  • ORA

Nora is a form of customary performing arts that is popular in thé southern région of

Thailand. Main area of Nora troupes in Thailand is concentrated in thé four provinces

along thé shores of Songkhla Lake, which has long been thé center of Nora traditions:

Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Phatthalung and Trang. In addition, there are some

Nora troupes scattered in provinces of Surat Thani, Krabi, Narathiwat, Chumphon,

Pattani, Satun, Bang Saphan Noi district of Prachuap Khirikhan, Ranong, Yala and Phuket.

Thé main éléments and characteristics of Nora are thé costume and thé music. Nora

costume for thé main Nora performers - whether mâle or female - comprise of colorful

and décorative costumes, with a crown or "Serd "ornamented headdress, beads, bird-like

wings tied around thé waist, an ornate scarf, and a "Hang Hong "or swan tail on thé

back, made to give thé performer a bird-tike appearano. Performers also wear long

metallic fingernails that curl out from thé fingers. Nora music comprises mostly of

percussion instruments: Thaï southern oboe, drums, gongs, cymbals and wooden

    clappers.

Nora is divided into two types which are Nora for ritualistic oremony, called Nora Rang

    Khru, and one for entertainment.

Nora for ritualistic ceremony or Nora Rang Khru is a very important ritual dance for thé

Nora professionals. It is performed to invite thé spirits of thé past Nora masters to thé

cérémonial stage during thé rite to pay homage to them, to make votive offering to

them, and to initiate novices-the new génération of Nora performers. This type of Nora is

further subdivided into two kinds: Nora Rong Khru Yai (big ceremony) and Nora Rang

Khru Lek (small ceremony). Thé Nora Rang Khru Yai is thé full version of thé ritual

dance, which lasts three days and nights. It usually starts on a Wednesday and ends on a

Friday and it must be performed every year or every three or five years, depending on

thé belief of différent Nora schools. Thé ritual performance of Nora Rang Khru Lek lasts

one day and one night. It usually begins on a Wednesday evening and ends on

    a Thursday.

Nora for entertainment is performed for thé entertaining purposes. Performers show off

their dance skill and talent movements and improvising oral singing in local southern Thaï

dialect along with musical rhythm to amuse thé audiences. In thé performance of Nora

for entertainment, each Nora troupe has its own customary séquences to be performed,

    starting from:

  • . Playing an invocation music; after setting up thé music ensemble in place,

music will be played to invoke thé deities and spirits in that place in order to ask for

    permission to perform Nora at that place;

    . Overture;

. Invocate sacred verse to pay homage to thé teachers or past Nora masters; and

    Perform singing and dances

There are five main lineages currently practice Nora in Southern Thailand. They are

    l) Phum Theva and 2) Plaek Tha Kae - both based in Patthalung province; 3) Paen

Krueng Ngam and 4) Term-Win-Wad - both based in Trang province and 5) Yok Talay

Noi - based in Songkhla province. Thèse five lineages inherited knowledge and skills

from twelve earlier Nora lineages. Each of thèse lineages has a troupe with its own

performers, musicians, ritual masters, costume and set makers, and instrumentalists.

Besides its entertainment and thé ritualistic values, Nora also serves as thé média to

disseminate news, messages and information to thé people, because it can easily access

and communicate with thé peuple. Nora therefore remains thé preferred type of

performing arts for thé southerners and continues to be popular even in thé fast-

    changing world of today.

Currently, Nora is also taught in éducation System both primary and secondary schools

throughout Southern Thailand. In addition, it is led to university éducation as a sélective

subject and thé Nora major for some universities thus students can pursue for their

    career in thé future.
