The word order in the Greek creates a bit of a different nuance of meaning than the NIV text does.

The Greek has Clothe yourselves, therefore, as Gods chosen people, holy and dearly loved . . .

He kicked my dog. versus My dog he kicked.

The Greek emphasizes the action while the English text emphasizes the identity.

These characteristics are not automatic, but rather must be actively put on by us.

This is a middle voice, in which the actor both does and receives the action. It is not that God clothes us while we sit passively by, but rather that we put on what God has already provided for us as we seek to walk with Christ.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

It is also good to note that the verb is plural and that the list of characteristics are all interactive. You cannot be compassionate without touching others.

Living a life that honors Christ cannot be done as a monk.
