T here was a novelist Nagai 1 Kafu (1879-1959) who was
stubborn, remained aloof from others, hated violent moderniza¬ tion, loathed militarism, and loved old Japan. Recently, I found his memorial that was shaped like TATOU (a kind of origami pack¬ age). He walked around Tokyo and Chiba, and saw phantoms of pre-modern towns. I described this article in traditional Japanese style as a dedication to him.

Shizuoka Cicada
Designed by Robert J. bang Copyright ©2004. All Rights Re served.
□A—h ■ j -
Translated by Tateishi Koichi/SIR ’ il-HltS—
I have a\ways loved die cicada insect. One of my fond
memories of growing up in Georgia was collecting the
cicada shells from the trees around our house, (We don't
have them where I live in California.) The cicada was also
a model I attempted to fold in origami from a very young
age, but perhaps because f like die subject so much* 1 urn
very critical of each one 1 fold* I have designed several;
each time coming closer, I hope, to capturing the essenceof
the subject-
This newest one is titled "Shizuoka Cicada, opus 445T I
named it"Shizucka Cicada" because I was inspired to fold
ii from examining the cicadas on the trees when we visited
Shizuoka during the excursion after the Tanteidan convention*
Opus 445 means it’s my 445th diagrammed design.
One of the challenges in doing the the same subject multiple
limes is that the structure of each design must be quite
different if I want the model to look different. In some of
my previous designs, J attempted to emphasize the eyes,
but after looking at the real insects in Shizuoka, I realized
that 1 didn't have the proportions of the body right in my
previous work, and all ihc effort on the eyes was wasted* I
also realized that the body of a cicada is qui te solid and 1
felt that my previous designs did not convey that solidity.
While 1 have done insects that are round on the tops of
their bodies. J wanted to make a cicada that was round on
the underside as well, to give it a more solid body. So 1
developed this design in which the layers Lhai carry the
legs wrap around from top to bottom, giving a cross section
that is round on hii1h top and bo11oin.
Another difference from my previous cicadas is that ibis
model is not made from a uniaxial base, I have described
the theory of uniaxial bases in nty book. Origami Design
Secrets. (Of course, readers of Origami Duneidan Magazine
are familiar with many of the concepts of uniaxial bases
biu with different names, because several Japanese folders
discovered die same concepts and have described them
over the years,) While I continue to work on the models
and theory of uniaxial bases, 1 am most interested in my
designing in moving away from purely uniaxial bases and
instead constructing hybrids of uniaxial bases combined
with other techniques.

Fuse Tomoko: Thoki liked his pseudonym in Japanese Tokj £>rrToki (=Japanesecrested ibis) Garden)" (he h:d his deep interest in haiku), Thoki not only folded paper but he WEkS also a kiriganii f= cutting paper) and pantomime master J never fofget his act im- pmmptu sviih John Smith, in which a sheet of pa¬ per became birds, waves, penguins, sky, and pro¬ duce tunes. Thoki was a folder but he was be¬ yond that. No one can deny that he was always at the center ot lolders'scircle. Good bye and so long, Thoki-son.
Biddle Megunu:
Thoki's interests are not only in origami, but he was famous ;tnd active in paper animated cartoons and magic, loo. But, he was most interested in watching people, and his critical eyes sometimes surprised triers. 1 lira mcl him 15 years ago at live BOS Convention, His superb kifigami perfor¬ mances "captivated^ me. Since then, we visited each other so often in UK and Denmark and had so many fun times with origami, magic, and kirigami.
Thoki’s famous eccentricity can be exemplified with tf>e fact that he was imprisoned in Germany- occupied Denmark in the WWIJ days as he made satirical cartoons about Hitler.
Recently, Thoki lud been so ill that he quit join¬ ing origami conventions worldwide and running Origami Denmark, He lived his proud life in a home l or the aged, f will never abandon the an of kirigami that he taught me,
Ynniagurhi Mnkiitu:
J once had a chance to be on TV w ith Thoki- san. It was just about w hen the Gulf War broke out. In that program, we had done some origami performances m front of Danish people and the program experimented with how they react to the art of paper folding, l really had fun. as 1 lived in Denmark when I W'as young.
We also folded a huge dinosaur to get her out of a 6.5m x 6.5tn sheet of paper. The fold¬ ing process was like wrestling with paper.

The number of subscribers has
decreased a little in our 14th year, as
much as the number of JO AS members.
We are receiving more applications
through internet, but we need to have
at the same place. As this is our IOth

The conventions in other areas of Japan
(Kansai (Spring) and Shizuoka
(Autumn)) are also to be held as usual.
We hereby thank the local organizers for
their efforts.

2) The Yoshino Issei Fund
We appreciate your contribution to
the Yoshino Issei Fund for the year 2003.
In the year 2003, we invited Robert Lang
and Jean Baden-Gillette to the 9th
Origami Tanteidan Convention with the
fund. The year 2004 is the Convention's
10th year, so we are planning inviting
four from abroad (of which one is an
open invitation). As for the travel fund
for our Japanese members, there were
no applications in 2003. We can aid one
or two prospective folders going abroad
for origami studies. Contact the JOAS
secretary for application.

2 Origami Classes This year, we have more than 20 classrooms
which can hold Origami classes at the same time. We are sure that you can enjoy folding origami models of various types and difficulties. 3 Origami Counseling Talk with our origami counselors on various
issues about origami. Anyone is invited to show their problems and share them with others. 4 Party! We will have a party this year IN Toyo Uni¬
versity. No need to walk far down south or take a subway.
August 22 (Sun.) 1 Origami Classes throughout the day 2 Auction Various origami goods and books are about to
be up. Join us, or you miss something.
Instructors Sought For! As this year's convention is bigger in size, we
need more origami class instructors than usual. The model to teach need not be your original,

so anyone is welcomed. JOAS will help you to clear the copyright issues, if you are to teach a model created by someone else.
"Origami Instructor" to Be Licensed Starting from April, 2004, JOAS will license
the "Origami Instructors", who are skilled at teaching origami models. To become an Origami Instructor, you need to teach a class in one of the three Tanteidan Conventions (Tokyo, Kansai, and Shizuoka), and your class will be screened by a JOAS board member. If you pass the screening process, you are licensed, and you will receive a right to teach some copyrighted models published in our magazines (the list will be given to the awardees), until the end of the Instructors' term.
Volunteers Needed! We need more volunteers than usual, as the
size of the convention will be huge! For those who can handly both Japanese and English flu¬ ently, the interpreter’s job will be best fit. In particular, we seek for an interpreter or two who can do interpreting mathematical concepts used for origami.
Of course, we need voluntary workers in other

aspects of the convention. So, please tell us if you are willing to help us!
Origami Yokai Contest Welcomes Brand-New Models The contestants should submit their origami
models of yokai, a category of monstrous be¬ ings which include goblins, vampires, (perhaps) Frankenstein's monster and Medusa but ex¬ cludes some of ghosts (like Casper), fairies and Godzilla.
Confused? Don't worry. Even Japanese are not sure whether ogres are yokai or not. The submitted models should not be yet publicized in any forms. The models are examined by three groups of people: Mizuki Shigeru, the master of yokai cartoons, who will give the Mizuki Award, Toyo University professors, who will give the Inoue Enryo Award (Inoue Enryo was the founder of Toyo University and he studied yokai), and the JOAS board members, who will give the Tanteidan Award. The awarded mod¬ els and some of the others submitted will be exhibited at the Convention Site. Details will be in the Origami Tanteidan website.
