Visual Communication/Design Categories: Branded Art, Public Art, Signage, Wayfi nding, Design, City of Manchester Connecticut - Budget: $30,000 (Mural 1)

Black Ink Creative Partners was contracted with the City of Manchester Connecticut to create an on-brand mural to support their new city branding initiative ‘oneManchester’. These murals must meet an the ideas of inclusion, growth, diversity and forward thinking in an artistic and visually pleasing style that incorporates the ‘oneManchester’ slogan.

The fi rst mural was executed on a city owned site, 901 Main Street, known as the ‘Work Space’ building. This site was chosen due to it’s mission in supporting small business development and growth and it’s position having exposure both to Main Street and the back parking lot known as the Purnell Place Lot. The lot is a public parking area lined by a the rear of several Main Street facing buildings and is home to several events held by the city throughout the year.

The original mural was to fi t within a space of 15 feet above the grade on the rear, at a size of 15 feet high by 35 feet wide, which then wrapped around the building along the walk way (pedestrian connection between the lot and Main Street) at a height of 10 feet above grade spanning a 15 foot high by 43 foot long space. The city asked us if we could fi nd a way to extend our design the balance of 100 feet ending on the Main Street walkway entrance based on their contingency budget of $5,000. We were able to extend the mural out the additional 100 feet at no additional cost to the project. Additionally there was an unforessen issue with the asphalt being to soft to support the 2500 pound scissor lift. This resulted in us either having to bring in an articulated boom or redesign the rear of the

building. We requested a meeting with the city PM and redesigned the concept, which allowed us to provide an instagrammable. This also resulted in an increase in the square foot coverage, again we were able to remain in budget with the change.

Despite the various changes in design and extended work, we completed the primary art work one week ahead of schedule. We returned 2 weeks after letting the paint cure to apply the anti-graffi ti coating. The complete project timeline including design started in July 2019 and ended in August 2019.

John Albino - Entrepreneur (Marshalll budget $12,000, Branding budget $15,000)

Mr. Albino operates four (4) separate business entities; Absolute Music Studio and School, Absolutely Tuned To Rock – a 501 3(c) charitable organization, Bulletproof Recording Studios, John’s Crossing, Christian Rock band.

We have provided brand design, promotional design and photography services for over the last fi ve years; Bulletproof Recording Studios and John’s Crossing, as well as gratis and charity services for the music school and not-for-profi t. These services have been separate projects of varying size and scope & every project has been met with success.

Projects have included; Leave behinds, hand-outs, window cards, digital content and lobby cards with project assets often developed from scratch. Many of these fi nal products were deployed by Mr. Albino’s staff & his social media marketing company, Wiz Media of NJ In addition to the projects we were contracted, several larger promotional and branding projects were undertaken in partnership with several large product manufacturers in the music industry.

The companies we provided promotional assets to were:

Visual Communication/Design Categories: Branded Advertising, Marketing Collateral, Cam-paign Marketing, Photography, Graphic Design

Marshall Amplifi cation, an American manufacturer of stage and studio audio amplifi ers since the mid-1960s;

Godin Guitars, a Canadian manufacturer of guitars and bass guitars;

Cool Picks, an American manufacturer of both standard and custom guitar picks. These three projects required complete management of the various components to meet the product goals.

We believe these projects best exemplify our approach to a project when provided with minimal detail and direction from the corporations for whom we were creating production assets. All three companies were unable to provide style and use guides. We were required to deconstruct many of their current promotions and then had to formulate the style in which the marketing collateral was to be designed to fi t with their brand.

The project was started with an ideation meeting, focused on the Marshall Amplifi cation promotions. After this meeting, sketch concepts were developed along with a brief story treatment for each idea. Upon fi nalizing the concepts, we coordinated the materials list, team list, schedule, equipment list and subsequently further fi ne-tuned the concepts.

Mr. Albino coordinated the makeup artist and his band members for the shoot. The balance of scheduling was coordinated by our Company. The shoot team consisted of:Eric Vincent Allen as both project coordinator and production design director, as well as 2nd camera; Shawn B. Mack as Lead Photographer; Jack Linkin as B-Roll and behind the scenes photographer; Juliana Rodre as live social media designer; Mark Slotnick as business operations and oversight for all the projects.

The set up and shoot schedule was done over the course of two days: fi rst day to set up of the scene and the second day 2 was the shoot.

Upon completion of the shoot, the photographs were reviewed and only those that were highly usable, best shot and presented the client in the best possible way were selected.

The next stage of the process was to design concepts. The client determined they wanted a poster, a double page spread, a tear sheet and a lobby card, as well as digital content. The designs were sketched, and the client chose the concepts they liked best. We proceeded to move into design production. The design team was comprised of Eric Vincent Allen, production coordinator/designer; Basem Hassan, Creative Director; Erich Drazen, Jack Linkin, and Connor Wean, Designers.

