What is the Lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is the drainage system in the body. It is also the immune system. The organs are as follows; The bone marrow, spleen, thymus gland, lymph nodes, tonsils, and the appendix.

When is it used?

It’s used when the immune system is used. It also is used when dead cells, or microorganisms, need to be discarded of.

Where is it located?

It is located all through out the body. Mainly at the chest area.

Why is it there?

It is there to help protect the body. Also, it disposes of dead cells.

How is it used?

It is used when the body needs to get rid of dead cells and/or diseased cells. The lymph nodes are the ones that filter out the dead cells. The lymph system contains a network of vessels that assist in circulating body fluids. These vessels transport excess fluids away from interstitial spaces in body tissue and returns it to the bloodstream.

Ten interesting facts

The lymphatic system is closely related to the cardiovascular system.

There are three main ways that they work together to maintain homeostasis: the lymphatic system receives the excess tissue fluid and returns it to the bloodstream, lacteals take fat molecules from the intestinal villi and transport them to the bloodstream and both systems work together to defend the body against disease.

The lymphatic system returns about 3.17 quarts (3 liters) offluid each day from the tissues to the circulatory system.

The lymphatic system is made up of lymph vessels that carry lymph, a protein-rich fluid that is transported through the lymph vessels, and lymph nodes which filter out germs and toxins.

There are over 100 lymph nodes throughout the body, with the majority of them being located in the neck, groin and armpits.

Within the lymphatic vessels, lymph is transported through the vessels and moves via the squeezing action of their neighboring skeletal muscles.

Ten Interesting facts cont.

Larger lymph vessels are similar to veins Contraction of the skeletal muscle causes movement of the

lymph fluid through valves The spleen is very similar to the lymph nodes except it is larger

and filled with blood There are 2 diff. responses with the immune system. One is non-

specific responses and the other is specific responses
