[ 105 ] DISCOGRAPHY Roy Acuff was born in 1903 in Maynardsville, Tennessee, and was known as the King of Country Music. Acuff is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and won a Lifetime Achievement Grammy. Curb had the privilege of working with him in the 1970s, including his Billboard Country chart recording of “Back In The Country.” Ronnie Dove first hit the charts as a pop act in 1964, and he had 20 Hot 100 chart records over the next five years. Dove moved over to country music in the 1970s, and his recording of “Please Come To Nashville” – a cover of the Dave Loggins’ hit “Please Come To Boston” – was his initial chart record for Melodyland, the label formed as a partnership between Mike Curb and Motown’s Berry Gordy. His second chart single for that label, “Things,” was a rockabilly re-make of the 1962 Bobby Darin hit. The Everly Brothers didn’t move into solo careers until the 1970s. The brothers had been signed to Cadence Records in 1957, in a deal brokered by Wesley Rose; they had a string of hits for that label recorded at RCA Studio B (now owned by the Mike Curb Family Foundation) before moving to Warner Brothers in 1960. They broke professional ties with Nashville in 1961 and moved to California. Mike Curb had worked with Wesley Rose and Hickory Records during his time as head of MGM; in 1977 Curb was involved in a venture with ABC/Hickory that released “Since You Broke My Heart” by Don Everly, which landed on the Billboard Country chart. Later, Curb also recorded Phil Everly. Phil Everly was an important part of Curb Records’ transition to a more country-focused label. “We had a California perspective and I think that probably made our company different, because a lot of the artists on our label at that time wanted to experiment with a country-rock direction,” said Curb. “Sweet Southern Love” reached the Country chart in 1981. When Mike Curb was president of MGM, he madean agreement to distribute Hickory Records, the labelunder the Acuff-Rose umbrella headed by Wesley Rose. When Warner/Curb was created, the Hickorydistribution agreement continued. Later, Acuff-Rose wassold and Don Gibson was signed to Curb.

“Sweet Sensuous Sensations” was the next-to-lastchart record that Don Gibson had; it reached number 42on the Country chart in 1975. Gibson wrote suchclassics as “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Sweet Dreams”and “Oh Lonesome Me,” and Curb distributed his final24 chart records.

Dorsey Burnette and his brother, Johnny, are two ofthe pioneers of rockabilly music. Born in Memphis,Dorsey played in a group with Scotty Moore and BillBlack – members of Elvis’s first band – before joining hisbrother, Johnny, in a band. Dorsey and Johnny Burnett moved to California in

1957, where they wrote hits for Ricky Nelson and others.

In August 1964, Johnny Burnette died in a boatingaccident; Dorsey developed a solo career in country musicand signed with Melodyland. His first chart single was“Molly (I Ain’t Gettin’ Any Younger”), which made thecharts in summer 1975. “Ain’t No Heartbreak” wasanother of Burnette’s hits for the Curb-Gordy label.

Mike Curb wrote “If I Could Only Go Back Again”with Alan Osmond of The Osmond Brothers for the filmWhere the Red Fern Grows, based on the popular novel byWilson Rawls and starring James Whitmore, BeverlyGarland and Jack Ging. After this recording, which was also produced by

Curb, Andy Williams asked him to produce his album

The Way We Were forColumbia, which was his lastinternational Top 10 album.

Russ Regan, head of 20th Century Fox Records, was agood friend of Curb. After MGM was sold, Curb enteredinto a venture with Russ Regan that included SammyDavis Jr., Cotton, Lloyd and Christian, Lois Johnson, andMargo Smith.

Jim Vienneau partnered with Curb on Lois Johnsonand Margo Smith recordings and developed the idea torecord “There, I’ve Said It,” which became Margo’s firstTop 10 record.

Mike Curb initially approached Joe Smith at Warner Brothers with arecording by The Four Seasons, featuring Frankie Valli, entitled “WhoLoves You.” Smith liked the recording and set up a meeting betweenhimself, Curb and Mo Ostin, the head of Warner. Smith and Ostinwanted Curb to help Warner find singles for radio and they suggested theestablishment of the Warner/Curb record label. The Four Seasons hit was the first release under the Warner/Curb

label, restarting what was to become a very important part of the FourSeasons career, reaching number three on the Hot 100 (and staying onthe charts for 20 weeks). The film Body Slam combines the music business with professional

wrestling. When a down-at-the-heels artist manager can’t find gigs forhis rock n’ roll band, he decides to join forces with some wrestlers. Themovie starred Dirk Benedict and Tanya Roberts, along with some real-lifewrestlers: Rowdy Roddy Piper, Captain Lou Albano, Bruno Samartinoand The Iron Sheik. Directed by Hal Needham, the 1987 film featuredFrankie Valli and The Four Seasons on the soundtrack singing “TheBook Of Love,” a song originally recorded by The Monotones in 1958.“Swearin’ To God” was considered one of the first hit dance songs. Bob

