This is the fourth year of Celebrating Seniors—our “Senior” year, so to speak.
And what a wonderful celebration we have planned, starting on May 8th with the recognition of our latest “60 Over 60” class at The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association.
As with our first three classes, the 2014 “60 Over 60” collection is truly amazing. Educators, physicians, philosophers, business leaders, philanthropists and volunteers extraordinaire just begin to describe the depth and breadth of this esteemed group. Be sure to get acquainted with the class that you will encounter in this guide and at www.celebratingseniors.net.
While you are on the organization’s website, we invite you to fill out the nomination form for at least one individual whom you believe would be a great candidate for the 2015 “60 Over 60” class.
On a more immediate note, we are pleased to have scheduled nearly 50 events during Celebrating Seniors Week, May
15-22, 2014, culminating with a keynote speech from Harry Porterfield during our May 22nd Closing Luncheon at Concordia University. Be sure to mark your calendar for that one!
At 85 years young, Mr. Porterfield is a longtime television broadcaster who anchors the 11 a.m. newscast of CBS 2 in Chicago. He embodies the vibrant spirit that is at the heart of our organization and is truly “Someone You Should Know,” the title of more than 2,000 feature profiles that he has created over the past half-century.
These events are fun, informative, educational and/or just plain entertaining. Every event listed in the guide this year is free and open to the public. In some cases, please note that reservations are required.
You can also access regularly updated information at www.celebratingseniors.net. There you will also find information about our mission, what we do, how to apply for funds, the “60 over 60” class, how you can get involved and much more.
I would like to thank the Community of Congregations and its president, Sally Iberg, for their guidance, counsel and unwavering support. Since our inception, the Community of Congregations has stood shoulder to shoulder with the Celebrating Seniors Coalition in our mission to:
1. Assist seniors with emergency needs.
2. Facilitate cooperation between the business community, government agencies and non-profits for the benefit of the senior population.
3. Promote senior groups and organizations that serve persons 60 and older.
4. Raise public awareness of issues affecting seniors.
In our four years, Celebrating Seniors has raised over $25,000 to help seniors in need. With our works of charity, we are touching the lives of ordinary citizens. We have paid utility bills so people have heat and running water, we have purchased mattresses and provided moving services to those in need. We have funded
refrigerators, washers, hot water heaters, furnaces and air conditioners. We have changed locks in rapid response to keep people safe.
We could not have accomplished this without the support of the Community of Congregations.
It is rewarding and humbling to see the outpouring of support for the older adults in our community. Those we recognize and serve by celebrating seniors are typically not in the headlines; instead, they are the unsung heroes who, day by day, change individual lives and make a positive difference in the life of our community.
It is an honor and a blessing to share this celebration of older adults with you. Thank you for taking the time to Celebrate Seniors!
All the best,
Jim FlanaganChairman, Celebrating Seniors CoalitionChairman, Oak Park and River Forest Township Senior Services Committee
Celebrating Seniors 2014: Welcome to Our ‘Senior’ Year
What a joy it is to join with our communities in Celebrating Seniors! Hats
off to all those who work tirelessly to ensure that we lift up the wis-dom of our seniors. Celebrating Seniors Week is an extravaganza of wonderful events and opportu-nities.
The Oak Park River Forest Community of Congregations is proud to work with the Celebrat-ing Seniors Coalition and support its important work. Not only does the coalition celebrate seniors, it provides needed support to many seniors throughout the year. For all of this, we are grateful.
Community of Congregations supports the expansion of this wonderful program to communi-ties in the area as well as through-
out the state. It is an exciting initiative that has meaning and purpose everywhere.
We hope that you will participate in many of the scheduled activi-ties throughout Celebrating Se-niors Week, May 15 to May 22. We also hope you will continue to lift up seniors as an invaluable asset.
Community of Congregations is proud of our relationship with Celebrating Seniors as well as other initiatives it supports. In conjunction with the Oak Park River Forest Historical Society, we sponsor Sacred Spaces House of Worship Walk which provides the opportunity to experience the relationship between architecture and faith. We also sponsor the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, which this year will be
held on November 23 at 7:00 pm. The Holiday Food and Gift Basket Program provides gifts, food, and financial support to those in need in our communities during the winter holidays.
The Community of Congrega-tions has a rich history of inter-faith service, helping to launch West Suburban PADS, The Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry, Cluster Tutoring, and Prevail (formerly known as The Walk-In Ministry). Since the fall of 2013 we have been hosting community meetings that offer all of us the opportunity to get to know our neighbors, discover the programs that are enjoying success through-out the city and suburbs, and find ways in which congregations and individuals can engage and orga-
nizations can collaborate.
If you would like more informa-tion about Community of Con-gregations, please contact Katie Avalos, Administrative Secretary at [email protected] or at P. O. Box 3365, Oak Park, IL 60303-3365.
Join us as we Celebrate Seniors and build relationships with the wider community.

