Background

India being one of the biggest populations has the largest number of child labours under the age of 14 in the world. Although poverty is often cited as the cause underlying child labour, Other factors such as discrimination, social exclusion, as well as the lack of quality education or existing parents‟ attitudes and perceptions about child labour and the role and value of education need also to be considered. 60 per cent or more girls dropped out before completing their five years primary education. There are also concerns relating to teacher training, the quality of the curriculum, assessment of learning achievements and the efficiency of school management. Given the scarcity of quality schools, many children drop out before completing five years of primary education; many of those who stay on learn little.

As per the report of “Annual Status of Education” 2012, 67 % of fifth standard student don’t know to read 1 to 100, 52% student leave the school before fifth standard, 65 % of fifth standard student don’t know how to multiply and 86 % of fifth standard student don’t know how to division. 55 % of eight standard student don’t know properly read to English. World has recognized India as economic super power. Urban India is shining, at the same time millions living in the slum area are struggling for getting the basic education. With the proposed project on E-Learning /Smart Class, we try to bridge this gap by providing quality education to poor slum children. To eliminate poverty education is an only tool by which people can earn more, know how to raise standard of living and have a vision of better life.

The Concept: Multimedia based Teaching

Smart class is bringing digital revolutions in the classrooms. Teaching and learning has indeed become very interesting and effective. E-learning/ Smart Class project by Balajee Sewa Sansthan is an initiative to enhance and promote quality learning at primary level of education through rich, student-centred, technology driven learning.

The aim is to make Balajee evolve as a sustainable & scalable system of education that ensures high quality on a mass scale at a moderate cost through interactive multimedia based learning. Balajee focuses on the development of institutional model and capability to run a large number of E-Learning classes for children in government primary school having less access to technology based education, and demonstrate the functioning of its approach in a credible manner. The project is designed to bridge the gap of quality education with access of technology. The curriculum has been designed in the language which is easily understood by large number of students.

The traditional chalk and board method have been made more effective, supported with the Hi – Tech multimedia presentation and animation technology. Balajee Sewa Sansthan is the only organisation in the city to headway through the concept of Smart Class in government primary schools.

For the benefit of the under marginalized kids, the Smart Class concept has been introduced from class 1 onwards at government School, as any age group of human beings learn at a faster pace if listening, watching and reading are done simultaneously.

The modules are embedded in a template that allow the teachers to teach a chosen lesson in class, frame by frame, with engaging and instructionally sound animated set of Visuals while retaining complete control on the pace of delivery.

Since the child learns in a self-directed way, from the systematic materials provided, teacher absence or occasional unavailability may not be a tragedy.

Nature of Project

“E learning centre” Project is the first of its kind in government schools in Uttarakhand providing multi-model system of high quality education, encouraging more enrolment in schools and improving teaching standards in urban areas of Uttarakhand.

Need Assessment of the Project

Advances in information technology, and changes in society, are creating new paradigms for education and training. These massive changes have tremendous impact on our educational and training systems.

India is currently having a population of 1.21 billion people, out of which 833 million live in rural areas, as per the provisional data from 2011 Census.

By the current Census definition, anyone above the age of seven who can read and write with the understanding in any language is considered ‘literate'. The giveaway is that it is not necessary for the literate person to have received any formal education or to have attained any minimum educational standard. This is a huge conceptual weakness that calls for a radical course correction.

Based up the report of “Annual Status of Education”, we need to take measure to make learning and teaching more interesting. One of the most common resources in the classroom is the textbook which sometimes is not sufficient to create interest of the students. Also the Audio/Visual mode of teaching will have the focus on Tone as well as graphics.

Report: ASER 2017

Keeping above evidences in mind there is a need to bring effective education among the children belonging to the underprivileged families and areas. Traditional model of teaching in government primary schools is not sufficient to make students learning friendly. As the syllabus of different standards is more becoming application based there is a clear cut need to adopt innovative education technique in government schools.

Project Goals

Our main goals of this project are:

1. Enrollment: All the eligible children of the slum must be enrolled in the school in 1st standard.

2. Retention: Every enrolled child must complete the elementary education up to 8th grade. There should not be any dropout.

3. Quality Education: Children should get Quality Education and joy of learning.

4. Elimination of Poverty: By providing basic primary education and basic skills, they will be able to earn more and come out from poverty.

Target group: Rag picker, bagger, street child, Child Labor, HIV/AIDs, out of school and Government school student etc.

Age group: 6 to 14

Project Innovation:

The present scenario in the almost all government schools in plain textbook based. In the proposed E-learning project, Balajee sewa sansthan proposes to use multimedia tools for teaching students the concept of Mathematics, Science & English. Also adoption of Activity Based Learning will be a boon for schools where there are only 2 teachers appointed for all five classes. These innovative measures ensure outcome based learning for students & not just the regular learning following the syllabus of book. There is a quarterly assessment framework in the project, where in every quarter students will undergo an assessment to count the progress made with project E-learning.

This makes headlines, bolded/highlighted text, subheadings, bulleted lists and other devices that draw attention much more important. Writing short “chunked” paragraphs is also extremely helpful overlong, wordy ones.

