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015. All are welcome.