Crewe had the idea to make a long version of the record, designed for danceclubs. Mike Curb co-published the song, which became a career record forFrankie Valli and reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The Hues Corporation was a trio (Hubert Ann Kelly,Bernard “St. Clair” Lee Calhoun Henderson and KarlRussell) formed in Los Angeles in 1969, with the original

members from Alabama, San Francisco and Ohio, respectively. Russell soon dropped out and was replaced byFleming Williams from Michigan. The group joined forces with producer Wally Holmes,

who named them “The Children of Howard Hues.”However, there were legal problems with that name, sothey were re-named The Hues Corporation. In 1973 theyhad a hit with “Rock The Boat.” Later, Curb released “ICaught Your Act,” which also hit the Billboard Hot 100.

“Da Doo Ron Ron” was written by theBrill Building songwriting team of JeffBarry and Ellie Greenwich, along withPhil Spector, who produced the originalrecording of this song with his famous“wall of sound” in 1963 with TheCrystals; it reached number three on theBillboard chart. The song was also releasedin 1972 by Ian Matthews. Shaun Cassidy’s manager, Ruth

Aarons, told Mike Curb “You’ve got to seeShaun – he’s exactly what you’re lookingfor. He’s your next star!” She was right, and Curb asked Michael Lloyd to produce“Da Doo Ron Ron” with Cassidy.Shaun Cassidy was the son of actor

Jack Cassidy and actress Shirley Jones andthe half brother of David Cassidy, who

starred with Jones on The Partridge FamilyTV show from 1970-1974. Shaun formedhis first rock band when he was 11; he wassigned to Curb/Warner by Mike Curb andhad his first hits in Europe, where hequickly became a teen idol in magazines. His debut single “Morning Girl” was aTop 20 hit in Europe in 1976. Cassidy starred in the television series The

Hardy Boys Mysteries from 1977-1979, so hewas seen in American homes each week atthe time when “Da Doo Ron Ron” hit. Thesingle was released in May 1977 and reachednumber one on the Hot 100. His debut album went triple Platinum

as he followed Donny Osmond – anotheryoung artist nurtured by Curb – as anAmerican teen idol.

In 1977 – while he was campaigningfor lieutenant governor of California –Mike Curb received a call from his long-time friend Bob Lifton, who had helpedfinance the movie Sessions but was hav-ing trouble finding distribution for thepicture. Lifton asked Mike to watch themovie and help with distribution. The producer of the movie, Joe

Brooks, asked Curb to help him re-workthe song “You Light Up My Life” so thatit could be released as a single. Curbgave the song to his artist Debby Booneand she agreed to sing it. Lifton alsoliked the song and suggested changingthe title of the movie to You Light Up MyLife. The movie and song were releasedin 1977.The song quickly became a hit, reach-

ing number one on the Hot 100 Chart inBillboard and becoming the first recordever to remain there for 10 weeks. In fact, according to Billboard charts, “You LightUp My Life” was the top record for theentire decade of the 1970s. In addition to the Hot 100, the record

reached number one on the AdultContemporary and number four on theCountry charts. It was also the first hitrecording in the fledgling contemporary

Christian music genre, which grewthroughout the 1980s and 1990s andbecame a major segment of the musicindustry. Motown founder Berry Gordy wanted

to find a family act like The Osmonds, and Mike Curb suggested Pat Boone’sfamily. Curb recorded “Please, Mr.Postman,” before discovering that TheCarpenters had already recorded it andplanned to release it as a single. “VivaEspaña” was recorded on that same ses-sion; it was originally a Spanish song forwhich Curb had written an English lyric.“It was a great moment when BerryGordy released it as a single on theMotown label,” said Curb. The four sisters, known as The Boone

Girls, reached the top 25 of the BillboardAdult Contemporary chart with theirMotown recording “When The LoveLight Starts Shining Through His Eyes.” Pat Boone had one of the greatest

careers in rock n’ roll music. His Billboardstatistics, in many ways, are second only tothe statistics of Elvis Presley. His record-ing of “Whatever Happened To GoodOld Rock And Roll” was an excellentexample of the many great records that Patrecorded for Curb during his career.

