The new VMAX SHO series engines come in 250, 225 and 200hp models and all share a common, lusty 4.2-litre V6 powerhead. Despite the large capacity block, the motors weigh an amazing 229kg. The 250hp model is up to a whopping 39kg-59kg lighter than its major four-stroke competitors. The trio also weighs the same as compar- able brand two-stroke direct fuel-injected (DFI) out- boards and yet have a 0.76 to 1.17 litre larger capacity block. This easily gives the Yamahas the best power-to- weight ratio in the 200-250hp four-stroke and DFI two- stroke market classes. This has been achieved by using plasma-fused sleeveless cyl- inders instead of conven- tional steel, resulting in maximum powerhead dis- placement from minimum engine block mass. Yamaha says the sleeve- less surfaces are 60 per cent stronger and result in a more efficient heat transfer- cooling process from the cylinder walls for greater durability. Weight savings have also been achieved by using composite materials for the cowling and engine pan, along with a lighter alter- nator and exhaust system. Engineers have tested a new SHO four-stroke again- st the company’s own 3.3 litre DFI model and, on av- erage, say it burns about 12 per cent less fuel. The new outboards are covered by a two-plus-one- year manufacturer’s war- ranty, providing that use is solely recreational. The motors only come in long shaft (20-inch) models. The outboards are avail- able through all authorised Yamaha outboard dealers and are well worth a look. He and his team have been responsible for about half the company’s recent sales surge and delivered new vessels valued at more than $4 mill- ion to owners in March. ‘‘We are seeing people come in and want to look at the build list and spec up their boat for the first time since about 2010,’’ he said. Maritimo is cautiously op- timistic about the year ahead after starting 2012 so well. The company sold eight boats for up to $2 million each from late in December through to mid-January. The buyers have been lo- cals and from interstate and overseas, and the sales are a mix of stock and new builds. The vessels sold by Mariti- mo included two Maritimo 60 Motoryachts, which are about $2 million each, two M440s, an A55 Sports Flybridge and several other vessels. Maritimo is gearing up for the Sanctuary Cove In- ternational Boat Show on the Gold Coast from May 24-27.
