Minister Moore, Mr Laporte, distinguished
guests, ladies and gentlemen, boys and
girls.
Good afternoon. Bon après-midi.
Canada.
3
It’s not every day that I can use the word
“launch” in the presence of honest-to-
goodness Canadian astronauts.
But that’s exactly why we are here today:
to officially launch the Life in Orbit: The International Space Station exhibition that
was developed by the Canada Aviation and
Space Museum for the Canadian Space
Agency.
4
I want to begin by emphasizing the
importance of the Museum’s fruitful
relationship with the Canadian Space
Agency.
This Life in Orbit exhibition, which expands
and improves its predecessor exhibition, is
another significant step forward in our
partnership.
5
Our partnership also includes at the
exhibition entrance the display of the
Canadarm that flew aboard the Space
Shuttle Endeavour. And there is the Space
Discovery Centre on the Museum’s
mezzanine level.
When you visit Life in Orbit: The International Space Station you will see,
experience, and better understand the
6
important work Canada does and
contributes to Space research and
exploration.
One of our goals at the Museum is to tell the
human stories of innovation. This exhibition
shows, demonstrates, and lets you
experience what it’s like to live and work in
Space.
7
Cette exposition déborde d’occasions
d’apprentissage concrètes.[This exhibition features many hands-on learning opportunities.]
l’écoutille principale.[You will feel what it is like to enter the ISS by the entry hatch.]
8
panoramiques.[Or view the Earth through the panoramic windows of the Cupola.]
You will experience what it’s like working
with your hands while wearing pressurized
spacewalk gloves.
9
Or you can manipulate the Canadarm2
robotic arm through a training simulator.
The exhibition even has a number of Space
Station items on loan from the personal
collection of Canadian Astronaut Robert
Thirsk, for which we are grateful.
10
l’équipe de développement de l’exposition.[I’d like to thank everyone who worked on the exhibition, and I would like to
mention by name the Core Project Team.]
11
• Shelley Boudreau and André Dessaint
for managing the project
• Rénald Fortier and Erin Gregory for their
curatorial input
• Erin Poulton for Interpretive Planning
• And Gabrielle Trépanier for accessibility
and testing.
12
Creating this exhibition shows the power of
collaboration. The other individuals and
companies that made this exhibition a
reality are mentioned on the credit panel at
the exhibition entrance.
du Canada.[I also would like to mention that the work of this museum, including this
exhibition, is made possible in part through financial support of the Government
of Canada.]
13
Our Museums are places where the past
meets the future, and I am very pleased that
school children are with us today.
I am sure that the astronauts are reminded
of their youth and are wondering who
among you will carry into the future
Canada’s proud tradition of Space
exploration and achievement.
14
One of our goals for this exhibition—Life in Orbit: The International Space Station—
is to launch the dreams of Canadian youth
to one day travel in Space.
Merci. / Thank you.
