What ?

• A non-profit organisation set up in 2003 offering holidays both to children with a serious illness and to their families in financially straightened circumstances.


What?• A 100 % private initiative• Set up by 3 people willing to share the same dream:• to brighten the lives of the poorest and seriously ill children• to become involved personally.

About us • A house in grounds (1,15hectares) in the village of

Champion (5km from Namur)• Renovation work completed in 2004• The property is owned by the association • 34 beds and 11 rooms • 6 bathrooms / showers and 6 separate lavatories• 1 kitchen (to professional standards)• 1 large dining room• 2 playrooms• A sports ground (opened in 2007)• Outdoors games and bikes Capacity: can accommodate more than 20 children with

their mothers and siblings


Objectives

• To offer these children and their families a place of rest and relaxation for a long weekend or a week during school holidays.

• To offer an environment and opportunity to escape from their everyday, often unbearable, existence.

• To provide a setting to relax and enjoy.


What do we do?

A recreational project is set up for the children so that:

• stays are organised as holidays; moments of pleasure to forget the daily stress of illness;

• during the stay mothers enjoy a respite from caring for their children and are free to take advantage of the environment, play sport or participate in numerous activities/workshops (sewing, painting on ceramic, or cookery).


What do we do?

• Children have the chance to forget their illness thanks to the recreational and sporting activities organised for them or the whole family. • Indoor: crafts, drawings, glass painting, games, acting,

singing, tennis, and parties animated by a clown, musician, magician, or storyteller.

• Outdoor (in the grounds): playground (playhouses, swings, slides), team sports (badminton, volleyball, tennis, soccer, handball), bikes and go-karts.

• Outside the grounds: excursions, walks with nature guide, boat journeys on the Meuse, riding, swimming, fishing, visits to craftsmen, safari Park (Han), picnics.


Our activities


How does the association work?• The ASBL is a wholly independent legal entity.• It is in contact with many social & medical centres and NGOs:• doctors, specialists, psychologists, social workers, hospitals;• the Federation against Cancer, Association contre la

Mucoviscidose (Cystic Fibrosis);• assistance & protection services for youth, domestic

violence, maternity homes;• other social groups such as Katholieke Vereniging

Gehandicapten, SAEM, and Sunchild;• they identify the children who would benefit from a stay at

La Maison des Gais Lurons and provide the ABSL with contact details of the families; no direct request is made by the latter.


Our human resources

• We are all volunteers• The activity leaders are responsible adults who prepare their

team and each holiday, thoroughly.• All transport to and from the home of families is included in the

stay as well as the excursions organised by the volunteers.

• Letting the house when unoccupied

• Own fund raising through activities and sponsorship• Theatre - concert• Annual Football tournament• Charity auction

• The association does not receive any public funds; it is not subsidised.

Families pay nothing. Everything is offered

Our financial needs • In addition to recurrent operating costs and organisation

of the stays, the Association needs to invest in:
