Dear friends, Thank you to everyone who has accompanied me on this journey to Final Vows and Diaconate ordination. Two weeks ago on Friday September 4th, I was blessed to profess my Final Vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross alongside four of my brothers and join forever with them this great band of men! When I first left home to go to Notre Dame in August of 2009 I did not expect to be so blessed as to meet the great family of Holy Cross that has now welcomed me as one of its own. To everyone who has prayed for me along the way, I am immensely grateful and am so joyful now to have found a home forever among my brothers. The next day was also incredibly special as I was ordained alongside three of my brothers to the order of the Diaconate. Ordination was a particularly moving moment for me and I was not expecting to be as emotional as I was. I thank God for the great grace it is now to serve as a Herald of His Gospel and a Servant to His People. That Mass was also moving as alongside us four of our brothers were also ordained as priests, including the now Fr. Zach who served here at St. Ignatius this past year.

The next day was a whirlwind of activity as I had the honor to serve as a Deacon at Fr. Zach’s first Mass in the morning and baptize my youngest niece in the afternoon. It was overall an incredible time and experience to be able to be again with my many brothers in the community that I hadn’t been able to see in person for a while. It is also great to be back home in St. Ignatius. Already I have had the chance to baptize, preach, and deacon here and am looking forward to much much more in the coming year! I ask that you continue to keep me in your prayers, you are all in mine. I am looking forward to continuing to get to know you all this coming year.

PRAY FOR THOSE IN NEED OF HEALINGOREMOS POR AQUELLOS QUE NECESITAN SANACIÓN

On September 10, 2020 we used our "new" altar at daily Mass for the first time. On March 19, 1962, The Feast of Saint Joseph, husband of Mary, Bishop Reicher consecrated this holy altar in the St. Joseph Hall Chapel at St. Edward’s University. Mass was celebrated daily at this altar with the Brothers of Holy Cross. We continue this long tradition of prayer and sacrifice, and we rejoice that this sacred altar will be the center of our liturgies at St. Ignatius Martyr. Thanks be to God!

Our students who are participating in virtual learning are alongside their classmates who are attending in person each day via upgraded technology throughout our school. Thank you for your support of our parish school through prayers and donations. We are beyond grateful for the generosity of our parishioners.

WORSHIP AND SACRED MUSIC Dr. John J. Hoffman, Director • [email protected]

MEH* MASS OR LITURGY FOR THE LEAST “Full, conscious, and active participation” in the Liturgy (as commended by the Second Vatican Council) is not only your/their right but also your/their duty and your/their responsibility. That responsibility includes full engagement throughout the liturgical celebration. The baptized faithful who form the congregation are called to join in praise and thanksgiving in song and spoken word, to listen attentively to God’s Word, and to exercise their baptismal priesthood in prayer for the Church, the world, and all in need during the Prayer of the Faithful. In the Liturgy of the Eucharist the baptized faithful join their prayer to that of the priest celebrant, offering Christ the Victim, “not only by means of the hands of the Priest but also together with him,” and offer themselves as well (GIRM, no. 95). Their participation culminates in the reception of the Body and Blood of the Lord, the sacrament that unites them more fully with Christ their Head and with one another. We need to be aware, therefore, that “participation” does not refer primarily to external activity or function during the celebration of Mass; rather, it refers to a deeply spiritual, interior participation of mind and heart, filled with devotion and penetrating the very depths of the mysteries we celebrate. (2010 usccb.org) Is my participation at Mass – “meh?” Here are some things to consider: Do I participate as fully as possible? Even though I might not be the greatest singer, do I sing and support our faith community’s prayer? Do I make the sign of the cross with a sense of reverence or do I look like I am swatting flies? Do I carry on conversations with others while in the church? Do I genuflect toward the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle or just sort take a dip, not making much of an effort? Do I dress like I am going somewhere important, even for daily Masses, really honor God? Do I seem happy to be at Mass or does my posture seem to say “leave me alone.” Do I give myself enough time before Mass to prepare my heart and to quiet my mind? I have often heard expressed by some well-meaning folks that we should be (God should be???) glad that “at least” people still show up for Mass. I don’t know about you, but for me, when I only do the least required for anything, I really don't place any value on it. Dr. John J. Hoffman * exclamation expressing a lack of interest or enthusiasm. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Your parish is open for Mass. Come back and celebrate the Mass with an in-person experience if you are able. We have plenty of space with appropriate distancing. Those who have been able to return are always expressing how much they appreciate all the protocols that the parish staff and volunteers employ and how much they enjoyed the celebration. Consult our website for more information.

Do you know anyone interested in becoming Catholic? No matter where we are on our faith journey, God is always calling us to draw closer to Him. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic or preparing for baptism as an adult, email or call Isaac Garcia to set up a time to talk. He’s available to talk during the day or in the evenings over Zoom or the phone. Do you seek community and want to grow in faith? In October, St. Ignatius will launch an initiative for adults to meet each other in the parish and grow in faith together. If you’re interested in learning more, please contact Isaac Garcia. Please welcome and pray for those our newest catechumens and candidates! Two people celebrated the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens and three people celebrated the Rite of Welcoming last weekend, September 13. Please keep these six people in your prayers as they continue their preparation to receive the Sacraments and to be received into the Catholic Church.

Thanks to the unwavering dedication and courage of a reduced number of volunteers (both parishioners and non-parishioners), coupled with strong financial and prayer

support, the pantry has been able to maintain and expand operations through the last (hopefully!) scorching summer month. In August the pantry served 657 households, including 1,761 individuals. Of these, 237 were homeless men, women and children. Last month 119 households came to us for the first time.

These numbers do not include those who took advantage of our Thankful Thursdays baked goods and produce distribution. We have had 323 people sign in, representing 741 individuals in their households. Of these, 31 came to the pantry for the first time.

The pantry remains open Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. On Thankful Thursdays we are open from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. for bread and produce distribution only. Parishioners are encouraged to come by – we have plenty of food!
