  • Fallen Angel 180 All Tube Head:

This amplifier helps the professional livegigging guitarist get a saturated and singingsoloing voice that still retains the big bottomend punch required by so many of today’smusic styles. A fat bottom end requires a lotof power from the output stage to deliver thepunch needed for muted notes and chords. The Fallen Angel, with 180 Watts of rawpower derived from 6 x EL34 output tubes, does the business.

180 Watts may at first sound excessive for aguitar amplifier but music styles havechanged and amplifiers need to adaptaccordingly. This is even more relevant whenyou consider how many players now use 7string guitars. Most amplifiers wimp outwhen presented with 7 strings of chuggingpower chords because their output stagecan’t deliver.

With many tube amplifiers you only get thebest solo voice when the output stage isclose to working flat out. Then it’s often tooloud - so some kind of power soak device isused to get this sound at lower volumes andyou lose the power you require for chords. With the Fallen Angel 180, the solo voicecharacter comes from the carefully designedall tube pre-amp so you don’t have run it flatout for the best tone. However, if you docrank it up to the max, our 6 tube outputstage will saturate with the best of them sobe warned, it will be deafening!

Fat bottom end tone also comes from thepre-amp and with the Fallen Angel 180, ahuge 180 RMS Watts of output power isdelivered to the speaker stack. You’ll get anidea of the power required for different stylesif you watch the VU meter while playing - itmonitors the output power being used andyou will notice on muted chords with a fatchunky bottom end whack that it will bepeaking quite high showing that massiveamounts of power are required for thissound. With the same settings try ascreaming solo line and you will see thepower drop right back. This demonstrates

exactly what we are saying - that old styleamps are great for screaming solo lines butgive up on modern 7 string fat chords.

The CLEAN channel allows you to switchinstantly from huge body crunching chordsand screaming solo leads to crisp andsparkling arpeggio chords that ring out withunbelievable clarity. The dual effects loopsalso help here, allowing you to set upseparate effects for each channel. So you can(for instance) have a beautiful clean soundwith a swirling chorus on Channel 1, and asoaring solo voice with lashings of delay onChannel 2 - then instantly switch betweenthe two. Either or both effects loops can beassigned to either or both channels.

Also supplied with the Head is a dedicated 4-way footswitch on a single jack lead (nomore fiddling with multi-way connectors).LED indication on the footswitch itself isprovided so you always know the currentstatus without having to look at the amplifier.Footswitch provides control for Channel1/Channel 2, Channel 2 Boost, Master1/Master 2 and Loop In/Out.

Fallen Angel 40 DSP and 60 DSP Combos, and 60 DSP Head:

The Fallen Angel 40 DSP and 60 DSP combos(and 60 DSP head) amplifiers are built on thesame principles as the 180 Watt head andsuit the same heavier guitar playing styles. They have been designed to produce themaximum bottom end possible from anopen back cabinet. For extended low endand maximum ‘Punch’ it is recommendedthat they be used with a 4 x 12 closed backcabinet.

  • Front Panel Facilities

INPUT - The single jack input socket perfectlymatches passive guitars with its very highimpedance but still retains sufficientheadroom to cope with the output frommodern active instruments.

CHANNEL 1Channel 1 is intended to be used mainly as aCLEAN channel.

GAIN - The setting of the GAIN control willdepend very much on the output level of theguitar being used. For single coil pickups thesound will be clean for most of the range ofthe control with a slight edge only on themaximum setting. For humbucking pickupsthe sound will be clean up to about 12O’clock with a slight edge being addedbeyond this and a definite crunch onmaximum.

TREBLE, MIDDLE, BASS - The Treble, Middleand Bass controls are a traditional passiveguitar tone network and as such areinteractive in their function. This type of tonenetwork provides the best overall characterfor the guitar, giving a classic, vintage, full-bodied guitar tone. The values ofcomponents used in the Channel 1 tonecontrol network have been chosen to bestsuit a Clean and Sparkling guitar tone.

VOLUME - Channel 1 has its own Volumecontrol to allow Channel 1 and Channel 2 tobe easily balanced in level against each other. It is best in terms of background noise andoverall tone to set this control as high aspossible and the Master control as low aspossible for the required playing volume.

CHANNEL SELECT AND CHANNEL 2 BOOST(180 Head) - Between Channel 1 andChannel 2 there are 2 push buttons used forselecting ‘Channel 1/Channel 2’ and ‘Channel2 Boost’ from the front panel. If thefootswitch is to be used these push buttonsmust be in their OUT position for thefootswitch to operate. Channel 1 or Channel2 activity is indicated by LEDs above thispush button. An LED above and to the rightof the Channel 2 Gain control indicatesChannel 2 Boost.

