Who's Been Sleeping In My House?: Peter Pan

Monday, 9 January 2012

About 500 kms east of Perth, on the fringe of the Western Desert, sits the outback town of Coolgardie. In the 1890s it exploded into life with the discovery of gold, and became a ghost town almost overnight when the gold dried up. Today only a few of the grand buildings from Coolgardie's heyday survive, and one of them is Peter Pan.

Tex and Margaret Moore have a remarkable history with Peter Pan that makes their bond with it particularly strong. They first laid eyes on it in the 1970s when the house was in ruins, but it was love at first sight. They began rebuilding it, a monumental task that took eight years. But what makes Tex and Margaret's renovation story so different is they didn't even own the house. It was in the hands of the Public Trustee, and for years they slaved away at restoring Peter Pan in the hope that one day they could buy it. Eventually they did.

Coolgardie's a tough old mining town. A fairytale name is the last thing you'd expect out here. So who named it Peter Pan, and why? Also, despite the house being in ruins, the couple has always wondered about the only furniture to survive the years of ransacking - a set of dining chairs with sinister, demonic heads carved onto their backs. And finally, there's a local legend that a barman once hid in Peter Pan's cellar whilst trying to escape an angry lynch mob from nearby Kalgoorlie. Could it be true?

The History Of Safari With Richard E. Grant

Monday, 9 January 2012 FinalIn the final episode of The History of Safari with Richard E. Grant, Richard learns about some of the legendary hunting characters who were central to the safari scene in the 20th century.

These often larger-than-life characters inspired novels and films, encouraging figures like Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill and the British Royal family, to travel to East Africa to bag the 'big five' - lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard.

But as the wildlife population plummeted across Africa, the emphasis began to shift from hunting to conservation.

Richard visits an eco-lodge and embarks on a luxury safari led by one of the new generation of British settlers in the Maasai Mara.

Nigella Kitchen: Don't Knock It Till You’ve Tried It

Tuesday, 10 January 2012

Nigella's shaking things up in the kitchen, proving you shouldn't knock it till you've tried it. No time to bake? No problem. Irish oaten rolls are fast and easy and give instant comfort and gratification. Salty and sweet may not sound like a match made in heaven, but Nigella's sweet and salty crunch nut bars are totally irresistible. Take a leap of faith with her inky black squid risotto, as dramatically spectacular with its black rice and sautéed squid topping, as it is simple to make. Then breathing new life into old traditions - there's a really unusual slow cooked melt-in-the-mouth Asian braised shin of beef topped with a crisp hot and sour shredded salad. She's on a kitchen adventure and passionate about trying anything once. Why wouldn't you? The dishes are delicious.

Nature's Miracle Babies: Islands (Tasmanian Devils, Mauritius Kestrel, Mountain Chickens, Aye Aye, Koala)

Tuesday, 10 January 2012

In this inspiring series zoologist Martin Hughes-Games visits projects all over the world - from outback Australia to the savannahs of East Africa, from local zoo breeding programs to relocation in the Amazonian region of Brazil - following the dedicated individuals working to save some of the world's most critically vulnerable species.

This week's episode focuses on the world's islands, home to some of the most threatened animals simply because they exist nowhere else.

Martin travels to Australia and follows the plight of one especially threatened species - the Tasmanian devil, an animal that could be extinct in a generation because of a deadly facial cancer spreading through the wild population. He meets the keepers, field workers and carers who are desperately trying to give this species a future.

Martin also examines the scientific helping-hand that might save koalas.

And he reports on the success story of the Mauritius kestrel - once the rarest bird in the world, its numbers have spectacularly increased through captive breeding.

Outnumbered

Wednesday, 11 January 2012

Outnumbered follows the daily chaos of family life with two parents and three young children locked in an unequal contest (hence the title). Containing elements of improvisation, this comedy is an honest portrayal of the well meaning parental incompetence that happens in most homes, as Mum (Claire Skinner) and Dad (Hugh Dennis) attempt to raise their kids with the minimum of emotional damage for all concerned.

