The Academic Cbmmon Market was launched in tilt spring of 1974following considerable time and hard work on the part of institu-bona!, state, and legislative leaders who recognized in the Marketan coportunity to improve the quality of higher education whileconserving the limited resources of the region through cooperativeefforts,

The Market operates as a mechanism through which states andinstitutions voluntarily participate in a joint allocation of function toavoid unnecessary duplication of programs and w assure availabilityand access to as many programs as are necessary in meeting theeducational needs of the region's constituencies: Market arrange-ments for the academic year beginning in the fall of 1975 providefor the sharing Of 140 graduate programs. Consequently,, manystudents will find excellent educationV opportunities not offeredin their own state available to them elsewhere without payment ofoutof-state fees