Enough is EnoughReporting suspected abuse of older adults and persons with disabilities in Illinois

Thousands of older adults and adults with disabilities are abused, neglected and exploited every year in Illinois.
Adult Protective Services, administered through the Illinois Department on Aging, is here to help. Adult Protective Services is responsible for investigating suspected cases of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional), neglect (passive, willful, confinement) or financial exploitation of adults 60 years of age or older, and adults 18-59 with a disability who reside in a domestic setting. Illinois currently has limited mandated reporting requirements in
regards to reporting suspected abuse.
The law requires certain persons providing services to older adults or persons with disabilities including health professionals, law enforcement, social workers, educators, and others, must report suspicion of abuse if the individual, because of dysfunction, cannot report for themselves. Individuals are encouraged to report voluntarily and the law provides immunity from liability for anyone making report in good faith.

After working for a large podiatric group practice on the far South Side of Chicago for the last eight
years, I have always longed to work in my own community of Oak Park (ten years and counting). After the birth of my daughter last year, I realized I had the perfect opportunity to decrease my commute; so I opened my podiatry practice at North and Woodbine in June of 2009.
I came to podiatry as a result of competitive figure skating. Skaters typically wear a size, sometimes two, smaller than their conventional shoes. As you can imagine, that means the skater’s foot, specifically the toes, suffer. I trained as a competitive figure skater for nineteen years, and the result has been several surgical procedures, most recently three years ago while working as a Podiatrist.
A fellow Podiatrist performed the procedure on a Friday and the following Monday I was back at work, wearing a surgical boot and treating patients who were more than a little amused that the doctor was also a patient. But their amusement aside, the additional benefit to my patients is that I know what it is like to have serious foot problems, and more importantly, how to effectively and compassionately help my patients heal comfortably with or without surgery and recover with minimal disruption to their everyday lives.
My dream of opening a business in my community is now a reality, and I could not be more excited and eager to showcase my skills and services to the people in my community. The feet are truly the foundation to the entire body, and happy feet lead to happy people!
Do you wake up with Heel Pain? I can help!

I can help!
This may be a condition called Plantar
Fasciitis, and there are a variety of non-
surgical treatments for it.

HoSPICE CAREDefinitionConsidered to be the model for quality, compassion-ate care at the end of life, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach of expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient’s wishes. Emotional and spiritual support also is extended to the family and loved ones. Generally, this care is provided in the patient’s home or in a home-like setting operated by a hospice program. Medicare, private health insurance, and Medicaid in most states cover hospice care for patients who meet certain criteria.

ASSISTED LIVINGDefinitionAssisted Living communi-ties are for persons who need help with daily living activities but do not require nursing home care. Typi-cally they provide help with meals, bathing, dressing, housekeeping and other needs. Services are either included in the rent or provided at an extra charge. The Indiana Department of Health regulates and licenses assisted living facili-ties as “Residential Care” providers; however, many assisted living facilites are not licensed.