Experience the daily rollercoaster of family life as Mum and Dad try to keep up with the inquisitive and imaginative minds of their three hilarious offspring Jake (Tyger Drew-Honey), Ben (Daniel Roche) and Karen (Ramona Marquez).

In series four, the family is confronted by an array of issues ranging from death, drugs, terrorism and getting old to food science, Top Gear and the joy of ventriloquism.

In this episode, Mum has had enough of the boys’ attitudes to housework so sets out on a campaign to civilise them. Karen battles with chuggers and buying shoes, while Dad goes to war with a domestic appliance.

The Trip: The Yorke Arms

Wednesday, 11 January 2012

Steve and Rob stop at The Yorke Arms in Yorkshire's Niddervale Valley. They continue their hilarious patter while driving, with Steve disdainful of satnavs, claiming it is the journey not the destination that is the joy. Steve scales the valley's beautiful limestone cliffs while Rob stays below, claiming a dicky heart. But Steve's climb proves frustrating. Just as he is admiring the spectacular vista at the top, a garrulous geography expert gives him a lecture while scarcely drawing breath.

The pair discuss why older women are more interesting, Steve's song-writing plans and why imperfect people usually make the best talent.

Steve also takes pains to separate himself from Rob when he suspects Rob presumes they are, and will continue to be, a double act.

Jimmy's Food Factory: Roast Dinner

Thursday, 12 January 2012

Enterprising farmer Jimmy Doherty turns his supermarket food curiosity to the Sunday roast.

Using his assorted household and farmyard apparatus, he tries to make it from scratch, attempting to create the potato flakes that turn into instant mash. Like the factory he uses a drum dryer to dehydrate the potatoes.

He then tries to take the caffeine out of coffee using a fish tank.

Jimmy also discovers how a high-tech hospital kit is helping a sheep farmer choose his best rams for breeding and then heads for a factory that makes 30 million Yorkshire puddings every week - and every one of them rises perfectly.

My Family: Susan For A Bruisin'

Friday, 13 January 2012

Susan (Zoe Wanamaker) wants to look her best for an impending school reunion. Ben (Robert Lindsay) is learning how to administer Cavitox and suggests Susan could try it. Susan dismisses the idea; she is fabulous as she is! Ben also tries to help Kenzo (Tayler Marshall) by suggesting he let a little girl in his class know he likes her by giving her a present - but who would know that Kenzo has such a big heart!

An old school friend, Mary, arrives to ask Susan to give the keynote speech at their forthcoming school reunion but lets it slip that Susan was not their first choice. Susan is further undermined when a younger replacement is hired at the Art Gallery where she works and, furious at what she sees as blatant ageism, quits.

In the end, Ben is driven to asking the vicar to talk to Susan and he duly tells her to focus on something that will bring a smile to her face… but did he really mean her to undergo a session of Cavitoxing from her newly-qualified husband?

Duly lifted from her depression, Susan's speech is well-applauded at her school reunion - finally she is amongst friends… all of whom have had similar youth-prolonging treatment!

Hogfather

Saturday, 14 January 2012 FinalBased on the best-selling books by satirist Terry Pratchett, Hogfather is a two-part miniseries unlike anything ever imagined - hilarious and horrifying, magical and menacing, wicked and witty - all set in a parallel universe called Discworld, where reality is stretched to its limit.

It's the night before Hogswatch (a bit like Christmas) and the Hogfather (the jolly fat man) is due to deliver presents to the kiddies at the midwinter festival of Hogswatch.

The Hogfather is being watched by the Auditors - grey-robed spectres who audit the entire universe and maintain a neat order of things. Their new plan is to destroy all human belief so they can control Discworld.

The ruthless, Mr. Teatime (Marc Warren) is enlisted to kill the Hogfather. A dire situation because if the Hogfather disappears all will be lost and the sun will never rise again.

