Acknowledgements:

The Scholarship and Bursary Guide was originally compiled by the Association for the Advancement of Blacks in Health Sciences and by the Association of Black Employees of Hydro. We acknowledge their forward thinking in providing a compact guide to assist the communities’ students in accessing financial support for the continuation of their schooling. The guide provided a listing of awards given for exceptional achievement.

Recognizing and encouraging our youths’ abilities and supporting their needs are one of the responsibilities of all communities. It is for this reason that Community Unity Alliance is continuing this tradition by providing the 2008 edition of this guide. It is the hope of the CUA that this will provide a base for the educational advancement of many students in our communities.

The Community Unity Alliance (CUA) is a not-for-profit organization designed to assist community based groups in becoming independent.

By providing supervision, training and administrative support, CUA helps create autonomous community oriented resource groups for our emerging multi-ethnic population. The formation of community based groups assists in the preservation and enhancement of ethnic identities within the Canadian Mosaic. As ethnic populations become more firmly established, community groups acquire more support from their community members and gradually become self-sufficient.

CUA partners to provide resources, experience, skills and training to assist in this path to independence.

Atlantic School of Theology BursariesBursaries are available to support students’ attendance at the Atlantic School of Theology. The G. Russell Hatton Bursary is awarded to a student of the school who requires financial assistance. CBTU Ann Newman Scholarship Fund This fund is awarded by the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists to a youth in the Black community who has graduated from an Ontario high school and is registered to attend a post-secondary institution. Criteria includes: a 500-word essay submission, involvement in community activities, paid or volunteer work experience, secondary-school marks, academic achievement, and financial need. Although there is one scholarship awarded, the money will be divided if two applicants are equally qualified. All submissions should be mailed or hand-delivered. Community College Award This award is administered by Nova Scotia Department of Education’s African Canadian Services to a student enrolled full-time in a recognized community college, trade school, or private career college. Students whose programs are two years must apply for the funding in the second year by submitting an application, and this funding will be awarded based on satisfactory academic standing. It aims to encourage students to pursue higher education and serve others. Hon. Jean Augustine Scholarship

The Honourable Jean Augustine was born in Grenada. She immigrated to Canada in 1960. Before entering politics she was an Elementary School Principal with the Toronto District Catholic School Board. She has served on numerous Boards, including the Board of Governors of York University, the Board of Trustees for the Hospital for Sick Children, the Board of Directors of the Donwood Institute, the Board of Harbourfront Corporation, and as Chair of Metro Toronto Housing Authority. She was also National President of the Congress of Black Women of Canada.

In 1993, Ms. Augustine became the first African-Canadian woman elected to the Parliament of Canada. She was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada, Chair of the National Liberal Women’s Caucus for three years, Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), Minister of State (Multiculturalism and Status of Women) and Assistant Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Ms. Augustine was the Founding Chair of the Canadian Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development, Chair of the Microcredit Summit Council of Canadian Parliamentarians, Chair of the Canada-Slovenia Parliamentary Group, founding Chair of the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association, and Canada-Caribbean Parliamentary Friendship Group. She is the recipient of many awards including the YWCA Women of Distinction Award, the Kaye Livingstone Award, the Ontario Volunteer Award, the African Canadian Achievement Award, the Rubena Willis Special Recognition Award, the J. C. Holland Award for Community Service, the Toronto Lions’ Club Onyx Award, the Martin Luther King Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award, the 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada 2009, the Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA) Trailblazer Award, the University of the West Indies Luminary Award. In 2009, she was inducted as a Member of the Order of Canada.

Hon. Jean Augustine holds a B.A and M.Ed. and received Doctor of Laws from University of Toronto, University of Guelph and McGill University. She is the mother of two daughters and grandmother to two grandsons.To honour her achievements, and leadership in Housing and Women’s issues the MTHA staff, the friends and family of Jean Augustine have established annual scholarships in her name at Centennial College and George Brown College facilitated by Community Unity Alliance.

John Brooks Community Foundation AwardsOffered to students to recognize their achievement and encourage the pursuit of excellence. Eligible students will have a B grade or better in several subjects or an overall mark of 75% or better. Awards are also considered for students who demonstrate outstanding ability in specific areas, such as community service, arts or sciences.

Lincoln M. Alexander AwardsAwarded in honour of Lincoln M. Alexander, a former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario to recognize young people who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in eliminating discrimination. The eligible student must have made a significant contribution towards eliminating prejudice or discrimination. The contribution should be sustained and innovative, demonstrating leadership and the promise of long-term improvement or greater public awareness, in the area of anti-racism.A Student Award is presented to a secondary school student attending an accredited provincial secondary school and planning to enter a post-secondary institution as a full time student who is nominated by his/her school.

A Community Award is presented to a resident of Ontario, between the ages 16 to 25, nominated by a community organization or agency that works extensively in the area of anti racism.

Leon Bynoe Scholarship – Seneca

Leon Charles Bynoe was an all-star athlete and basketball coach who died suddenly during a basketball game in 1986. To honour his athletic abilities and scholastic achievements, the staff of Metro Toronto Housing Authority (MTHA), along with family, friends, residents and the University of Toronto, established an annual scholarship in his honour. The award is for the MTHA resident of African heritage and student of either the University of Toronto or Centennial College who best exemplifies Bynoe’s scholarship and dedication to learning.Bynoe was born in 1957 in St. Vincent, West Indies. He immigrated to Canada in 1973 and began his athletic career playing football at Vaughan Road Collegiate and basketball at Oakwood Collegiate. He won a scholarship to Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, where he was chosen Concordia’s Athlete of the Year and First Team All Star in the Quebec University Athletic Association.