Lorrie Morgan is the fifth child of George Morgan, aformer member of the Grand Ole Opry whose “CandyKisses” in 1949 was the first in a string of hits. LorettaLynn Morgan made her Opry debut at 13 and became anOpry member in 1984.

In 1986 she married Keith Whitley, the legendarycountry performer who died while Lorrie was on the roadin Alaska. “Who Do You Know In California” was a hitfor its writer, Eddy Raven, in 1981. Morgan presents thefemale side of that question on her first Curb recording.

It’s unusual for an artist to sing all thesongs on a soundtrack album. Cotton,Lloyd and Christian not only sang all thesongs on the soundtrack for Pom Pom Girls, but they had a Top 10 Billboard single with“Go To Pieces.” Darryl Cotton was a talented singer

from Australia, Michael Lloyd was a

successful songwriter and producer, andChris Christian went on to form acompany signing and producing majorartists such as Amy Grant and B.J. Thomas. The soundtrack album, produced byMichael Lloyd and Mike Curb, wasreleased by 20th Century Fox in associationwith Crown International Films.

The Disney animated film Pete’s Dragon needed a titlesong to be sung by Helen Reddy, who was the voice ofthe lead character. Other characters’ voices were done byHollywood notables Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons,Shelley Winters and Jim Backus. Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn were asked to write the

song – the two are legendary Hollywood writers who havewritten two Academy Award-winning songs, including“The Morning After” from The Poseidon Adventure. MikeCurb, with Michael Lloyd and Kasha, produced “CandleOn The Water.”

Travis Wammack was a top session guitarist in MuscleShoals; Rick Hall produced some great records for him,but they never achieved significant chart success. “Do Me” is an example of Wammack’s talent; the

rhythm track is reminiscent of the Beatles “Get Back” onthe intro, and Wammack adds a soulful vocal and funkyguitar licks over the catchy groove.

Mark Lindsay was the lead singer for the band PaulRevere and The Raiders. The group had a career boostwhen they became regulars on the daily TV show Wherethe Action Is, produced by Dick Clark. Lindsay co-wrote most of The Raiders’ hits, and in

1975 began a solo career. He signed with Warner/Curband released “Sing Me Home.” At the same time, he alsorecorded Mike Curb’s composition of “Never Gonna GoBack There Again.”

North Carolina native Sammy Johns’ biggest hit was“Chevy Van” in 1975. Johns began his career on a smallindependent label that went out of business. Mike Curbobtained the rights to the Johns masters, re-released

“Chevy Van” and then released the positive love message“Peas In A Pod” on Curb Records. This recording wassuccessful on Adult Contemporary radio and reachednumber 11 on the Billboard chart.

Mike Curb’s former brother-in-law,Tony Scotti, shared a tape of a new groupnamed Foreigner with Mike. Warner wasnot interested in distributing the recordbecause Warner/Curb had Exile and didn’tfeel they could adequately promote both. Curb and Scotti agreed that they

should offer the group to Atlantic, whosigned them and gave a very generousoverride to both Curb and Scotti thatlasted for several Foreigner albums.

During their career, Foreigner had 23singles on the Billboard Hot 100,including “I Want To Know What LoveIs,” which was number one for two weeks, and 11 albums on the Billboard Pop chart– eight of which were certified Platinum. Their album 4 was number one on the

album chart for 10 consecutive weeks. Later,Curb had a major Billboard adult hit with “IWant To Know What Love Is” withWynonna Judd, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar.

“You Better Move On” was written byR&B singer Arthur Alexander, whoseversion hit in 1962; this recording was thefirst hit to come out of Rick Hall’s studio inMuscle Shoals. Tommy Roe had his first hitin 1962 with “Sheila” and had subsequenthits with “Sweet Pea” (1966), “Hooray ForHazel” (1966), “Dizzy” (1969), and “Jam UpAnd Jelly Tight” (1969). Mie Nemoto and Kei Masuda began performing in1976 as a schoolgirl folk duo. After winning an amateurtalent show on a Japanese television show, they changedtheir image and their sound – adding slinky dresses anddisco rhythms – and released their first single. Soon, they were superstars in Japan, and in 1978 they

made their first American appearance at the Tropicana

Hotel in Las Vegas. The duo appeared as guests on LeifGarrett’s variety special on CBS just before releasing thesingle “Kiss In The Dark” worldwide in 1979. Later, theyhad their own television show, Pink Lady, on NBC. Thissong, written by Michael Lloyd and published by Curb’spublishing firm, reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot100 chart.

The original version of “Cherry Pie” was recorded bySkip (Clyde Battin) and Flip (Gary Paxton), who met atthe University of Arizona. That 1960 version reachednumber 11. The Hagers – perennial favorites of the Hee Haw TV

show audience – covered the song for the country

market. David Geffen was looking for a country artist forhis Asylum label, which had recently merged withElektra, and Mike Curb suggested The Hagers. Curband Michael Lloyd co-produced the song “Cherry Pie”for Geffen’s label.

Susie Allanson had 12 chart records during the timewhen Curb was distributed by Warner Brothers and, later,Elektra Records. She reached the number one position inCashBox and number two in Billboard with “We Belong

Together.” She also had a Top 10 recording with “MaybeBaby,” originally recorded by The Crickets, featuringBuddy Holly.

The TV series Angie ran from 1979-1980 and starredDonna Pescow, Robert Hays, Debralee Scott and DorisRoberts. The theme song for the show was “DifferentWorlds,” sung by Maureen McGovern, who – in additionto her success as a pop recording artist – had appeared inthe movies Towering Inferno and Airplane. She also starredin Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance on Broadway.

McGovern’s first pop hit was “The Morning After” in1973, the theme song from The Poseidon Adventure.“Different Worlds” was released as a single onWarner/Curb in 1979 and reached number one on theAdult Contemporary chart, where it remained for twoweeks, and was Top 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Florida native Bobby Goldsboro had more than 25chart hits in the decade from 1962-1973, including“Honey” and “Watching Scotty Grow;” he also had anationally syndicated TV show from 1972-1975. “Goodbye Marie” was produced by Larry Butler, who

had produced Kenny Rogers’ hits like “The Gambler.”

The Goldsboro recording came at a time when pop artistswere finding success on the Country and AdultContemporary charts. The song “Goodbye Marie” reached the Top 20 on

both of those charts, and Curb Records later released aGreatest Hits album with Goldsboro.

The Burrito Brothers were descendents of a grouporiginally named The Flying Burrito Brothers, formed byGram Parsons and Chris Hillman in Los Angeles in 1968.Parsons and Hillman had left The Byrds to start this group, and they recruited ex-Byrd Michael Clarke as drummer. Parsons left for a solo career, Bernie Leadon left to

join The Eagles, and Hillman and Al Perkins left to joinManassas with Stephen Stills.

In 1975, “Sneaky Pete” Kleinow and Chris Ethridgere-formed the group with Joel Scott Hill – formerly withCanned Head – and fiddler Gib Gilbeau. Ethridge left in1976 and the group was led by Gilbeau and John Beland, who changed the name to The Burrito Brothers. Theyhad nine chart records on Curb, including “She BelongsTo Everyone But Me,” which reached number 16 on theCountry chart.

Billy Burnette led the band that played behind hisfather, the legendary Dorsey Burnette, in the 1970s. Afterhis father’s death in 1979, Billy began a solo career and, inthe summer of 1985, had his first chart record with “Ain’t

It Just Like Love” on Curb Records. Later, Billy Burnette played for seven years with

Fleetwood Mac and then with John Fogerty.

The Assembled Multitude was a well-known EastCoast studio group that had major hits such as “Tommy,”“Woodstock” and “Superstar.” “Chariots Of Fire” was one of their best recordings; it

was produced by Michael Lloyd for Mike Curb

Productions and arranged by John D’Andrea. The songwas the theme for the Academy Award-winning filmChariots of Fire, released in 1981 and starring IanCharleson and Ben Cross.

When Dick Whitehouse sawSawyer Brown on Star Search, heimmediately called Mike Curb. Theyagreed to sign the group, but Mikethought they were a rock n’ roll bandwhile Dick thought they would fit thecountry market. They recruited Randy Scruggs to

produce them, and his name on therecord gave the group credibility forthe country audience. “Step That Step”was Sawyer Brown’s second single andfirst number one on the Country chart.Over the next 20 years, they wouldrelease 50 chart singles for Curb, including 17 that went Top Five.

“New Orleans” was a Top 10 pop hit for Gary “U.S.”Bonds in 1960; years later, Curb Records was asked to dothe soundtrack for the film Voyage Of The Rock Aliens andMike Curb approached Neil Sedaka to record the songfor the movie.

Neil knew “U.S.” Bonds and asked him to sing thesong with him. Gary agreed to do it and the duet was aperfect fit for the movie. Curb also had success with Sedaka’s Top 40 chart

recording of “Rhythm Of The Rain.”

