Cap and Trade - market-based policy tool for curbing carbon emissions. First, an environmentalregulator sets an aggressive cap or maximum limit on carbon emission allowance. Then, emissionsources are given the opportunity to design their own compliance strategy to meet the overall reduction requirement. This includes the sale or purchase of carbon credits, installation of pollution controls, and implementation of efficiency measures, among other options.

Carbon Credits- part of the cap and trade approach to reducing emissions. Credits serve as theunits of carbon emissions that can be purchased and sold between participating sources (companies, countries, etc.) in order to meet the cap on carbon emissions allowance. Example: If Company A generates 100 tons of emissions over the cap and Company B generates 100 tons under the cap, Company A can buy credits from Company B in order to meet the cap.

Important Terms

Carbon Footprint- the impact that human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced through energy use, travel, food choices, etc., measured in tons of carbon dioxide.

Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS)- is a regulation that requires the increased production of energy from renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal. Another common name for the same concept is renewable electricity standard (RES).

Feed- In Tariff - is a policy mechanism designed to encourage the adoption of renewable energy sources. It typically includes three key provisions: 1) guaranteed grid access, 2) long-term contracts for the electricity produced, and 3) purchase prices that are methodologically based on the cost of renewable energy generation. [3]

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) - is a legal contract between an electricity generator and a power purchaser. The power purchaser purchases energy, and sometimes also capacity and/or ancillary services, from the electricity generator. Such agreements play a key role in the financing of independently owned (i.e. not owned by a utility) electricity generating assets.

Carbon Neutral - refers to achieving net zero carbon emissions by balancing a measured amount of carbon released with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset.

Net Metering- Electricity generated by Solar PV above the needed amount is credited back to the household generating it in monies by the utility company.

Green Collar Jobs- jobs within both environmental and conventional industries that incorporate sustainable practices and materials. Green collar jobs contribute to environmental protection and restoration.

What makes (Geothermal) heat pumps over 300% efficient? A geothermal system is the total comfort system with the lowest overall cost.  With most ordinary systems, overall operating costs are based on the efficiency of more than one system - a fossil fuel furnace, a central air conditioner and a water heater.  With a geothermal system, all operations are handled by one system, assuring that efficiency and savings are achieved in all areas.  In addition, system maintenance and life span should not be overlooked.  For instance, ordinary systems frequently require regular maintenance for the furnace and the air conditioner.  However, a geothermal system requires little or no maintenance beyond periodic checks and filter changes. When faced with the purchase of a new heating, cooling, and water heating system, you have two choices; either burn money with an ordinary system or save it with a geothermal system.

Heating CycleDuring the heating cycle, the fluid circulates through the loop extracting heat from the ground. The heat energy is transferred to the geothermal unit.

The unit compresses the extracted heat to a high temperature and delivers it to your home through a normal duct system or radiant heat system.

Cooling CycleFor cooling, the process is simply reversed. Because the earth is much cooler than the air temperatures on a hot day, the geothermal system

removes heat from the home and deposits into the ground. The fluid is cooled by the ground temperatures and returned to the unit for cooling your home.

ST201: Solar & Radiant Heating Systems Become a part of the burgeoning radiant heating industry and a rapidly growing solar marketplace. This 3 day course provides critical information to design practical and efficient solar and radiant heating systems for energy and cost savings with the comfort of under floor heating.

PV100: Photovoltaic Design & Installation This workshop is great for people who are seeking employment within the growing solar industry, wanting to install it on their own home, or interested in learning more about this amazing technology.  Available in 2-week and 6-day sessions, this course teaches the technical skills necessary to design and safely install all 3 types of solar-electric systems: batteryless grid-tie, grid-tie with battery back-up, and stand-alone systems. The two-week sessions of this class include 5 days in the classroom and 5 days of hands-on installation in the PV Lab yard. 6 day sessions include 4 days in the classroom and 2 days of hands-on installation or labs.
