SERVING THE COMOX VALLEY, CAMPBELL RIVER & THE NORTH ISLAND
Campbell River photographer Brian Kyle had a Sunday to remember recently when he went kayaking in the Campbell River estuary. Besides this eagle, he was able to spot purple martins making use of the next boxes placed there in an effort to restore their numbers. PORT McNEILL—Whether book reading fans who received a bonus concert or music fans who enjoyed an added book reading, there were smiles all around as the mother-daughter duo of Yvonne Maximchuk and Theda Phoenix wrapped up their Vancouver Island book and CD tour before more than two dozen fans at the local Anglican church.
The brief tour, which began in Parksville on April 25, was a somewhat impromptu collaboration the pair arranged when Maximchuk’s first book was published within days of the release of Phoenix’s debut singer-songwriter CD.
“I’d been recording the CD for the last nine or 10 months,” Phoenix said, “and it happened to come out at the same time as mom’s book. We got them back three days apart and planned the tour.”
The tour could be described as somewhat eclectic, with venues ranging from the Costco
in Courtenay to libraries, book stores, a coffee house, the U’Mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay and St. John Gualbert Church in Port McNeill.
But that clearly fits the themes of both women’s works, inspired by a lives shaped living off the grid in the remote Broughton Archipelago region of Echo Bay.
Maximchuk is best known for her paintings of B.C. coastal images.
Her first book, Drawn to Sea: Paintbrush to chainsaw — carving out a life on B.C.’s rugged Raincost, is an alternately whimsical, dramatic and inspirational tale of a young family’s move in the early 1980s from White Rock to a remote floating home without running water, electricity or a store closer than two hours away by boat.
The children Maximchuk raised there
include Phoenix, who now lives in Vancouver but whose work is
clearly inspired by her upbringing in the heart of nature.
Her new CD, Legacy, is an inspirational and uplifting collection of songs featuring Phoenix’s silky, almost ethereal vocals. Backed by recorded instrumentals, she kicked off her set in Port McNeill this month with a piece called On the Water.
“Many of the songs on the CD were inspired by my life growing up in Echo Bay,” she said in her introduction to the song. “This is my ode to life on the water.”
Phoenix actually has recorded several previous CDs.
Meant as a soothing and spiritual backdrop for meditation, yoga or general relaxation, those recordings blend her voice and ambient instrumentals with
crystals, Tibetan bowls, ocean waves and rainfall.
Legacy, which was independently produced with help from Sam Ryan, marks her first traditional singer-songwriter recording.
The women performed two sets, both split between a reading from Drawn to Sea by Maximchuk and several songs by Phoenix.
Between sets, the two women mingled with audience members and signed and sold books, CDs and other merchandise.

Ask the DentistQuestion: What is IV sedation?
If you have a question you would like
answered please email Carmen@
dogwooddental.com
Dr. Kevin Lathangue
ANSWER: Some dental of ces refer to IV sedation as “sleep dentistry” or “twilight sleep” which are both misleading - IV conscious sedation is designed to relax the patient at a light or moderate level and, in reality, you remain conscious during the procedure meaning you will understand and respond to requests from your dentist - although you may not remember because the drug typically used does two things,
1. IV sedation induces a state of deep relaxation and a feeling of not being bothered by what’s going on.2. The drugs used for IV sedation produce either partial or full memory loss (amnesia) for the period of
time when the drug rst kicks in until it wears off. As a result, time will appear to pass quickly and you will not recall much of what happened - this is likely the reason people believe they were “asleep” during the procedure.
Typically, people seek out IV sedation when they are anxious about a procedure or the needle. Although IV sedation is not a pain killer - we can use EMLA cream to prevent the needle from hurting which creates a more comfortable experience. Finally, if you are a person who has postponed your dental treatment due to fear or anxiety - this might be the perfect solution to nally get your oral health back on track. For more information you can call 250-287-7343.

Water is the most abundant, yet possibly the most overlooked, substance in the human body accounting for 45 to 60 per cent of an adult’s total body weight.
Water is essential for many bodily processes.
It is used to provide lubrication for joints, transport nutrients to the cells, get rid of unwanted waste, and most importantly keep us cool when the temperature rises.
Of course, running all of these systems takes a constant supply of water that needs to be replaced on a daily basis.
For an average adult, water loss during a typical day can be up to 2.5 litres.
In order to maintain the fluid balance within the body, water gain needs to equal water loss.
In other words, any water lost by sweating, or urinating, needs to be
replaced by eating food, or drinking liquids.
During exercise, water loss increases rapidly. Sweat production is increased to keep the body temperature down, and the breathing rate increases to supply oxygen to the muscles. This results in greater water loss from the lungs.
During heavy workouts, water can be lost at a rate of up to four litres per hour. Loss of too much water from the body results in dehydration.
Dehydration reduces the volume of blood in the body, and makes the heart work harder to pump the blood around the body and deliver oxygen to the muscles.
Exercise is hard enough when you are properly hydrated, never mind when the body’s
systems aren’t working as efficiently because of lack of water.
A five per cent reduction in body weight due to dehydration can result in a 30 per cent
drop in exercise performance.
Nausea and vomiting may be experienced as dehydration progresses and fluid loss greater than five per cent creates weakness, confusion, and
dizziness, and can lead ultimately to coma and death.
The moral of the story: remember to drink while exercising.
It is easy to tell when you need to water your plants.
They droop. It is not so easy to
know when to water yourself. The simple answer is to drink as much as your body tells you to.
This issue is a controversial one and there is a great deal of conflicting information on it.
However, if you obey your thirst and drink only when thirsty, then you will be safe and it should not affect your performance at all.
It is better not to force yourself to drink too often. In most situations you can listen to your body and you should be fine.
If you have trouble hearing what your body is telling you, drink somewhere between 400 to 1,000 millilitres per hour while you are exercising.
Are sports drinks necessary for re-hydration?
Sports drinks can be helpful to athletes who are exercising at a high intensity for 60 minutes or more, but it’s really not necessary to replace losses of sodium, potassium and
other electrolytes during exercise since you’re unlikely to deplete your body’s stores of these minerals during normal training.
For most of us, water works perfectly well for restoring water balance to the body, and it is certainly a lot easier on the wallet.
No reason to see a physiotherapist this time, but I hope you enjoyed the article. Have fun. Drink lots (of water).

