“It is by your holding to the word of life… that I did
not run in vain or labor in vain.” Philippians 2:16
Dear Friends,
Spring is track season and if you watch the newspaper you will read names and see faces of some of
our athletes. Encourage them. This is an important time in their lives. My father still likes to tell
of setting school track records when running as “anchor” for his high school two mile relay team.
I liken the transition of one pastor to another to being like the passing of the baton in a relay. A
good runner paces themself and then with a burst of their final reserve stretch forward to make a
good hand off to the next runner. The end of June, I will be passing the baton as I complete my
time at 1st UMC. Today I am pleased to share with you that which was announced on Palm Sun-
day, the name of my successor, Rev. Deborah Stowers. She is one I personally know to have a keen
mind, a warm heart and a humble spirit.
Rev. Stowers comes here from a successful ministry of seven years at the Sergeant Bluff UMC.
Best wishes to you, Pastor Dave, and all the church staff as you prepare to welcome your new pas-
tor. She will be in the pulpit for the first time Saturday, July 6th and Sunday, July 7th. Plan to be in
the crowd that day to say “Welcome”. In the mean time encourage her with a personal note, her
address is P.O. Box 661, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa 51054-661. Pray for an openness to the wind of the
Holy Spirit in this next “leg” of the race. And remember that the goal is always the same. That by
being a spiritual home that welcomes, equips and sends each one into the ministries to which Christ
calls us, you become partners in “making disciples for Jesus Christ.”
Blessings,
Pastor Herb
Middleburgh, NY Mission Trip
May 27-June 5
Rebuilding from Hurricane Irene Hurricane Irene was an eight day tropical cyclone, late August 2011. Irene is currently ranked as the seventh costliest hurricane in United States history.
Why not Super Storm Sandy? Several reasons
Rebuilding efforts have been greatly slowed due to city permits and local builders unions.
Federal bureaucracy has really slowed efforts.
Faith based organizations are really struggling. UMCOR is discouraged.
UMCOR is supporting the Middleburgh efforts. Greg Forrestor, who was in Cedar Rapids July
6, 2008, has been encouraging the locals.
Jack Hill came to Cedar Rapids with teams three times. Then, he helped 6 weeks during the
summer with team coordination. Jack will be our coordinator. This is Iowa giving back to
New York.
Cost (based on ten or more participants): $300 plus traveling food {$30 a day}
$100 building supplies, $120 gas ($3.80 gallon), $80 lodging and food

Mission Trips
Henderson Settlement Mission Trip June 30 – July 6
Work Camp serves two purposes at Henderson Settlement. First, and primarily, it serves as an
opportunity to educate persons in mission and the needs that exist amongst the less fortunate
in our society. Secondly, work camp often serves as the bridge between dreams and reality for
families of the Laurel Fork Valley of southeastern Kentucky, while giving groups the oppor-
tunity to witness for Christ through home repair.
Work camp teams travel within a twenty mile radius from Henderson Settlement located in
Frakes, KY. Work teams are able to adopt home repair projects and raise the money for the
project, adopting projects within their team’s means. The project (or projects) a team selects
should be equal to the skill level of the team leaders. Projects can also be adopted on the
Henderson Settlement campus that helps maintain the ministries we can’t take out into the
community.
Cost:
(June, July, August) $225.00/ person plus traveling and food while traveling.
As a group we will decide our projects at our team meeting and then raise the funds for the
projects.
The $225.00/ person include all lodging, meals, supervision, recreation facilities, and even
program activities while at Henderson Settlement. Wireless Internet access is available at the
Mission Dorm facility.
We will leave Mt. Pleasant on June 30 and return on July 6.
Team Meeting April 6 to decide projects and plan fundraisers.

Sunday, April 28th from 8 – 9 am as part
of a statewide effort to raise money for the
Imagine No Malaria project. Imagine No
Malaria is a comprehensive anti-malaria
campaign run by The United Methodist
Church. The ministry mission statement is:
Imagine No Malaria is an extraordinary ef-
fort of the people of The United Methodist
Church, putting faith into action to end pre-
ventable deaths by malaria in Africa, espe-
cially the death of a child or a mother. As a
life-saving ministry, Imagine No Malaria aims to raise $75 million to empower the people
of Africa to overcome malaria’s burden. Imagine No Malaria works in partnership with the
United Nations Foundation and the Global Fund. This program is focused on delivering
four key components: prevention, treatment, education, and communications. You will be
hearing more about this important project throughout the year.
What’s Dishin’ with Missions? Greetings,
As we enter the month of April, many families are getting their
summer plans put together and some are getting them finalized.
Summers are a time that most of our youth and children look for
ward to; a time of freedom, play and growth. Summer is also a
time for spiritual growth. Summer Church Camp gives people of
all ages a wonderful opportunity to experience our wonder-filled God in new and exciting
ways.
I admit I have a bias toward camp, but that is because I have seen the differences between a
church who has active camping ministry and those that don’t. Those that do tend to have a
strong Christian Education program not just for children and youth but for all ages. A
week of camp in double the amount of Christian Education that a child receives in Sunday
School during an entire year. Now, camp doesn’t replace Sunday School, but enhances it
and reinforces the values and life lessons learned.
I would love to see Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church be a leader in Camping
Ministry. I would love to have so many children, youth and adults going from our commu-
nity that we have to take the church bus and other vehicles to fit everyone. To start us in
this ministry I would like to see 20 children and youth from our church attend church camp
this summer at Pictured Rocks, Okoboji, Wesley Woods or Summer Games University on
Grinnell College campus.
I know that when making summer plans, money can and is a big influence on whether or
not something happens. I do not believe that cost should keep someone from going to
church camp and neither do others within our church. There are funds available through
the church to help cover the cost of camps and I will sponsor 3 youth to attend to Summer
Games University. I challenge others to step forward and be willing to sponsor someone to
go to church camp. I consider this an investment in our church and community.
If you would like to learn more about Church camps, there are catalogs at the Welcome
Center or talk with me.
Be bold, be strong,
Pastor Dave