CHANNEL SELECT AND CHANNEL 2 BOOST(40 DSP & 60 DSP Combos, 60 DSP Head) -Between Channel 1 and Channel 2 there is asingle push button used for selecting‘Channel 1/Channel 2’ from the front panel. Ifthe footswitch is to be used this push buttonmust be in its OUT position for the footswitchto operate. Channel 1 or Channel 2 activity isindicated by LEDs either side of this pushbutton. Channel 2 Boost can only be selectedfrom the footswitch and an LED to the rightof the Channel 2 Gain control indicatesChannel 2 Boost.

CHANNEL 2Channel 2 is a very versatile channel and canbe used for styles including fluent soloplaying, power chords, big fat bottom endmuted notes and chords, and screamingover-the-top lead lines. Due to the dynamicsavailable on this channel, the guitars’ ownvolume control can open up a whole range ofother uses. For instance by winding theguitar volume back and playing lightly it canbe clean. Hit the string a bit harder and it hasand edge to it. Crank it up to wind into asinging soloing voice. Muted notes andchords retain a solid fat bottom end whilstsolo lines can be full and singing with asaturated, smooth distortion that still retainsa degree of dynamics.

GAIN/CHANNEL 2 BOOST - Channel 2 Gaincontrol has a vast range available (especiallywhen used with the Channel 2 Boost facility). At its lowest setting Channel 2 can be clean. At its maximum setting it provides a fullysaturated, very high gain, over-the-top leadtone. We have been very careful to ensurethat the fat bottom end is retainedthroughout the entire range of this Gaincontrol. Channel 2 has been designed toallow you to set the GAIN control somewherein the middle of its range for chords andgeneral playing. Then you can use the BOOSTto add that extra gain for soloing, over-the-top fat muted chords or muted note lines.Adding the BOOST also makes this channelideal for tapping styles. If you want balls out,over-the-top guitar then Channel 2 can beused with maximum GAIN and BOOST. Bewarned - you will have such a massive degree

of gain that it may be somewhatuncontrollable.

TREBLE, MIDDLE, BASS - The Treble, Middleand Bass controls are based on a traditionalpassive guitar tone network and as such areinteractive in their function. This type of tonenetwork provides the best overall characterfor the guitar, giving a classic, full-bodiedguitar tone. The values of components usedin the Channel 2 tone control network havebeen chosen to best suit a modern, highgain, saturated guitar sound (with bigbottom end).

It is recommended to use the Treble andMiddle controls set between minimum and12 O’clock. The bass control can be used seton maximum if desired.

180 Watt Head Only - Because the 6-tubeoutput stage of this amplifier reacts so wellwith the speakers used, the tonal charactercan change drastically from one model ofspeaker to another. We recommend thespeakers in Ashdown 4 x 12 cabinets to bestsuit this amplifier.

VOLUME - Channel 2 has its own Volumecontrol to allow Channel 1 and Channel 2 tobe easily balanced in level against each other. It is best in terms of background noise andoverall tone to set this control as high aspossible and the Master control as low aspossible for the required playing volume.

EFFECTS LOOP PUSH BUTTONS (180 Head)- There are 4 push buttons for assigning the 2effects loops to either Channel 1, Channel 2or both. The first 2 push buttons are forChannel 1. The top button assigns Loop 1 toChannel 1. The lower button assigns Loop 2to Channel 1. With both buttons IN, bothLoop1 and Loop 2 are assigned to Channel 1.The next set of 2 push buttons perform thesame operation for Channel 2. This effectsscheme provides a supremely flexible effectsfacility. Switching is also provided on theback panel for selecting either Serial orParallel effects loops.

EFFECTS IN/OUT (180 Head) - To the right ofthe Effects assignment section are two morepush buttons. The top one activates theeffects loops from the front panel. The LEDabove the 4 effects assignment buttonsindicates Loops active. If you are using thefootswitch then leave this front panel pushbutton in its OUT position.

INTERNAL DSP EFFECTS (40 DSP & 60 DSPCombos, 60 DSP Head) - The 40 and 60 DSPcombo amplifiers and 60 DSP head have 16built in Digital Signal Processor (DSP) effects. These can be selected from the 16 way rotaryswitch. The 16 Effects available are: 4 xChorus, 4 x Flanger & 8 x Delay, all have beenspecially created specifically for guitar use.The DSP Effects can be switched IN/OUT withthe front panel push switch. Effects IN isindicated with the LED next to this pushbutton switch. If you are using the footswitch then leave this front panel pushbutton in its OUT position.

INTERNAL DSP REVERB (40 DSP & 60 DSPCombos, 60 DSP Head) - The level of theDSP reverb is set using the Reverb Levelcontrol next to the 16 way rotary switch. Theactual type of REVERB has been speciallycreated for guitar use and to be a bigimprovement over traditional Spring Reverb.

