What is NNELS?•NNELS is downloadable ereading service of alternative format materials available to public library patrons with a perceptual disability.

What is a perceptual disability?• severe or total impairment of sight or the

inability to focus or move one’s eyes;• inability to hold or manipulate a book;• reading impairment relating to comprehension.

Why are we able to do this?• 32. (1) It is not an infringement of copyright

for a person with a perceptual disability, ... or for a non-profit organization acting for the benefit of such a person to– (a) make a copy or sound recording of a

literary … work, in a format specially designed for persons with a perceptual disability;

What do I do?• I work with closely with a Content

Coordinator at the British Columbia Libraries Cooperative, Cynthia Ng, and accessible format conversion specialists to make accessible copies of books

How is a Daisy Book Made?1. Scan a book

2. Use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to produce an etext file.

3. Use the functions available in Word to make it accessible

4. Produce and edit an XML file

5. Convert to Daisy

What is a Daisy Book?

How Important is this service?• This is a critical for the 3 Million Canadian who

cannot read conventional print material and who want to be full citizens in their communities, their province and in Canada, and to fully participate in Manitoban and Canadian culture.

What is important for authors, publishers and the community to know?• You can work with NNELS to make your

work accessible through a growing number of public libraries across Canada

• You can help make reading possible for Canadian’s coast-to-coast.