email: [email protected] This year in the month of May, shing the local lakes has been described as improving by many anglers. The public boat launches in Campbell River are quite active as the weather turned for the better and anglers were getting out.Shelter Point is an area that the boats are heading to. At Discovery Marina last week an angler coming back from shing hooked into a 21 pounder. The winter springs are being caught at Kitty Coleman and Bates Beach and the sh size goes anywhere from 9 to 19 pounds. Anglers have also had good catches of salmon on the south end of Denman Island and at Deep Bay. Some nice trout have been caught at Roberts Lake, trolling along the east side of the lake. This lake is hard to sh at times because of the wind and guys getting out are trolling deep to get to the big ones. If you’re shing north of Campbell River try Stella Lake, which is located on the Elk Main logging road close to 20 kms off the main highway, this road is rough most of the time and is well used in summer. Signs are posted along the way and Stella Lake will be a good destination to try shing in weeks to come. If you know a member of the Courtenay Fish and Game association, a great spot to get the kids shing is the stocked pond located near the clubhouse. This pond is stocked with sh and is easy access for all to enjoy a day out shing, the pond is also wheelchair accessible. In Campbell River the Quinsam River has been very good for trout. For y shing this river is a nice spot to get out and sh the pools.

I’ve often overheard patients asking my office assistants questions like, “He’s recommended a crown for my tooth, but my dental plan only covers fillings. Can’t he just put a filling in my tooth?” Not really.
First of all, there are a few ways to repair a damaged tooth. A filling simply fills in a cavity with a hard, durable, plastic material. A crown is a porcelain, ceramic or metal “cap” that is custom-made to cover a badly damaged tooth, and an onlay is halfway between the two – it’s used when damage has
been done to one or more of a tooth’s cusps.
A filling is only effective to repair a tooth if less than 50 per cent of the tooth is damaged or missing. If more that 50 per cent of the tooth is gone, a filling is quite susceptible to breakage and can’t always withstand the forces of chewing. This in turn makes the tooth prone to fractures, and a fractured tooth is much more difficult to repair.
That’s why, in
cases where more than 50 per cent of the tooth is damaged, I will recommend fully encapsulating the chewing surface of the
tooth with a crown or onlay. These restorations drastically reduce the chances of a fracture, preventing the need for more invasive treatment like
root canals or – worse – extraction of the tooth.
Replacing a missing tooth is far more
expensive than restoring it, and fixing tooth decay while it’s still very small is, in turn, less expensive than fixing large areas of decay. Least expensive of all, of course, is prevention; intercepting the problems before they start. (You can see diagrams of crowns and onlays at www.beyondbeautifulsmiles.ca under the “services” tab).

lsland readers love their local newspaper
Teresa BirdBlack Press
Are small town newspapers a good business investment? In light of today’s technology many people believe newspapers are dying, but David Black, owner of Black Press and the
Midweek doesn’t agree when it comes to community news-papers.
“I think that week-ly newspapers are good business,” says Black. “I don’t see the internet threat-ening that.”
Black knows what he is talking about. He got his start in the newspaper busi-ness humbly enough when he bought the Williams Lake Tribune in 1975 from the owners, one of whom was his father.
“I never intended to be a newspaper-
man, I studied engineer-
ing and took
my MBA,” says Black. “I ended up as a inan-cial analyst for the Toronto Star for a couple of years and started to like the (newspaper) business. I particularly liked the weeklies.”
When his father told him that the Tribune was being sold, Black asked if he could buy it.
“He just laughed and said, ‘Why do you think I told you?’” recalls Black fondly. The young Black family moved to Williams Lake “for a couple of years” but “fell in love with small town living” and stayed for a decade.
While there Black learned the business at the grassroots level.
“I learned a lot about the weekly newspa-per business,” says Black. “When somebody left, whether it was an editor or a compositor or a sales rep or a circulation manager or … I ended up doing the job until we found a replacement. I really helped me the rest of my career because I actually know what it take to do the job.”
And from Williams Lake, Black began to expand his career and business. In 1980 he purchased the Ashcroft Journal (now the Ash-croft Cache Creek Journal).
Today David Black lives in Victoria and Black Press includes more than 190 publica-tions, in B.C., the Prairies, Washington State and a daily in both Hawaii and Akron, Ohio.
So why has Black Press been so successful? “I understand business, I have a head for
business. But the trick is people. If you can surround yourself with people who are really good, you will succeed,” explains Black. “We have really good staff.”
And that is part of the reason why commu-nity newspapers aren’t as threatened by the internet, say Black.
“We are putting out as good a local paper as we can afford editorially. It shows in the numerous awards we receive every year and our readership.” says Black. “I think weeklies will continue very much the same, I don’t see huge changes in towns the size of Courtenay/