Jermaine Jackson was part of The Jackson 5 before hissolo career. Pia Zadora had a Billboard Top 40 hit with“The Clapping Song,” and Curb was looking for a recordfor the international market. Jermaine wanted to do a crossover record, and he

recorded the song “When The Rain Begins To Fall,”

written by Peggy March, with Pia Zadora. It sold three million records worldwide. It was a huge

international hit and in the United States reached theHot 100, the Club chart, and the Rhythm and Bluescharts in 1985.

Mike Curb had a good relationshipwith Clint Eastwood from the Kelly’s Heroesmovie, in which “Burning Bridges” by TheMike Curb Congregation was featured. T.G. Sheppard wanted to record

“Make My Day,” a song written byDewayne Blackwell. Dewayne got the ideaof “make my day” from the Eastwoodphrase made famous in the Dirty Harry

movies. Curb asked Eastwood to recordthe line “Go ahead, punk. Make my day”for the song. “Make My Day” was released in early

1984 and reached number 12 on theCountry chart before also hitting theAdult Contemporary and Hot 100 charts.T.G. Sheppard recorded 15 number

one records for Curb.

Tony Martell of CBS Records was looking for atechno/rock band, and when Mike Curb signed the groupDouble Image, Martell suggested that CBS and Curb

form a label to release the recording of “Night Pulse.” Therecord hit the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983 and remained onthe chart for several weeks.

The Dan Seals and Marie Osmond duet “Meet Me InMontana” won the Country Music Association’s VocalEvent of the Year award in 1986. The record was numberone on Billboard’s Country, Country Airplay and Country

Sales charts. Paul Davis wrote the song and also wrote“You’re Still New To Me,” which later became a number-one duet with Paul and Marie Osmond.

Marie, the only female in a family full of Osmondboys, made her country chart debut with “Paper Roses” in1973; she followed with eight more chart records before“Meet Me In Montana.”

This record was produced by Paul Worley, who alsoproduced “There’s No Stopping Your Heart” for Marieand “You’re Still New To Me” for the duo – both ofwhich were number-one records.

“It’s All Been Said Before” was written by DennisLambert and Brian Potter, co-writers with hits like “Ain’tNo Woman (Like The One I’ve Got)” for The Four Tops;“Country Boy, You’ve Got Your Feet In L.A.” for GlenCampbell; “Don’t Pull Your Love Out” for Hamilton, Joe,Frank & Reynolds, and for Glen Campbell; and “We

Built This City” for Starship. Mike Curb and Michael Lloyd produced this session

for The Supremes, the legendary Motown group who had46 chart singles – including 12 number ones – duringtheir career.

Morgan Mason was an executive with the filmcompany owned by Mike Curb and his sister, Carole.Mason was married to Belinda Carlisle, lead singer forThe Go Gos, an all-girl punk novelty act formed inHollywood in 1978. When the group broke up, Carlisle pursued a solo

career and her album Belinda debuted in 1986. Michael

Lloyd with Mike Curb Productions produced “MadAbout You,” which was released on I.R.S. Records. The single went to number three on the Hot 100 chart

in Billboard and crossed over to number 25 on the AdultContemporary chart. The album went Gold, reaching thenumber 13 position on the Pop Album chart.

Gotcha! was a 1985 film directed by Jeff Kanew andstarring Anthony Edwards, Linda Fiorentino, Jsu Garciaand Klaus Loewitsch. While working on the soundtrack,Mike Curb, Jack White and Mark Spiro decided to writea song called “Gotcha.” The song didn’t make the movie, but Anne Murray heard it and wanted to record it. Anne Murray was the first Canadian female vocalist to

earn a Gold record in the United States; her single“Snowbird” was released in the summer of 1970 and roseto number ten on the Country chart and number eight onthe Pop chart in Billboard. She was a regular on the GlenCampbell Goodtime Hour TV show during the same periodthat The Mike Curb Congregation appeared on thatprogram.

Joan Jett is one of the premier female rockers in thehistory of the genre. She grew up in Baltimore andSouthern California and received her first guitar when shewas 14. Influenced by the glitter pop music of the early

1970s from England, she led the all-female teenage groupThe Runaways before embarking on her solo career. “Gotcha Where I Want Ya” was the theme song from

the Curb soundtrack to the movie Gotcha!

“Military Drums” was a cut from the soundtrack to thefilm Gotcha! It reached number eight on the Club chartand number 33 on the Dance Sales chart in Billboard.“Machine Gun” and “So Many People” followed, and

both were Top 10 records on the Club chart; in all, Kahhas had four singles on the Dance chart for Curb Records. According to Mike Curb, “Hubert Kah was one of the

coolest acts who ever hit dance music.”
