WHY WOULD GOD ASK THAT??

The Binding of Isaac is one of the most difficult passages in the Bible. Even though God intervenes to save Isaac, the whole episode strikes some readers as cruel. However, Abraham, the ultimate man of faith, raises no objection; he simply goes about preparing for the trip and the sacrifice.

The reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans is short but rich in meaning. When Paul declares that God “did not spare his own Son,” and when God praises Abraham “who did not withhold from me your own beloved son,” it is the same Greek word for “spare” and “withhold.” God’s voice at the Transfiguration identifies Jesus as his “beloved Son”—the same way God refers to Isaac as Abraham’s beloved son.

Ultimately, God spares Isaac but not his own Son, whom he “handed over for us.” Even if we are disturbed that God tested Abraham like this, Paul says we should be overwhelmingly grateful that God did for us what, in the end, he did not require of Abraham. Jesus, God’s Son “handed over to us” in love and generosity, is already a sacrificial gift, signifying that God wants to give us “everything else along with him.”

My friends in Christ:

Year of Saint Joseph December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021

On the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (December 8, 2020), Pope Francis issued an Apostolic Letter, Patris Corde (“With a Father’s Heart”) to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Proclamation of St. Joseph as the Patron of the Universal Church. Within the letter, Pope Francis proclaimed a “Year of St. Joseph” from 12/8/20 to 12/8/21. The “Year of St. Joseph” invites all Catholics around the world to recognize the unique role of St. Joseph as Patron and Protector of the Universal Church, to increase our love and devotion for this great Saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession, and to imitate his virtues and zeal. In addition, Pope Francis announced the possibility and manner of obtaining indulgences during this special year. Every parish, institution, school, PREP program, and religious community is asked by Archbishop Perez to plan spiritual and pastoral opportunities for their parish communities to highlight and engage our people in devotions to St. Joseph. The following are some of the programs and activities that we will offer throughout the “Year of St. Joseph”:

∗ Priests and Deacons will devote occasional homilies about the life, virtues, and special role that St. Joseph plays in our salvation history

∗ Men and Women’s prayer groups will offer a 33 Day Consecration to St. Joseph (running from March 30 to May 1st, the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker)

∗ Our parish and our families will be consecrated to St. Joseph the weekend of May 1-2 ∗ Special Masses will be dedicated to St. Joseph on March 19th (Solemnity of St. Joseph) and May 1st (Feast of

St. Joseph the Worker) ∗ A special hymn to St. Joseph will be prepared, to be used at Masses throughout the year St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, pray for us.

God bless! Monsignor Francis W. Beach, Pastor

A Family Consecration to Saint Joseph

Dear Saint Joseph,

I consecrate my family to your honor and give my family to your loving care, that you may always be our father, our protector, and our guide in the way of salvation.

Obtain for us a sincere purity of heart and a fervent love for the spiritual life.

After your example, may we do everything for the greater glory of God in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

O Blessed Joseph, please pray for my family that we may share in the peace and joy of a holy death. Amen.

A Child’s Prayer to Saint Joseph

St. Joseph,

Watch over me and care for me just as you cared for the Child Jesus, and by your help, may I come to know your Son, and so grow in strength and wisdom and the favor of God. Amen.

Ask Your Representatives to Vote NO on the misnamed “Equality Act!”

This week the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on “The Equality Act.”

While everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, this act would actually discriminate against girls and women, the unborn, the faithful, and many groups in our society.

Go to our website, stjudechalfont.org, and scroll down to the News Items. There you can click to go directly to a page at the USCCB where you can learn more and easily send a message to your representa-tives to protect true equality for all by voting NO to the “Equality Act”!

St. Vincent de Paul Society assists our neighbors who have urgent financial need. If you know of any local individuals who require assistance, regardless of their religion, please leave a message at 267-903-4884. Someone will return the call within 24 hrs.

February 28, 2021 2nd Reading – Rom 8:31b-34 Brothers and sisters: If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us, who will condemn? Christ Jesus it is who died—or, rather, was raised—who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Gospel – Mk 9:2-10 Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.

As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

Key Mass Prayers Penitential Act I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Profession of Faith (The Creed) I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

1st Reading – Gn 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18 God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am!” he replied. Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you.”

When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD’s messenger called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am!” he answered. “Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.” As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.

Again the LORD’s messenger called to Abraham from heaven and said: “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing—all this because you obeyed my command.” Responsorial Psalm

R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