To keep the little boys and girls of Discworld happy, Death (voiced by Ian Richardson), is summoned to fill Hogfather's shoes but when his granddaughter Susan - a mild-mannered, half human - finds out what he's doing, she goes to find what's happened to the Hogfather.

Part Two - Saturday, January 14 at 7:30pm

Death's granddaughter, Susan (Michelle Dockery) continues her search to find out what happened to the Hogfather and stumbles upon trouble at the Tooth Fairy's castle.

Meanwhile the evil Mr Teatime gets closer to destroying all human belief.

Hogfather has a stellar cast including: Tony Robinson (The Worst Jobs In History), Sir David Jason (A Touch Of Frost), Peter Guinness (Bleak House), Neil Pearson (Bridget Jones's Diary), Marc Warren (Hustle), Joss Ackland (Midsomer Murders) and David Warner (Planet Of The Apes, Titanic).

Single-Handed: The Stolen Child

Saturday, 14 January 2012

Police Sergeant Jack Driscoll (Owen McDonnell) has recently been posted to the remote coast of West Ireland - the area where he was born and raised. His very first case takes him into the dark heart of the local community, and reveals shocking secrets that threaten to engulf everyone, including his own father Gerry (Ian McElhinney). Jack must summon all his courage to bring the law to a place which has lived by a different set of rules.

Now Jack is investigating a child going missing and the mother blames his absent father when she sees his car driving away. She tells Jack that he had previously threatened to take the boy.

But the search is proving unsuccessful and Jack fears for the child's safety when he discovers that the father is a drug addict. Fears grow even stronger when they find the father in a drug-induced state in an old shack and unable to remember anything.

Meanwhile Jack's father Gerry is appearing before a tribunal investigating his previous behaviour as police sergeant in the village, and with the confidence built up from years of no-one questioning his methods, is making light of proceedings.

Bran Nue Dae

It's the summer of 1969 in Broome, an idyllic pearling port on Australia's west coast, and shy Aboriginal teenager Willie (Rocky McKenzie) reluctantly finds himself on his way back to Catholic boarding school in Perth before he gets to date the girl of his dreams, local church singer, the beautiful Rosie (Jessica Mauboy). Willie's devoted mother, single parent Theresa (Ningali Lawford-Wolf) hopes that one day he'll become a priest.

But it's not long before life at boarding school under the strict and sometimes cruel rule of Father Benedictus (Geoffrey Rush) becomes unbearable, and Willie makes his bolt for freedom. Alone in the city, he is befriended by the roguish 'Uncle Tadpole' (Ernie Dingo) who, it turns out, is also from Broome, and promises to help Willie get back home. But not before he's been to the pub of course. Eventually they hitch a lift in a Kombi van with a couple of hippies - loved-up Annie (Missy Higgins) and uptight German tourist Slippery (Tom Budge). They head off on the 2,500 km journey with Tadpole spinning clichéd Aboriginal tales to an enraptured Annie, and Slippery wondering how far away Broome actually is. Willie has an uneasy feeling it's going to be a bumpy ride...not to mention what his Mum is going to do to him when he gets home

Meanwhile, Father Benedictus has hit the road determined to find Willie and make him fulfil his destiny; and in Broome, Rosie has started singing with the pub band whose lead singer, handsome bad boy Lester (Dan Sultan), has his eye on her.

Tadpole robs a petrol station run by man-eater 'Roadhouse Betty' (Magda Szubanski) causing them to make a running getaway, and Slippery turfs the hitchers out. Willie hitches a ride with a truck full of Zorba-dancing football-playing boys and finds himself offloaded in the rough mining town of Port Hedland where he catches the attentions of local good-time girl, Roxanne (Deborah Mailman).

Willie is rescued in the nick of time by his Kombi companions but the Kombi is pulled over by the cops, and they spend the night in jail. Willie has a disturbing dream and worries that he can't go back home, but Tadpole decides to take responsibility and promises Willie that he will get him home.

Willie arrives in Broome with no idea if Rosie will still be there or what his mother will do, but little does he know that the day ahead will be full of surprises - for everyone.