The fi nal designs were sent to the client and through the standard process of review and revisions, we developed the fi nal product which were forwarded to Marshall Amplifi cations’ endorsement and band promotions department for use and publication.

Contract Ready Federal Conference and Exposition - Rebrand (Budget - $12,000 to date)

Mr. Elliot is a business to government conference producer & promoter who maintains several B2G events throughout the eastern region of the united states including but not limited to; Fort Stewart, GA, Fort Benning, VA, Fort Campbell, KY, and in the upcoming year, Redstone Arsenal, AL.

Mr. Elliot operated as TT Expo for more than 10 years, and felt it was time to expand the project mission and rebrand the company to fi t a greater narrative. We were contracted to create the visual identity of Contract Ready, create new marketing collateral: program guides, mailers, email newsletter, and to develop a clean, compact website that met the ideas and notions of government and military: Strong, clean, streamlined, & polished.

The development of a visual identity is only one aspect of branding. The brand encompasses experience, feeling, service and recognition. Although Mr. Elliot asked us for the specifi cs of an identity & website, we felt he needed New Brand Identity

Former

Visual Communication/Design Categories: Branding/Rebranding, Brand Design, Graphic Design

to expand on his offerings, add to his client experience & we helped to strategize for the business’ growth.

Mr. Elliot began implementing changes to his existing conference plans Black Ink suggested; increase his prime contractor lecture series, reorganized the show schedule, & move web hosting to a more user friendly interface. These were successful strategies, and Mr. Elliot implemented them alongside the new visual identity Black Ink developed.

The new visual identity was discussed with Mr. Elliot, with focus on what he envisioned Contract Ready was going to truly represent. We asked Mr. Elliot to explain how he visualized the direction of his company in the next 3 three to 5 fi ve years, what the company stood for, what he wanted to achieve and what he believed the company’s mission was. We began to work with the ideas of shape and form, choosing a typeface that we felt represented a similar line and arch to the classic architecture of Washington, D.C. We chose to use negative space to represent the Capital Dome and stack the typeface to represent a solid foundation. The fi nal design was approved and released.

William Shatner’s Man-O-War (now known as War Chronicles) was based on his passion project of the same name which was written before his highly successful Tek War series. The story had a previous comic iteration that was abrubtly cancelled and after several years in limbo, LNL Partners along with Panel Fly and several other companies resurrected the title and started new. The series was published and could be found both in print and digitally on Amazon’s Comixology.

Work done for this project ranged from typographic layout to

digital color, both analog and digital ink, animation prep, as well as promotional material.

Our team of 8 artists, typographers and designers worked on more than 386 pages in a 14 week period. Besides credit pages (shown here), there were title page design and recap page designs, illustration edits and color work. Of the 16, 24 page volumes created only 5 major revisions as per Mr. Shatner’s and the Editor’s request.

Tom Porowski - Big Tom & The Guns (budget $3,500)

NJ based cover band, Big Tom and the Guns needed various concert posters for their new debut single release party.

Their desire was to catch their style and aesthetic utilizing their skull logo. Their style was an amalgamation of 80s hair band with 80s punk rock and pop. Their sound was also fused into the cover remakes of popular songs they did. This, among several other designs, piqued their interest. This design took a classic minimalist, punk/anarchist approach and broke the rules of typography, effectively meeting with their approval.

The project was commissioned by Dean Carl Calendar (ret.) in 2016, who’s goal was to engage and beautify both the Center for Visual Arts and the literary building, Larison Hall to create an appealing visual and choesive element for the college, staff and learners.

Brookdale Community College, Lincroft New Jersey - Wayfi nding Beta Project (Budget $6000)

Prior to his retirement he contracted with Black Ink to create a wayfi nding project that would be engaging and entertaining to the visitors, student and faculty. The images shown were done as the test and presentation piece using anamporphic typography for his proposal to the board of directors.

The work extended 16 feet down the corridor with 3 foot lettering designed to conform to the shape of the environment & become legible & readable when standing in a designtated spot. The plan was to create these throughout the buildings to defi ne each classroom. Unfortunately the board was unable to approve the funding prior to Dean Calendar’s retirement and the plans were dropped in favor of a classic map approach, which we developed.

Nicolas Creative - Cary Plastics (Budget - $142 per hour)

Tasked with creating new marketing materials for Cary Compounds and the possibility of a re-brand, we were brought in to consult on the project and determined it was best to update the design since the company was a family owned and operated company for more than 40 years. We felt it made sense to create an analog logo out of the compounds used to create the PVC products to further represent the company. The results are below:
