1620 decided to head to America on a boat known as the Mayflower.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

They were trying to go to Virginia, but a storm blew them off course and they landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts (Cape Cod)

Mayflower Compact

Since there was no government set up in Plymouth they created the Mayflower Compact before getting off the boat.

It was a social contract that established a SELF GOVERNING colony

Puritans Another group of English Protestants

came to practice their religion without persecution.

Puritans wanted to “purify” the Church. Landed in Massachusetts Bay (North of

Plymouth) Wanted to establish a “City Upon a Hill” –

a symbol of goodness and virtuous living for all the world to see
