We are pleased to announce that Bishop Daniel Thomas, Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese, has given permission to move ahead with the restoration of our 111- year old church pipe organ.

After careful consideration of two organ companies, we have decided to contract the project to the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio.

We learned that Schantz built and installed this organ in 1905. They came highly recommended:

"Dear Sirs: The large organ which you built for our new St. Bernard's Church is a great success in every respect. The tones are very rich

and pleasing. All who have heard it say it is a grand organ.

I am more than satisfied with your work and therefore recommend the Schantz Organ very highly to all who contemplate buying a first-class instrument.

Yours truly, J.B. Broun, Pastor" (1866-1915)

The restoration of this "first-class instrument" and reawakening of those "very rich and pleasing" tones first heard by Fr. Broun and our predecessors will begin June 1st (if not before). We are pleased that the work will be done by Schantz Organ, the original builder. The project is to be completed by December 31 of this year.

We are grateful to the Lester Brothers who first assessed our restoration needs and gave us a cost estimate for the project. Their estimated cost however did not include extraneous work we would have to provide, such as rebuilding cabinets. With Schantz Organ that is taken care of in our contract, however, their cost is $40,000 more than originally estimated. This increase will

also include a brand new 3-manual organ console, not a rebuilt one, to last for generations and allow for features to be added years from now. With the restoration and refinishing of all the organ pipes they will also replace that huge pipe damaged years ago and still missing when you look up. And we have their commitment to complete the project in an acceptable time frame; about six months.

A century ago a local Akron newspaper, Weekly Times Democrat, reported that in our church organ there are over 80,000 holes in the wind chests to hold all the pipes. And that some are "pipes large enough for a man to crawl through" and others "not much bigger than the last joint of one's little finger". It's awesome!

Therefore, we (the Diocese, Schantz Organ, and our parish staff) have the utmost confidence that they will meet our restoration needs for generations to come. It is our hope that Fr. Broun would be proud of our desire and sacrifice to give to God Almighty nothing but 'first-class' worship on a first-class instrument. Amen?