Leon transferred to the University of Alberta where, in 1982-1983, he led the U of A Golden Bears into the playoffs for the first time in three years and was a Canada West University Athletic Association All Star and an All-Canadian candidate. He was one of four nominees for the coveted U of A “Wilson Challenge Trophy” in 1988.

After receiving his Bachelor of Administration and Leisure Studies degree, Leon played for the Scottish Solripe team for two years. He returned to Canada to work as Assistant Basketball Coach at

Centennial College and occasionally coached basketball in his native St. Vincent

Leon developed and coordinated many sports, recreation and leisure activities for children. He also organized and taught at basketball clinics across the country. At the time of his death in 1986, Leon was a popular recreation coordinator for the MTHA.

Leon Bynoe is remembered not only as an outstanding basketball player and a fine student, but also as a great leader and a champion for young people.

Michael McKenzie ScholarshipMichael McKenzie is a very bright and articulate intellectual. His career is a sterling example of leadership progress, individual sacrifice and public service. His personal motto is simple: desire, dedication and discipline.

A product of both the Toronto public school system and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, McKenzie has quietly racked-up, year after year, an impressive array of awards and accolades. Despite living with the debilitating effect of Sickle Cell Anemia, it is often said that Mr. McKenzie has achieved more by the age of 25 than most people will ever accomplish by 75. His impressive accomplishments have not only earned him a reputation for being a hard worker and critical thinker, but he has also acquired solid recognition as a role model and community leader.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND: Mr. Mckenzie is an economist and a career public servant.

He has been employed by Statistics Canada since 1992. He has also served with the Treasury Board Secretariat, National Defence and with the Ontario Ministry of Housing via the Metro Toronto Housing Authority.

He obtained his Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wilfred Laurier University in 1989. Mr. McKenzie then completed his Masters Degree in 1991 majoring in Economics and Public Policy Analysis at Carleton University in Ottawa.

About the Scholarship

The SABE Scholarship is awarded to student of West Indian or African

Heritage who are members of SWIAA (Seneca West Indian African Association) and are returning students with a demonstrated need and a GPA of 3.0 or above.

Applicants must demonstrate leadership through involvement in college activities and/or in their community.

Applicants must submit their most recent transcript, a letter of application supporting their request and two references from any academic advisor/counsellor, professor or representative of a community organization.

Visual Merchandising Arts is a program designed to teach students display, promotion, and advertising techniques which create retail sales. Students learn to translate their 2 and 3 dimensional designs into practical displays. They learn merchandise co-ordination, mannequin presentation, graphics, and photography. Field Placement is an integral part of the program. Students are required to complete 110 hours in a satisfactory field placement during the third and fourth semesters.

Purpose:To encourage and assist a full time 2nd year student in the Visual Merchandising Arts Program with a $500.00 bursary. This will be awarded to a student who has participated in the creation of a centre piece for the CUA Scholarship and in the Caribana construction and design. This student must have demonstrated a strong commitment to the success of these projects and the community in general.

Shernett Martin Scholarship FundShernett Martin is a bright and incredibly talented young lady. Shernett has focused her life on achieving her goals despite living with sickle cell disease. Shernett is passionate about educating the public on sickle cell disease through awareness and public speaking engagements. She is currently writing and directing a documentary on sickle cell disease and organizing a summer program entitled CASAS (Creative Arts for Sickle cell Anemia Students). At the age of 21, Shernett founded Ebony Wood Theatre Group out of the frustration she felt for students experiencing racism and bullying in schools. After writing a play entitled ‘Today’s Lesson”, Shernett’s theatre group toured high schools across the GTA bringing the message of anti-racism to high school students. Shernett attributes her impressive accomplishments to her amazing and supportive parents, husband, sister and her strong faith in God.

The Shernett Martin Scholarship is designed to encourage and assist those with Sickle Cell Anemia to undertake post-secondary study at a College or University of their choice. Sickle Cell Anemia is a debilitating, life-threatening disease that affects the red blood cells. The Scholarship will aim to assist students with the disease to undertake their studies without having a financial burden.

Professional Background: Ms. Martin is currently a teacher with the Toronto District School Board After completing her Teaching Degree at York University, Ms. Martin returned to Jamaica to

“give back to her country of birth” and taught Sociology, Math, Computers, and English at Clarendon College in Chapelton.

Ms. Martin has taught at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology (Newnham Campus, Yorkdale Campus School of Communication Arts).

Ms. Martin sits on the York Region District School Board’s Race Relations Advisory Committee.

Ms. Martin is co-author and editor of “Community Role Models Resource Guide” published by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Toronto Media Profile.

The Community Police Liaison Committee is a group of volunteers working in partnership with the Toronto Police Service to be proactive in community relations and to serve as a resource to the police and the community.

The 32 Division Community Police Liaison Committee is proud to introduce a fund raising initiative to support our future leaders.

In today’s society, our young people are faced with many challenges and therefore it is imperative that we provide them with every opportunity to achieve their goals. Within 32 Division, we have priority neighbourhoods where our youth struggle to overcome many adversities, including financial barriers that impede them from pursuing post-secondary education.

One deserving student every year will receive $ 1,000 to assist them in pursuing their post secondary education. The student will be selected by a committee which will include a senior officer from 32 Division. This young person will be presented with the bursary at a Scholarship Award Gala sponsored by the Community Unity Alliance.

CRITERIA:

These annual bursaries will be awarded to a minimum of five students in the amount of $500 each.

The program grants bursaries to allow students to participate in five-week immersion courses in English or French at accredited universities.
