~ Chapter President’s Message ~ Michael P. Smith, CSI, CCCA, LEED AP, EDAC
"During the past year, I've had the opportunity to sit down for coffee or
lunch with Trusted Advisors, Building Information Managers, and
specification writers to discuss what they feel CSI needs to offer locally to be
successful as an organization.
Although our conversations emphasized increasing membership and
awareness of our youthful members, we've focused much of our conversation
on the need for CSI to continue providing quality education and networking
opportunities for all our members. In each of these conversations, we had the chance to
brainstorm ideas that will bring more value to our membership and potentially add new members
as well.
We are a volunteer organization and in order to have future leaders that continue to bring
positive change to the industry--WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
Moving forward, my most important job as President is going to be getting our members
involved. There's more excitement to be had than simply sending in one's dues and adding CSI to
our business cards, or having a networking event without having our newest members attend.
We're looking for our members to step up and become committee leaders and people to assist
as committee doers. It's what makes a volunteer organization like the Greater Orlando Chapter
of CSI successful....or not. If you are interested in assisting your Chapter in any way, please
contact myself or any Board Member and we will be sure to contact you, and keep you engaged.”

THOUGHT for the month – “Perhaps a man really dies when his brain stops,
when he loses the power to take in a new idea.” George Orwell
IT’S A SURE THING THAT YOU’LL NOT FINISH IF YOU DON’T START. An ancient proverb says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” You have probably
known people nearing the end of their life’s journey who looked back and said, “If only I had done things
differently…. If only I had taken advantage of that opportunity when it came along.” Unfulfilled lives
are filled with “if onlys.” They are the refrain of the timid souls whose lives were finished before they
ever really got started. Life is filled with many opportunities — for great successes and spectacular
failures. It is up to you to seize the initiative, to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.
You are condemned to a life of mediocrity — unless you get into action. Don’t delay; do it today! NAPOLEON HILL FOUNDATION

CERTIFICATION
“Readiness is the mother of luck.” Baltasar Gracian, writer
CDT AS CERTIFICATION TRANSITION – Supporting professional success is CSI’s primary
reason for being, and the CDT credential is an important professional accomplishment. We are writing
about some changes to the CDT that will increase the value of this credential to holders and to the
industry. CSI has embarked upon a strategy to transition the CDT to a certification. This transition has
been in the works for at least three years, prompted by CSI volunteer leadership serving on the
Certification committee and the CSI Board of Directors. The change to the CDT will take effect on July
1, 2018.

A BETTER WORK CULTURE STARTS WITH 2 WORDS – Saying "thank you," whether privately

COURT TO DECIDE WHETHER FDOT MUST RELEASE FIU DOCUMENTS
The Florida Department of Transportation has not produced documents that originated after
Feb. 19 related to a Florida International University pedestrian bridge collapse in March because
the National Transportation Safety Board said such records are protected under agency
regulations. If NTSB doesn't join FDOT or file a brief in a lawsuit over the public release of the
documents, the Leon County Circuit Court will rule on their release. Roads & Bridges online

member of both the GO chapter since January and the Tampa chapter of CSI.
He said, “I joined CSI to network and meet industry peers as well as participate in
educational opportunities.” He has lived in the Tampa Bay area for most of his
life, “and when not working. I enjoy boating, traveling, camping and plenty of good
laughs with family and friends.” Rodney said he, “will become more involved with the CSI chapters as
I become more comfortable with my position at ATAS and look forward to attending social events and
chapter meetings in Orlando as much as possible.” Mihaela Dumtrescu - 7/10/18 Krista Hall – 6/24/18 Jim Hurley – 5/28/18 Don Miller – 5/14/18

NEW COLUMN PROPOSED – “A/E Member Spotlight” where the Member would tell a bit about themselves, their firm, how manufacturers can work better with their firm, etc... Obviously needed, at least to the editor, is participation by the chapter A/E members. As soon as the editor receives submissions, the column will become a reality. You want it, you got it, but your involvement is essential.
THE VALUE OF MEMBERSHIP –
“I can only speak to my individual experience as I have always said the CSI experience is not at the
surface level but very deep depending on what one wishes to get out of it. For me, as a product rep,
there was no formal school training like architecture or engineering. So, as I have always said, CSI has
taught me the language of construction. At 75c per day this is minimal in the world of education. Our
collaborative model has been an invaluable learning tool for me as I have progressed in my career. For
me, I can honestly say that I have gotten a lot more out of CSI than what I have put in. I do hope your
colleague will join us and have an equally impressive journey as me. Thank You for all your support of CSI!” William Sundquist, CSI, Institute Director FY' 19 – 21, Southwest Regional Sales Manager Whitacre Greer Co.
"MEMBER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES." At chapter meetings, please sign up to be a door greeter, photographer, or event recap article writer. More than one door greeter can be fun as you can also socialize as people come in. It is best if the volunteers are members outside our board and committees who are signing up for these opportunities. Idea provided by: Beth Winkler, CSI Chicago
PLEASE KEEP YOUR BOARD INFORMED – Contact any Board member to help your colleagues celebrate life's joys and support them during life's challenges.

WHAT PROGRAMS ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU? The best ideas for programs come from the needs of members, and some are very focused and local. Do you have a suggestion for a topic you would like to see covered, and can you jot down a few ideas why and how they would be of benefit? Your board is here to help our members and education is one key point addressed in various ways, one being the programs we schedule during meeting, and in some cases, on an expanded session. Drop us a note with your thoughts... we'd sure be grateful for that!
