Abstract This paper is meant as a contribution to the study of verbal aspect and tense in Boeotian. It mainly seeks to explore the function of the means of morphological encoding of verbal aspect not only in a semantic level but mainly in regard to some contextual factors. Our corpus consists of decrees, manumissions and judicial texts (dating mostly from the 3th up to the 2nd century B.C.). The main conclusion seems to be that the encoding of verbal aspect takes place not only in a morphological level but also in a syntactic one, since certain contexts co-occur with remarkable regularity only with the form of certain tenses. That is especially important, because it helps us largely to reduce the cases where, in order to explain the occurence of d ifferent tense forms in (seemingly) similar contexts, we can only talk about neutralisation of oppositions.
