PREDICTIVE BRAIN, EMOTION AND INTEROCEPTIVE INFERENCE

I recently get interested in Predictive Coding models of the brain in the framework of emotional processing and psychopathological conditions. I am interested in developing models that include multiple, hierarchically arranged brain-body variables (e.g., sensory, physiological, interoceptive), and study quantitatively how these variables interact over time; how they are dynamically weighted; if a specific variable or dynamical state of the system might work as a "marker" of psychopathological conditions (e.g., anxiety disorders) that could be possibly used for screening and prevention; and if ways of restoring the correct system dynamics can be found to be used as treatments.

SENSORIMOTOR INFLUENCES ON (ABSTRACT AND EMOTIONAL) CONCEPTS ACQUISITION AND REPRESENTATION

This new line of research explores the impact of the extensive use of an oral device since infancy (pacifier) on acquisition of concrete, abstract and emotional concepts. While recent evidence showed a negative relation between pacifier use and children's emotional competence, the possible interaction between use of pacifier and processing of emotional and abstract language has not been investigated. According to recent theories, while all concepts are grounded in sensorimotor experience, abstract concepts activate linguistic and social information more than concrete ones. Since the pacifier affects facial mimicry forcing mouth muscles into a static position, we hypothesize its possible interference on acquisition/consolidation of abstract and emotional concepts, which are mainly conveyed during social and linguistic interactions, than of concrete concepts. First grade children, with a history of different frequency of pacifier use, provided oral definitions of the meaning of abstract, emotional and concrete words. Main effect of concept type emerged, with higher accuracy in defining concrete and emotional concepts with respect to abstract concepts, independently from pacifier use. Further analyses suggest that the use of pacifier differently modulates the conceptual relationships elicited by emotional and abstract concepts. Children who overused the pacifier (for more than three years) tend to distinguish less clearly between concrete and emotional concepts and between concrete and abstract concepts than children who did not use it or used it for short. As to the conceptual relations they produced, children who overused the pacifier tend to refer less to their experience and to social and emotional situations, use more exemplifications and functional relations, and less free associations.

THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN PERCEPTION, ACTION AND COGNITION

In a series of experiments within Goal-Leaders and WoRHD projects, we are measuring healthy adults' hand movements toward one of two items alternatives, and recording the streaming x, y coordinates of the computer mouse (i.e., a kinematic measure) during categorization tasks. Results show that decision-making and action execution are not separate cognitive stages. Rather, we observe dynamic competition between different processing levels, where partially activated representations (for the decision alternatives) continuously interact into a single categorization outcome. The use of an action-dynamics approach allowed to visualize the link between cognitive processes and hand

BEHAVIORAL MEASURES OF WRITTEN LANGUAGE PROCESSING IN NORMAL AND IMPAIRED POPULATIONS

The research topic that I have investigated the most is visual word recognition. I consider visual word recognition a primer phenomenon to study high-level cognitive processes, and how they interact with sensorimotor processes. To this end (within the Reading and Lexical Processing Lab [W-READ] of the ISTC-CNR and the Adult Cognition and Neuropsychology group of the Department of Psychology of the University of York), we use behavioral experimental paradigms (i.e., Visual Single Word Recognition and Visual Lexical Decision) to study language processes in participants with different expertise (adult and children) and different proficiency (typical readers, acquired/developmental dyslexia). We have also developed two lexical databases, reporting norms for psycholinguistic variables for a large number of Italian words. Within the WoRHD project, I explored the impact of auditory deprivation on word recognition. Results showed that mode of communication (oral vs signed language) modulates the lexicality effect, suggesting that learning a sign language during development shapes visuo-motor representations of words, which are tuned to the actions used to express them (phono-articulatory movements vs. hand movements) and to associated perceptions.

COGNITIVE PROFILES AND REHABILITATION OF CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL AND ACQUIRED DEFICITS

Within the field of Developmental Neuropsychology, I am studying how does deficits in sensory-motor domains occurring at different developmental stages affect cognitive processes.  I am particularly interested in Cerebral Palsy, a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitations that are attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain. In the context of this clinical condition, I have explored neurovisual functions, visuo-spatial and working memory abilities.
