1-4 Tools and Procedures
The Metric System Used by most scientists when
collecting data and performing experiments.
Decimal system using multiples of 10
Common Metric Units• length– the meter– roughly equals 39.4 inches
• volume: the amount of space an object occupies– cubic centimeter for solids– liter for liquids
More Common Metric Units• mass: measure of the amount of matter in and
object • weight: measure of the pull of gravity on that mass– the kilogram– approximately 2.2 pounds
• temperature– uses the Celsius scale– water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C
The Metric System
• the universal system of measurement
• Called SI or System International
ANALYZING DATA As scientists, you will often be asked
to record data, analyze it, and interpret your results.
Being able to plot data, graph it, and make comparisons is an important skill.
Microscopes Compound light microscope: Uses
light to study dead organisms and some very small living ones.
Electron microscope: Uses beams of electrons to study samples.
Done inside a vacuum so living things cannot be studied.
