Welcome to the first step in achieving your goal of moving beyond your current circumstances. I urge you to make the decision to do what it takes to have joy and peace in your life. As your Christian Counselor, I will help you learn how to walk out of what holds you back through recognizing what holds you captive. Once you recognize and vocalize what has been holding you back, hope comes in. When you have discovered hope, you will find that Hope will give you the strength to achieve victory in your life.

Recognize, hope and victory are defined as follows: To recognize is to perceive clearly, make acknowledgment of, and

realize what you need to change.

Hope is desire accompanied by expectation of fulfillment.

Victory is the overcoming of an enemy, achieving success in a struggle against odds.

WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN COUNSELOR?

Your Christian Counselor is a guide and friend who will help you navigate areas of your life in which you have not been able to achieve victory. This will be obtained by identifying the challenges in your life that have been holding you back from obtaining peace. Through personal discovery and inner healing, you can begin to live the life that has eluded you for such a long time.

The counseling relationship is mutual. The relationship starts with viewing the information packet. When the decision to meet has been made, a meeting time will be set. The first meeting is an introduction to review the information packet and decide if the relationship is a good fit for both parties.

Your Christian Counselor is not a state sanctioned counselor, therapist, psychologist or medical professional licensed in the secular industry but has obtained a Masters of Ministry in Christian Counseling and can operate in an ecclesiastical nature only.

It is important for you to understand that as a Christian Counselor, I have the life experience and education to help you find what you are looking for. If I recognize that I don’t have the experience in the areas needed for you to achieve your goals, I will then refer you to someone who can help you accomplish your goals. - Dr. Angela McCurdy

There are three types of Counseling: Secular, Integrated Christian, and Biblical

Secular psychotherapy can be found on any street corner. It is common to man, and is based on “man’s best ideas on how things work”. This is what people learn in secular graduate school programs – the field of psychology and humanistic approaches to people’s difficulties in life.  

Integrated Christian counseling, whether people call it that or not, is also commonly found. These are good Christian people who have taken their secular degrees and training and “integrated” them with Scripture and prayer as they apply them to counseling hurting people. Many of them are very well intentioned and believe they are providing “the best of both worlds”, but they are NOT providing real, authentic Biblical counseling. They, in essence, try to “smush together” Scripture and secular psychology to help people. 

Authentic Biblical counseling relies exclusively upon the Truth and Power of God’s Word for counseling human problems as guided by God’s Holy Spirit in the Counselor’s office.

Biblical counseling, defined in one sentence, is “a process of intense discipleship aimed at changing people’s hearts through the truth and power of God’s Word and the ministry of His Holy Spirit. “A process of intense discipleship” is required because we tend to be stubborn, slow-to-change, sinful people (Jeremiah 17:9). “The truth and power of God’s Word” is required because God’s thoughts about our problems (Isaiah 55:8), and therefore HIS counsel to us, is the only truth there is for the healing of our hearts and lives. “The ministry of His Holy Spirit” is required because what happens in the Counselor’s office is never effective if offered in our own wisdom and strength – we are guided by His Spirit and by HIS Word in every counseling session (if we are to be humble and effective instruments in His hand!). These are the reasons that authentic Biblical counseling is the only counseling approach that works – Scriptural counsel that brings about real, permanent healing and transformed lives, marriages, and families.   And nothing else that the world has to offer - DOES!

Isaiah 55:8 “My ways are not your ways, and My thoughts are not your thoughts. As higher than the heavens are from the earth, that much higher are My thoughts from your thoughts and My ways from your ways”. It is clear that God does not think like us (to which we should say “hallelujah!). 1 Corinthians 3: 20 “What is foolishness to God is wisdom to man; what is wisdom to man is foolishness to God” Not only does God NOT think like us, but His ideas about how things operate often diametrically oppose ours.

There are only two clear choices from which to counsel people: God’s Word, or man’s ideas – and one has virtually nothing to do with the other!

After the initial appointment, each appointment following will be conducted in a 1-hour time frame. Some appointments may extend to 2 hours if needed, however the majority of appointments are kept to the 1-hour time frame. Appointments can take place via Skype. It is preferable for local clients that the first appointment is done in person. There is no charge for the first session. Subsequent sessions will require a set fee (see fee schedule). This fee can vary or may be eliminated if there is a hardship. A fee will be expected for a missed appointment if no emergency applies (i.e. unexpected change in work schedule, illness, breakdown of vehicle, etc.).

Each session is a process to afford you the opportunity to recognize your core issues, to develop a plan of overcoming that which holds you back and to learn how to live a new way. There may be given homework assignments which could entail reading.

