HAPPY FALL EVERYONE!!! The days are a bit cooler now but I don’t think the heat is finished with us yet so please continue to take good care of yourselves. Drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun…..or if you are in the sun use sunscreen. The holidays are just around the corner. For Halloween we have school children coming to Trick or Treat, which is always fun! The Thanksgiving and Christmas meals have been set up. We will keep you posted on specifics so please check with SMILE once in a while as Johnny is great about posting news about the events.

Corina the new Director of Resident Care is fully on board and doing a great job! We’re truly pleased to have her as part of our Team! We are hiring more Care Partners so that we can ensure that our staffing is appropriate on all shifts as we continue to grow. So you will see new faces in the community. Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself if you see someone new!

And don’t forget our CONNECTIONS Caregiver Support Group which occurs every 4th Thursday of each month here at the community. It’s a wonderful time to connect, share and laugh with other family members and caregivers. The group is hosted by our Executive Director, Wendy Martin, RN or Makayla Nizza, LVN and our Resident and Family Ambassador, Johnny Saiz, LMSW. They have much experience and lots of great information to share. Remember we are here to support not just your loved ones as our Residents but their loved ones, YOU, as well. Also remember that we are having our Family Council monthly now as requested. It is the 3rd Tuesday of each month so if you feel like dropping in for a chat please feel free to do so. That’s what we’re here for!

Wishing you HAPPY days! Wendy Jo Martin, RN, CDPExecutive Director

a lifestyle, a commitment, a dream...

Looking Ahead to Next Month

Donald Harold Swellander turned 90 years old last June. He is one of the founding residents of Poets Walk. He and his loyal companion, Irma, can be found at his special tables in the living room and dining room.

Donald grew up during the Great Depression and World War II in the town of Escanaba, Michigan, located on the upper peninsula of the state. After his high school graduation he joined the Merchant Marine and served as a medic on board merchant ships. As a young man from a remote town he enjoyed seeing New York City, San Francisco, Italy, and Japan. His world became much larger and more exotic. After attending university and business school for a few years he married his life partner Marian. When the Korean War began he again joined the military, this time the Air Force in which he served for twenty years. He and his family lived in Texas, Japan, and Hawaii during his Air Force service. After his military retirement he had a second career with the Texas Employment Commission where he served as an employment claims judge.

Family was always the center of Donald’s life. He and Marian had three children, Jan, Steve, and Eric. He always stressed family time, culture, and education for the entire

family. Their home was full of books and music. Both Donald and Marian earned Master’s degrees while raising their family. All three children achieved university degrees making their father proud.

After his retirement, Donald and Marian lived a quiet life enjoying their five grandsons and four great grandchildren. They were active in the First Unitarian Church of San Antonio and their neighborhood association. They were loved and admired by many friends for their kindness and decency. Donald never lost his love of books, music, and world affairs. Marian, his love and life companion died in January 2016.

In everything we do at Poet’s Walks, A Spring Hills Memory Care Community, we encourage health, wellness and peace of mind for total well-being. Our Signature Touches are services dedicated to caring for our residents by focusing on specific needs and desires, to enhance quality of life, respect time-honored passions, and engage residents in new experiences. From dining that truly satisfies to activities that Move the Body, Intrigue the Mind, and Inspire the Spirit, associates from every department, recognize the uniqueness of our residents, and each has a role to play. Residents continue to experience life at Poet’s Walk.

Care Flowers... Rose

Roses don’t like change and they are strong willed and like routine. ey will use old habits to get through the day. ey can “talk a good game” and always wants to know who is in charge. ey are also very territorial. Provide routine, choice and keep them informed.
