Project Title: Sustainable Manufacturing Metrics Accurately Define and Reflect Sustainable Values
Project Team: Academia, Industry, NGO Goal Statement:
Develop metrics that accurately define and reflect sustainable values for all aspects of sustainable manufacturing.
Project CP1
Funding Leader: Industry, Government (NIST) End-Users: Educators, NGO’s, Investors,
Government, Industry Statement of need/pain: Currently used metrics
are inadequate for 3BL evaluation across all aspects of products, processes, and systems
Value Proposition◦ Standardized quantification◦ Provides a foundation for all sustainable manufacturing
decision making◦ Guide corporate behavior and performance
Project CP1- Business Case
Project Title: Comprehensive Risk Modeling Tool for Supply Network Management
Project Team: Universities, NGO’s, Industry Goal Statement:
Develop an intuitive risk modeling tool for supply network management with adjustable dashboard to identify and quantify business decisions.
1) The tool accommodates analysis of risk interdependencies, sustainability tradeoffs, and catastrophic failures within the supply network.
2) Special attention is paid to modeling unintentional consequences and potential technology changes.
Project CP2
Funding Leader: Government (common good) and Trade Organizations
End-Users: Business management/leadership Statement of need/pain: Increasingly global &
complex supply network; current risk models do not consider all factors; consequences are severe; no consideration of risk propagation
Value Proposition ◦ Provide dynamic real-time risk propagation mitigation◦ Improved risk aversion◦ Protection of brand image
Project CP2- Business Case
Project Title: Develop an Affordable Applicable, Actionable, and Scalable Life-Cycle Analysis
Project Team: Academia, Industry, NGO Goal Statement
Simplify the use and broaden the scope of the life-cycle assessment process to include economic, environmental, geographic, and societal aspects. The end result is a solution that is affordable, applicable, actionable, and scalable (available to companies of all sizes). The LCA will include the 6R concept and can be applied to products, processes, and systems.
Project CP3
Funding Leader: University led consortium with government and industry participation
End-Users: Industry, at multiple levels Statement of need/pain: Total 3BL cost is not
typically evaluated which leads to sub-optimal solutions and wasted assets. Present LCA is inadequate, and is not widely used because it is too expensive and time consuming.
Value Proposition◦ Brand enhancement◦ Better resource and supply chain partner selection◦ Improved understanding of total cost of ownership (TCO) and
consequences◦ Better end-of-life management and waste reduction

Project Title: Develop and deploy a decision support system that incorporates risk and 3BL value
Project Team: Academia, Industry, NGO Goal Statement:
Develop a user-friendly interface and a model that allows us to base business decisions on the true cost of our business actions• Applies to all stakeholders
• Allows us to include stakeholder perspectives.
• Includes social, environmental, and economic sectors.
• Research methods to quantify value for elements not normally monetized. For example, societal or environmental aspects.
Project CP4
Funding Leader: Foundation, Industry Consortium
End-Users: Industry, at multiple levels Statement of need/pain: Today’s decision
support systems do not adequately address risk, 3BL costs, and tradeoffs
Value Proposition◦ Improved accountability at all levels◦ Effective management performance incentives◦ Improved profits◦ Improved corporate social responsibility