MASTER 1/MASTER 2 - Two selectableMaster Level controls are provided for furtherflexibility. The push button to the side of

these can be used to switch between Master1 and Master 2. If you are using thefootswitch then leave this front panel pushbutton in its OUT position. This is a veryuseful facility which allows instant switchingbetween two pre-set volume levels on eitherchannel. LEDs at the top right of each controlindicate which is active.

VU METER - The VU meter indicates outputpower level.

STANDBY AND POWER SWITCH - Alwaysmake sure the Standby switch is in its OFFposition before activating the main Powerswitch. Allow the amplifier to warm up for atleast 1 minute before setting the Standby toON. Following this procedure every time youuse the amplifier will prolong the life of thetubes. Always allow the tubes to cool downwell before transporting the amplifierotherwise damage to the tubes can easilyresult.

Never remove or replace the plug onthe supplied cable. Always replace the fusewith the same type and rating as stipulatedon the rear panel adjacent to the mains inletsocket.

FOOTSWITCH SOCKETS - There are 3footswitch sockets provided on the amplifier. For any of these footswitch sockets tooperate, it is essential that the correspondingfront panel push buttons are in the OUTposition. The first of these sockets is a monojack for connection of the supplied 4-wayfootswitch. Always connect this prior toturning on the power to the amplifier asfootswitch power is derived from theamplifier. The next 2 footswitch sockets areboth stereo sockets and use a standard 2-way, push on/push off type footswitches fortheir operation. These may be used as analternative to the dedicated 4-way footswitchsupplied.

EFFECTS LOOPS (180 Head) - There are 2Effects Loops provided on this amplifier. Eachhas two jack sockets for Effects Send & EffectsReturn signals; the Effects return socket alsohas an Effects Return Level control associatedwith it for adjusting the level of the returnedsignal. There is a single push button fordedicating these Effects Loops as either Serial(where the signal path through the amplifieris broken by the effects loop) or Parallel(where the effects return signal is in parallelwith the signal through the amplifier). Usethe 4 front panel push buttons for assigningeither of the 2 Effects Loops to Channel 1,Channel 2 or both.

N.B. Switching the effects loop IN (in Serialmode) when there are no effects connectedwill MUTE the amplifier as there will be nosignal returned to either Effects Returnsocket.

EFFECTS LOOP (40 DSP & 60 DSP Combos,60 DSP Head) - The Effects Loop on theseamplifiers is a Serial loop. This has two jacksockets for Effects Send & Effects Returnsignals; the Effects return socket also has an

Effects Return Level control associated with itfor adjusting the level of the returned signal.

SPEAKER EMULATED LINE OUTPUT (40DSP & 60 DSP Combos, 60 DSP Head) - The40 & 60 DSP combos and 60 DSP head have aspecial Speaker Emulated Line Output jacksocket that can be used for direct recordingthe guitar sound. This has a specialEqualisation circuit that Emulates thecharacteristics of the loudspeaker/Outputstage combination.

SPEAKER OUTPUT SOCKETS & IMPEDANCESELECTOR (180 Head)

There are 3 speaker output sockets provided. The one on the far right is fixed at 16 Ohmsshould be used if you are driving just one 4 x12 cabinet (16 Ohms). The other two socketsare connected in parallel with theIMPEDANCE SELECT switch controlling theircombined impedance. Follow the schemeprinted on the back panel (and reproducedhere) adjacent to these sockets for thecorrect impedance to use for various speakercombinations.

WARNING – Do not use open back cabinetswith this amplifier as the low-end power thatthe amplifier produces will cause the conesof the speakers to be damaged. Never runthe amplifier without a speaker connected asthis will damage the output transformer.

SPEAKER OUTPUT SOCKETS & IMPEDANCESELECTOR (40 DSP & 60 DSP Combos, 60DSP Head) - There are 3 speaker outputsockets provided. The one on the far right isfixed at 16 Ohms and should be used if youare driving just one 4 x 12 cabinet (16 Ohms). The other two sockets are connected inparallel with the IMPEDANCE SELECT switchcontrolling their combined impedance.

INTERNAL SPEAKER 8 OHMS - This is thesocket for connection to the internal 8 Ohmspeaker. The impedance select switch shouldbe set to 8 Ohms for use with the internalspeaker only (as indicated by the graphics).

EXTERNAL SPEAKER 8 OHMS - This is anexternal speaker socket for connecting to an8 Ohms speaker such as a 2 x 12 cabinet(normally 8 Ohms). This socket is in parallelwith the internal speaker socket, so if anexternal 8 Ohms speaker is used with theinternal speaker still connected then theimpedance select switch will need to be setto 4 Ohms (as indicated by the graphics).

WARNING - Never run the amplifier without aspeaker connected as this will damage theoutput transformer.
