A. Rationale

Management 142 needs to be updated in order to remain current with the technology the course focuses on and so it aligns with four-year schools that our students will transfer to after graduation from the College. The inclusion of the following topics ensures that the content of the course is transferrable: global e-business/collaboration, IS and organizations, ethical issues in IT, IT infrastructure, business intelligence (databases, telecommunications, internet, wireless technology, securing information systems), e-commerce digital goods and building information systems. These updates have necessitated revisions to the course description and student learning outcomes.

Current Course Description: This course provides students with an understanding of the systems analyst’s job requirements and skills, and familiarizes students with the methods of creating and maintaining a management information system. Students are also exposed to management functions and project management techniques and will trace the five phases of a systems study. Data-gathering methods are studied, as well as interviewing and documentation techniques, cost analysis, hardware and software acquisition and the finalization of systems implementation.

Proposed Course Description: This course focuses on the role of information technology as a business enabler and covers management information systems applications, including customer relationship management systems, enterprise systems, e-commerce applications, transaction processing systems, business analytics, and emerging technologies. Students evaluate the organizational fit and suitability of business applications and interpret the interaction between information technology, customers, processes, data, infrastructure, participants, and environment in an organization. The ethical challenges of information technology and the evolving role of management information systems in the organization, and the role and careers of MIS professionals are also covered.

Weekly Simulation: Students apply Management Information Systems concepts to a simulated small business: a candy store called The Sugar Shop. The Sugar Shop begins by automating some business processes and using IT to overcome competitive forces. Students apply what they've learned about information to the Sugar Shop. For example, they identify target markets from data sources, protect company data from hackers, choose appropriate cloud computing resources, create database columns (attributes) for suppliers and candy types, and determine appropriate website metadata.

Quizzes: Students answer a wide variety of questions based upon chapter content.

Case Studies: Students are presented with "real-life" scenarios (often based upon news events) and use critical thinking to answer MIS-related questions.

Weekly Industry Analysis: Each student analyzes a specific industry (hotels, retail stores, fast food, airlines, etc.) and researches how MIS concepts are applied within their industry. Students also learn about other industries by researching and offering additional examples related to industries that their classmates are following.

Final Project: Students create industry-specific PowerPoint presentations (summative assessment) based upon their Weekly Industry Analyses.

Example Simulation Question:

Systems Development Methodologies - Building the Sugar Shop App

As the owner of The Sugar Shop, you've decided that you would like to create an app (for IOS and Android devices). You are not exactly sure what you would like the app to do, but you believe you want it to do some of the following:

Allow customers to view current inventory and order products Allow customers to create and purchase their own "designer" chocolates by combining

one ingredient from a list of 5 fruits and one ingredient from a list of 5 savory herbs/spices

Contact "customer service" with an immediate video call View 360 degree videos of you (the owner) demonstrating your artisanal candy-making

skills Integrate seamlessly with your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter feed. Send notices promoting sales and events. Allow customers to have fun by uploading photos of themselves and then have that image

rendered as a simulated chocolate rabbit.

You don't have a hard deadline for debuting the app. You just know that you would like to get something out in the next 6 months or so.

You know that this isn't something you can do yourself, but you would like to be heavily involved in the process to make sure that the program turns out the way you'd like. You decide to hire an outside firm to help you build the Sugar Shop App!

Your old friend from high school tells you that her son-in-law, Terrence, is starting his own software development firm, and he would be happy to help build the app.

You met with Terrence and described your vision for the app. Terrence took copious notes throughout the meeting.  He tells you that he will develop the app using the Traditional Systems Life Cycle (also known as "waterfall") methodology. He's ready to begin today and he'll get back to you in 6 months when the app is ready to go live.

Answer the following questions:

1) Are you comfortable with Terrence’s Traditional Systems Lifecycle Approach?2) If you are comfortable, explain why the approach is a good one. If you are not

comfortable, suggest an alternative systems development approach (be sure to include the name of the approach) and explain why it's a better method for creating the app. Be specific.

Final Project: PowerPoint Industry Analysis Presentation

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY! THIS IS YOUR FINAL!

If you have any questions, call or email me ASAP. I might not be available the evening that your final is due, so be sure to reach out to me well before this project is due. I am usually

available weekdays at 215-751-8834.

Your project is due on December 10, 2018 at 11:59 PM and must be submitted via Canvas.