It is important that you understand that this ministry is not state sanctioned professional counseling. I am not a medical professional, clergy or a professional counselor and am not licensed or insured as such. I have a Masters of Ministry in Christian Counseling which is of an ecclesiastical nature only and I am certified as a Fitness Nutrition Coach

Short Biography

Angela Mathews McCurdy’s Georgia lineage dates back to the 1700’s where her mother’s family was among the original settlers of Savannah, Georgia. She married Bruce McCurdy in 1990 and moved to his home state of California. While in CA in the year 1992, Angela accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. From then on, she searched for ways she could best serve His will. As a couple Bruce and Angela experienced short term mission work in Moscow and Mexico. These experiences ignited a hunger to be in full time service for Christ. Thirteen years later they moved back to Savannah and within months, she accepted the position of Director of Community Relations for the Old Savannah City Mission, an inner city gospel rescue mission. For several years, Angela saw firsthand the devastating effects of toxic emotions, self-abuse and hopelessness. The path that was taken by so many not only affected ones’ spirit and soul but the effects on the body were deadly.

It was becoming clear to her where she could best use her life experience and her calling was now taking shape: helping those heal who were emotionally wounded along with addressing ways to heal the body. But

before Angela could help others she had to face her own need for healing. After attending a weeklong conference on inner healing in March of 2005, almost immediately she experienced a remarkable degree of spiritual, emotional and physical healing. Now added to her quest of emotional and spiritual healing, was added physical healing where she now knew that complete healing was not possible unless a triune approach was taken: healing of spirit, soul and body. The first step taken was allowing the Holy Spirit to work in her heart the healing that He started during the weeklong conference.

In 2006, she became a volunteer instructor with Healing Streams, a ministry of reconciliation and inner healing. Today she is an integral part of her church, Harvest Light Ministries. God has given her a deep passion for the hurting. Her credentials include 13 years as a trainer and motivational speaker for small business owners, along with training and motivational activities for pageant competitions. For several years, she co-hosted the noon day talk show “Midday” for WSAV TV. For inspiration to those who want to step out but think they are too old, at age 51 Angela began completing her formal education. As of 2013, she had obtained a Masters of Ministry degree in Christian Counseling, certified Fitness Nutrition Coach and a PhD in Theology.

To those who are hurting and searching for answers Angela puts it this way, “I spent countless years hating who I was and wishing I were someone else; someone better or different than who God created me to be, longing to be healthy in all areas of my life. I grieved over all the years I had lived in estrangement from the love of God. But through the grief, I learned how to stop being my own enemy and befriend myself through the grace and love of God. I live joyfully today because that ache has been removed and acceptance has taken its place. Now I reach out to others and share keys to receiving and living the life that God created us to live. Spiritual, emotional and physical healing is our birthright in Christ. So my question to you is this: how much more of your life do you want to waste on fear, self-hatred, bitterness, anger and regret? How long have you been physically sick and have not found answers or relief? Do you say in your heart, “change is not

possible, I have tried”? I say to you change is possible if you are ready and willing to do the work. Notice I highlighted and underlined the word “if”. Change can and will happen but only if you are willing to press in for your freedom. God will meet you with great grace; He just needs you to keep moving forward!

In getting to the heart of the matter, I found that the word “HEART” is the key word. It was my heart that was wounded and getting in the way of my healing. By the time I was 15 years old, I had taken my first drink, first drug, was responsible for a 17-year-old boy dying and attempted to take my life for the first of two times. From that point until my late 40’s, my life was filled with self-hatred, self-abuse, doubt, fear, resentment, distrust of others, blame and a host of many other toxic emotions. I was filled with debilitating rage which resulted in ill health and many broken relationships. All I wanted in life was to have peace which always eluded me. So I know what it’s like to strive for peace and find none, to run from my problems and never escape them, and to live with chronic depression and hopelessness. I felt alone, I was controlled by fear and I was too proud and afraid to reach out and ask for help. Today I know that one of the enemy’s greatest weapons over us is isolation - the constant resounding words “don’t tell anyone.” Keeping my problems secret was the surest way for the enemy to keep me in bondage. I finally found “The Truth.” This “Truth” set me free from depression, fear, debilitating headaches and severe food allergies along with crippling negative self-talk.”

The “Truth” will liberate you to live the life God created you to live. The question is: are you truly ready to do what it takes to make that happen? Are You? All my hopes, dreams and blessings for you………”

Ministry Goals

As a Christian I believe that God is personally involved in the life of every believer in very deliberate and thoughtful ways. When our problems cause

enough pain to cause us to actively seek counsel, we have probably been focusing our attention for some time on physiological, psychological or financial pressures, marital, family, or work relationships, or other issues of our external living environment. It can be very difficult even for mature believers at times, to be able to see where God is in the midst of certain trials, and to trust Him and cooperate with Him through difficult circumstances so that He can bring us to the love, joy, and peace at the other side of our valley.

The fact is that most of our problems have a spiritual component and can be worked through better with mature biblical counsel that helps us draw near to God even in our own human weakness. We are created in God’s image and can only feel complete and fulfilled through a covenant relationship with God through his son Jesus Christ.

As a minister of the Gospel, I am concerned with the spiritual, emotional & physical needs of people I counsel. My main goal is to share my time with those who desire to move forward and who are willing to take a fresh look at that which binds them and holds them back from receiving all that God has for them.

Since God is the real authority in healing, and He gives us the resources to change, I believe our time together should involve praying with my client about his/her challenges and looking to the authority of the Bible for guidance. In this way, I seek to encourage building a dependency on God. I believe one can find forgiveness for the past, strength and comfort for the present and hope for the future by trusting the Lord daily to meet needs and heal emotional wounds.

