Providing Justification for Attending A Conference

Attending an industry conference is an excellent training tool, but getting approval to travel to and participate can sometimes be difficult. How can you justify the time off work and travel expenses? While the return on investment is high, you may need to validate to management your reasons for needing to attend.

DRJ has compiled a kit that will help with those needs. We have included several helpful items, including a return on investment letter and a customized letter to management.

It is important management knows the valuable education you will receive at DRJ’s conference. When completing the forms, you should the classes, workshops and courses you will attend and how they will be beneficial to you and your organization. A few ideas to include when compiling your request:

Create a trip report after the conference. This report should discuss the sessions you have attended and how you will apply those to current projects in your organization. Once your managers see how much you have learned during the conference and how it can be applied in your organization, they will be more likely to send you to a conference again. Offer to share the information with co-workers. Bring home your conference materials to let co-workers share in the conference experience. If desired, you can create a slideshow or other presentation to report to others in your office. DRJ provides complete conference materials to our attendees online. In addition, some class material is handed out directly through speakers. In your request, include the benefits of having this material return to the office with you. If you’ve attended the conference in the past, make note of changes you have implemented in your organization based on information you learned at the conference. Be sure to include mention of specific sessions that were instrumental in the changes. If possible, list any cost savings that resulted from the change. A Customized Letter To Management

I would like to register to attend Disaster Recovery Journal’s Spring World 2014 conference. This conference will be held March 30 – April 2, 2014 in Orlando, Florida. It offers a number of educational opportunities that I feel will be beneficial to me and to our organization. These opportunities include in-depth sessions, hands-on exercises, workshops and courses. I will be able to attend a number of sessions that directly apply to my ongoing projects at this organization.

Many of the sessions will offer tips on reducing business continuity costs, allowing me to implement cost-saving measures upon my return. DRJ’s conferences have been valuable to thousands of contingency planners from around the world. In the more than 20 years that we have hosted conferences, more than 10,000 business continuity professionals have received a stellar education through our sessions, workshops, courses and more.

DRJ conferences offer the lowest attendance cost of any in the industry, providing a highly cost-effective method for gaining education, certification, networking and awareness training.

At a typical DRJ conference, attendees participate in more than 25 hours of educational sessions, as well as more than 15 hours of direct networking events. Industry professionals who can impart their years of experience onto attendees lead sessions. Many of these speakers are employed as consultants and educators in the industry, often charging more than the conference fee for a single visit with a client.

Most DRJ speakers are accessible to conference attendees both before and after each session, allowing attendees to gain unprecedented one-on-one time with industry experts.

Overview Of Conference:

This conference was hosted by Disaster Recovery Journal and was held at the Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. The conference theme was “Strategies Ensuring Resiliency in a Risky World.” The focus is on all aspects of business continuity, including global resiliency, compliance, cloud computing, cyber security, IT, risk analysis, resiliency, communications, crisis planning, awareness training, certification, industry regulations and much more.

The conference is structured into three and one-half days of sessions, with group events on two evenings. During the conference, attendees are able to choose from general sessions, workshops and breakout sessions. A mock exercise session is also an option.

A concurrent exhibition is held onsite during the conference, allowing opportunities to visit with booth personnel and investigate new products and services.

All conference material is included in the conference fee, as are six meals, refreshment breaks and two hospitalities.

Why Did I Choose To Attend?

This conference is the largest dedicated to business continuity, attracting hundreds of planners from around the world. The conference has an excellent reputation for providing information at the lowest cost in the industry.