I cannot accept late assignments.

Your final exam for this class requires that you create a PowerPoint presentation document. You will not be delivering an actual “stand up” presentation. You will only be creating and submitting the presentation material.

Rationale (why am I asking you to do this?): The creation of this presentation gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their thorough understanding of key course concepts and then to apply those concepts to a particular industry. It is expected that it should take a fairly well-prepared student around 10 minutes to create each slide in the PowerPoint presentation. If a traditional final exam takes several hours of studying and then 1.5 hours for the actual exam, this presentation alternative should be less time intensive. (How much time should it take for you to complete this assignment? 10 minutes per slide x 15 or 18 slides = 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours in total. If you are NOT well-prepared, it will take you longer!)

Presentation Guidelines - Follow these Instructions Carefully:

Before you do anything, find the attached rubric, read it, and print it out. You will be graded against this rubric, and so you will want to check your work against the rubric before hitting the submit button!

All pages must refer to information systems in the industry you covered throughout the semester. Do not veer off topic!

Your presentation should be 15-18 (no more, no less) pages, including a cover page. Your presentation should be submitted as a PowerPoint file.  Your writing should be in "bullet point" sentences or phrases. Please do not include long

paragraphs, but avoid "one or two-word answers" as well. Every page MUST have a title at the very top (even if it is a continuation from a previous

page) to indicate the page’s topic. Otherwise, I will not know what the page is about.  If you find that it is difficult to convey your thoughts completely in bullet points, use the

“notes” sections (there is a notes section for each page) to explain your bullet points in more detail. Do not use the "notes" feature for more than a few pages. I really want you to stick to this as a PowerPoint presentation. If you do include notes in your presentation, be sure to number the pages and let me know which pages your notes are on when you

8

Page 9: €¦ · Web viewCOMMUNITY COLLEGE OF PHILADELPHIA. Course Designation. MNGT 142. Course Title. Management Information Systems. Abbreviated Course Title for Banner. Management Information

submit the assignment. This way, I will look for them (but only use notes if you absolutely have to).

Follow the basic guidelines for creating a good PowerPoint presentation. Keep the slides uncluttered; do NOT use a busy looking background or distracting graphics. The simplest background is best. Use an easy-to-read font. Don’t crowd the page with too much text. Use bullet points as much as possible but be sure you are answering each question. It’s fine to use graphics to help enhance what you want to say or to make your presentation attractive – but avoid anything “cutesy” or frivolous. Don’t include more than 5-6 bullet points on a page (unless each bullet point is a very short one).

You are being asked to define certain terms in your own words and to provide examples of information technology at use in the industry you followed for this course.

When I say that I want you to define a term using your own words, I mean just that. I don't want a definition from the book, the dictionary, or someplace online. I want to hear how you would define the term. I don't care if your definition is brilliant or clumsy. I am interested in whether or not you understand the term. You should not use citations with your definitions since you won't be looking up the definitions.

When you use a source to provide an example, then you must include a citation and a hyperlink or a reference to a page in the textbook; otherwise, you are plagiarizing. If you completed your discussion posts, this should be super easy! Feel free to draw on those helpful classmate responses you received!

Be careful that you don't just "copy and paste" a bunch of links into your assignment without explanation. When you provide an example, use your words to explain the example. I need to see your words and thoughts on every page. Do not submit a compilation of "stuff" you found on the web; instead, prove to me that you understand and can apply the material we learned during the semester.

Be as specific as possible with your examples. For example, don't just say that ERP software can handle HR. Name a specific HR process that ERP software can handle.

To help you locate the work you should have already completed, I put the week that we covered each topic in parentheses next to each of the assignment requirements.

The PowerPoint presentation is drawn almost entirely from class discussion questions. It is perfectly okay to create your presentation by re-using material from your existing discussion posts – so long as you answered the discussion questions correctly.

Please follow my instructions for pages 1 and 2 of your assignment. After that, just follow the assignment in order. You can combine more than one topic onto one page although some topics might require more than one page. Just keep the total to no more than 18 pages.

Page 1: Cover page: The title of your presentation will be "Management Information Systems in the (name of your industry) Industry." You should also include your name, the date and course name/number, and my name.  For example:

“Management Information Systems in the Airline Industry, John Doe, MNGT 142 - Dr. Sirkis, December 5. 2017”