I try to reflect the character of Jesus and to love those to whom I minister as He does. I teach them how to work through personal issues and to develop and nurture a stronger relationship with the only true Healer of body, soul and spirit: Jesus Christ.

Statement of Faith

I Believe:

The Bible is the inspired Word of God, the product of holy men of old who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.  The new covenant as recorded in the New Testament, I accept as the infallible guide in matters pertaining to conduct and doctrine (2 Timothy 3:16; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21).

There is one God, eternally existing as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Gen 1:26, Gen 3:22, Isaiah 11:12, Matthew 28:19)

The Lord Jesus Christ is deity, born of a virgin, that we are redeemed by His atoning death through His shed blood, that He bodily resurrected and ascended into Heaven, and that He will come again in power and great glory. (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23, Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51)

The Lord Jesus Christ is the only begotten son of God, sent into the world to redeem man from sin (John 3:16).

Man must be born again by confessing Jesus, God’s son, as Lord and repenting of the sin we are born into because of Adam’s original sin (Genesis 3, Romans 3, 5, 10:9-11).

People are saved through a direct, personal encounter with the risen Lord, at which time they are regenerated by the Holy Spirit. This event I hold to be an experience, rather than a doctrinal supposition.

We are to spread the Gospel of the kingdom (Romans 14:17) wherever possible and by whatever means God puts at our disposal (Matthew 24:14, Mark 16:15-20). We are to begin at home and spread the good news throughout the whole world.

God loves us and desires to have an intimate relationship with us continually. We should seek to daily walk and talk with God, letting Him guide and direct us into His perfect will for our lives. He also desires to be our source for everything we need. We seek to learn to trust and obey Him more each day.

CODE OF ETHICS:

I am committed to minister in a way that will not bring shame or reproach to the Name of the Lord. This includes relationships among associates, friends, neighbors and others. (1 Peter 1:13-16)

I stand on the premise that believers are to live self-controlled, upright and Godly lives in keeping with the Scriptures. (Titus 2:11-14)

I recognize and respect other individuals and organizations and will refrain from criticism of others.

I will follow the standards of Matthew 18:10-14. (1 Peter 3:8-9)

Fee Schedule

Dear Friend,

I have a heart’s desire to assist you with the help of the Lord, the word of God, my professional training and life experience. To keep this ministry continuing for you and for others I call your attention to the financial matter.

The normal cost for private individual pastoral counseling at this level is $80.00 per session. If you have an adequate income, I would appreciate your contribution in that amount. For those who have a lower income, the following sliding scale guide will assist you in determining a reasonable donation to this ministry.

For each counseling session that you will receive, use the following guidelines. If your household income is:

$526 to $600 per week - $65.00 per session

$451 to $525 per week - $50.00 “ “

$376 to $450 per week - $40.00 “ “

$301 to $375 per week - $25.00 “ “

$226 to $300 per week - $15.00 “ “

$151 to $225 per week - $10.00 “ “

Your support of this ministry will provide for those individuals who are not able to pay for counseling sessions. For those individuals who are not able to contribute, please do not let the fee schedule keep you from obtaining the healing God has intended for you. If you can contribute a portion, please allow the Lord to guide you in your giving. No questions are asked. The Lord provides for His children.

DEFINITIONS

Occult comes from the Latin word occultus (clandestine, hidden, secret), referring to "knowledge of the hidden,” meant only for certain people or knowledge that must be kept hidden.

Cult - refers to a group whose beliefs or practices are unreasonable, considered strange. The term originally denoted a system or ritual practices.

Apparition is an act or instance of appearing as a visible spirit.

Aura readings look at your spiritual energy system: the layers of your aura, your energy channels, chakras, etc. The reader sees different colors and identifies which colors represent your own energy and which colors are unwanted energies.

Clairvoyance is the ability to gain information about an object, person, location or physical event through means other than the known human senses.

Clairaudience is receiving messages in thought form from another frequency or realm. It is considered a form of channeling.

A Course in Miracles is a self-study curriculum (spiritual in nature) that sets forth an absolute non-dualistic metaphysics yet integrates (its definition

of the principle of) forgiveness emphasizing its practical application in daily living.

Déjà Vu is the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously (an who individual feels as though an event has already happened or has happened in the recent past), although the exact circumstances of the previous encounter are uncertain.

Divination is the attempt to gain insight into a question or situation by way of a ritual.

Kabala is a discipline and school of thought concerned with the mystical aspect of Judaism. It is a set of esoteric teachings meant to explain the relationship between an eternal/mysterious Creator and the mortal/finite universe.

Necromancy is a form of magic in which the practitioner seeks to summon the spirit of a deceased person, either as an apparition or ghost, or to raise them bodily, for the purpose of divination.

Rosicrucianism is the theology of a secret society of mystics, allegedly formed in late medieval Germany, holding a doctrine "built on esoteric truths of the ancient past", which concealed from the average man, provided insight into nature, the physical universe and the spiritual realm.

Geomancy is a method of divination that interprets markings on the ground or the patterns formed by tossed handfuls of soil, rocks and sand.