Audio, Visual and Beyond

While much of how instructors teach in a traditional classroom can’t be directly transferred to a virtual environment, there are a variety of other tools that can be used to adapt.

With eLearning you have a much greater range of media to use: simulations, interactions, scenarios, and visual storytelling. But you have to use this media sparingly so as not to overwhelm the learner with too many bells and whistles.

These visual elements must all be considered for a well-rounded eLearning course:

Font: Styles, sizes, italics and bolding all make a difference.

Color: Colors need to be complementary but also highlight specific elements.

Graphics: these include icons, symbols, photos and illustrations.

Moving Graphics: Animations and videos are powerful tools but must be well done to appeal to modern learners.

Operational Model:

What makes project E-learning by Balajee unique is the incorporation of Information Technology for dissemination of knowledge. Balajee appoints one local teacher at each of E-learning centre for one academic year for doubt clearance during the lecture and helping students to understand the animated PPT of topics & videos better. The role of this teacher is very important in a way that helps students to understand the subject matter in a better way with help of multimedia based presentations and also to clear their doubts which were not clarified during the online lecture delivery. These tutors are also responsible for making this E-Learning model workable in centres with maintenance of hardware in schools. The teachers are also responsible to contact parents of students in PTA meeting updating the progress of students at individual level.

Balajee designs curriculum in such a way that every single topic of Maths, Science or English is covered in two classes of one hour each. First class is a mix of multimedia power point & activity based learning. Second class deals with solving examples & exercise from the same chapter. Balajee E-Learning model aligns with simple user centric design core competency. The central location of projector in the classrooms allows students at the school to view live or lectures in power point format provided by physical tutors. The White Board covering in front allows the tutor as well as student to solve practical problems in class. The onsite facilitator assists our remote teacher in controlling the pace of lecture presented to the students.

In terms of hardware infrastructure, one room in each government school will be converted into E-Classroom equipped with one laptop, projector, white board, speakers for audio and internet connection depending upon the availability among BSNL broadband, BSNL Wi-Max & 3G communication services by any telecommunication provider. For continuous supply of electricity there has been a provision of inverter in the classroom.

What are the metrics to measure the intended benefit of the project?

Balajee Sewa Sansthan has derived following metrics to measure the intended benefit of project:-

Establishment of E-learning centers in low income group areas of Dehradun.

Teachers training on usage of ICT in education.

Mid line assessment on learning outcomes in comparison to ASER-2014. End line assessment measuring the increment in learning outcomes as compared to base line

assessment.

Number of students enrolled at E-learning centre.

Feedback collected from parents during the project course to measure the impact of multimedia based education.

Feedback collected from respective schools where students attend formal classes.

Project Monitoring

Balajee has a dedicated team with expertise in E-learning to manage & monitor the project. There will be involvement of Project coordinator & Advisory board nominee from Balajee Sewa Sansthan to monitor the performance of project as per decided milestones.

There will be one joint committee consisting of Balajee Executive Director, Advisor Member of Balajee & representative of Funding Agency to monitor the progress of project on quarterly basis. Organization will send a monthly progress report to Funding Agency highlighting the progress made on project.

How sustainability of the project is planned to be ensured.

Since the project is social in nature & does not involve any fees recovery from targeted community, there will be a minimum fund required to carry the operation of these E-learning centres. With the increment in learning level of students, this centre will keep attracting more & more poor students for multimedia based study.

One of the major investments is procurement of assets & developing lesson plans as well as student assessment framework which will be done in first year of operations. cost of running these centres is quite less & with a minimum viable funding support from Funding Agency, the project may benefit thousands of students for years.

Details of the Ongoing Project

Objective:The objective of the project was to provide quality education for primary standard kids belonging to the weaker section of the society through E-Learning/ Smart Class.

Need Assessment Survey:

Before starting the project a general survey in the slums areas near Rispana River was done to analyze the situation and understanding the need of these kinds of classes. Awareness sessions were also done for the parents who were motivated to send their kids to this school.

During the survey, it was observed that the people in these areas cannot afford the heavy fees of private school which are using modern and digital way of teaching and education. Therefore, after the survey the actual need and identification of school were done as most of these kids reside in and nearby areas of Rispana River. Both the schools where our E learning centres are running are adjacent to these slumps.

Progress Monitoring of Student:

Proper verbal and written test are taken for all classes to monitor their progress.

1. Curriculum-Based Monitoring

Curriculum-based monitoring is done to effectively and accurately monitor student progress and teaching methods. The teacher takes the tests on a regular basis to measure student progress. If the grades rise during the given time period, the teacher knows the teaching methods are effective and the students are learning. If the grades drop, the teacher knows the teaching methods are not effective and she needs to present materials and concepts in different ways so that students learn and retain the material.

2. Regular Evaluations

Regular evaluation through classroom response, written work and student-teacher interaction can identify areas where a student needs further help to achieve successful learning.

3. Observation and Interaction

Individual interaction between teacher and student provides the teacher with opportunities to evaluate progress and retention. This interaction can also provide the student with an opportunity to evaluate their own progress and communicate any concerns or needs to the teacher.

Project Impact

The effect of project were many, students are improving gradually.

Increase in enrolment and attendance are also increasing. Students are learning things with interest More aware about the cleanliness, hygiene and good habits etc.
