Southern California ••••schools which compete with others of equal butsmaller enrolL~ent., All-Southern California Board of Football selections have beenmade since 1937, but only since 1951 has the Board undertaken to pick players fromamong the smaller C.l.F. high schools.

Player of the Year honors in the North-South section of the C.l.F.,wentto San Marino High School's outstanding quarterback Bill Redell. A first-team ClFselection last year as a junior, Bill led his Rio Hondo League champions to thefinals of the AA schools playoff, l,oJ'here they lost to Claremont, 20-0. Throughoutthe year Bill was tops on both offense and defense for Coach Vic Schwenkts Titans.Bill scored 71 points for the year, threw for eight touchdowns and kicked two fieldgoals. He was voted the "most valuable playertr in the Rio I-iondo League, the firsttime this honor has been voted by the league f s coaches. Coach Schwenk says of Bill;,"Redell has everything desired in an athlete -- ability, desire, great team playerand above all is very humble., I never expect to have another like him.!'

For having been named Southern California C.I.F. Small Schools Player ofthe Year for 1958, Bill Redell will receive a special Helms medal award at the 22ndannual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at HelmsHall on Saturday morning, January lOth at 10:30 a.m. At this time all those play­ers named for AIl-ClF and All-Los Angeles City football team honors vall be present­ed with their'framed scroll awards. Coaches" athletes' and past stars of the gridironwill join in paying tribute to these great high school grid stars of 1958•.

Other star backs to be named to the first team along with Redell wereRamona's Gary Mayer" top scorer in the ClF for 1958; Len Kelly, St. Monica's acehalfback; John Sheeler, Hartts all-around tailback; and Beaumont's George Farrell.

Gary Nayer, right halfback on Glenn Forsythe's championship Ramona eleven,scored 191 points for the ~eason, some 44 points ahead of his closest competitor,Jim Shepherd of Needles, which Ramona defeated in the finals of the HAft school play­offs 26-21. John Sheeler, "'1'110 led Hart to the semi-finals of the AA school playoffslosing there to San Marino, accounted for 1300 yards in eight games and scored 96points. lIe is the only junior on the first team. George Farrell, Player of theYear in the Riverside County League from Beaumont, completed 107 of 180 passes for1591 yards and 16 touchdowns to rank as one of the southland's top prep throwers.Len Kelly scored 105 points for St. Monica ts 1 leading his team to second place inthe Olympic League standings for 1958.

Claremont, champions of the AA Section of the ClF for 1958,. placed twoplayers on the all-star teams. l{ike Gonzalez, 200-pound guard and co-captain ofthe lrJolfpack, was named to the first team, while Don Kieselhorst, speedy halfbackwas picked on the second team. Ray Dial, all-around qlarterback from Brawley whoran and passed for 1250 yards, accounted for 15 touchdowns during the season. Hewas named to the third team. Nico Escamilla, iron man left-half on Santa ClaraHigh's varsity this fall, scored 132 points to rank fourth among ClF scorers. Hereceived a second~team spot. Mary Star's Don Shotliff, fullback and linebacker,was a pick on the third team. Don had a 7.8 rushing average and was tops on de­fense as well. IvJ:ar Vista'sJer~J Overton was a third~team selection off his fineall-around play. Jerry scored 62 points for the year~

Two players repeated on this season's team from last year. Bill Redellwas a first team member in '57, while Needles tackle Duane Lenz, a first-team pickthis year, was on the '57 third team. Two juniors are the only lower classmennamed. Hart's John Sheller and South Pasadena's Roger Clark. The rest are seniors.

Year by members of Helms All-Southern California Board of Footballwhen they met at Helms Hall last week to make their annual gridiron

selections. lorick is one of the very few past Los ~ngeles City Players of theYear to be named in his junior year.

Nineteen Los Angeles City High Senools are represented on this year'sAll-Los Angeles City High School three-squad team. Reseda High School, ValleyLeague champions, led the parade with four players being named to the honor teams,while North Hollywood, ~:lIilson, Huntington Park, Jefferson and playoff finalistsBanning and Fremont placed three players each.

Balloting for city Player of the Year was heated among board membersin attendance at the meeting. Following several ballots, Anthony lorick, who wasa second-team All-City selection on the 1957 All-City team was named for honors.Lorick finished the regular city season with 91 points for second place behind Nick~1eLean of North Hollywood who tallied 99. Including playoff games, however, theFremont fullback scored 123 points to wind up on top, six points ahead of theNorth Hollywood fullback. Lorick's total of 123 points fell just two shy of theall-time los Angeles City High School record set by Bill Howard of Manua} Artsback in 1930. Howard scored his 125 points in eight games.

Players of the Year from all six Los Angeles City leagues were namedon the three teams. Lorick (Southern League), McLean (Valley), and Dimkich (East­ern) were named to first-team backfield berths along with Banning's Robert Hernan­dez (Marine), who was a co-Player of the Year award winner along with San Pedro'sJimmy Zar, who was placed on the second team. ~iestern League co-Players of theYear were University's Bill Siler, named to the second team and Tony Mellos ofHamilton, who was named on the third squad. Bill Renison, \-lho led Eagle Rock toa second place finish behind ¥larshall in the Northem League, was that league'saward winner. Renison finished the regular season with 14 touchdowns, good enoughfor a third place scoring finish behind lorick and IvIcLean.

For having been named All-los Angeles City Football Player of the Yearfor 195B, Anthony l.orick will receive the Helms medal award at the 22nd annual All­Southern Califomia Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall onSaturday morning, January lOth at 10:30 a.m. At this time all those players namedfor Los Angeles City and Southern California C.I.F. Football team honors will berecipients of special Helms scroll awards.

For the tenth year, the tiT.J. Voit Rubber Corporation will presentspecial footballs to each member of the honored teams.

Only two players repeated from last yearts All-City teams. AnthonyLorick was named to the second team, while hitchell Dimkitch was also a second­team selection. Lorick is the only junior on the first two teams, while four ­Chana Lujan (Marshall), Skip Husbands (Huntington Park), Bill Renison (Eagle Rock),and Steve Ogden (Reseda) were named on the third team.

Special~adals will be awarded those boys named players of the year in their respectiveleagues for 1958, plus All-City player of the year medal to Anthony Lorick ofFremont High School. High School coaches and invited dignitaries from the football'I'Torld will be in attendance also.
