PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger
BOOK WEEK
Last week we celebrated Book Week at Barton Primary School. On Thursday our students dressed up as their favourite book characters and donated a book to our library. We saw a range of different characters at the parade including the BFG, the Cat in the Hat, Superheros, wizards and a few Disney Princess’. We also had a few Wally’s make an appearance. I was very proud of how many stu-dents donated books towards our growing Library.

FATHERS DAY BREAKFAST
Parents and students are invited to our Fathers Day Breakfast this Friday 30th August 8am—8.45am in the Stadium. Pikelets, Tea and Coffee will be provided. We hope to see you all there to celebrate
BASKETBALL COURTS RECTIFICATION
Our basketball courts are in the process of being improved. A temporary fence has been put up around the basketball courts and will remain there for a couple of months while the surface is re-paired and resealed. Once this process is complete the fence will be taken down and our students can continue to utilise this facility.
RELOCATABLE CLASSROOMS
Our new relocatable classrooms are scheduled to arrive in the next 2 weeks. You will notice some temporary fencing going up in preparation for this. These will be the same modular buildings as we currently have and ill cater for our growing numbers in 2020.
PREP NEWS
Reading
In Reading we have learnt about digraphs within our new words of the week ‘teacher’ and ‘feather.’ We have been focusing on rhyming words and using the reading strategy ‘Skippy Frog’. Skippy Frog teaches us to skip a tricky word and read the rest of the sentence before determining the missing word and then rereading the sentence.
Writing
We have been learning about procedural writing. During our writing workshops we have been making crafts and writing the steps to create our crafts.
Numeracy
In Maths we have been learning about addition and have begun our unit on subtraction. We have also explored location. We listen to, give and follow instructions using positional language words such as near, far, under, over, next to, behind, in front, forwards and backwards.
Inquiry
We have continued to learn about different animals on the farm. We are working on developing our questioning skills by using words such as who, what, when, where, why and how to start our ques-tions.
PREP NEWS
Book Week
Each of the Prep Grades have joined forces with another Grade within the school to explore the book ‘Wombat Stew’ for Book Week. With this Grade we created new characters and wrote our own page of the story. Well done to all the students who got involved with our Book Week Parade dressing up as a book character.
Reminders!
Please don’t forget to read every night.
Please log onto online programs such as Reading Eggs, Bug Club and Mathletics.
We are also collecting the Coles Little Shop for our unit on money and would gratefully accept any donations of extra minis that you may have.
GRADE 1 NEWS
Mathematics News—Location
The Grade 1 students have been learning about location in Mathematics. Location is a part of the Measurement & Geometry strand of the Mathematics Curriculum.
They have been using vocabulary that describes the position of objects. Additionally, they are re-quired to follow and give instructions to and from a place that involves turns, direction and distances.
Here are some examples of the vocabulary they have been exposed to:
Jade is standing outside and Jetta is standing inside the learning hub.
Gursirat is standing near and Isabelle is standing far.
Manya is in between Murtaza and Janica. Murtaza is on the left, Manya is in the middle and Janica is on the right in the photo.
Zachary is standing behind Kon and Cooper is standing in front of Kon.
Prerita is sitting on top of the table and Binyamin is under the table.
GRADE 2 NEWS
Maths: Half and Quarter turns.
The Grade 2’s have been learning about half and quarter turns in Maths. We used our bodies to show quarter and half turns. We also hid an object in the classroom and used the language of quarter and half turns to direct someone to find the mys-tery object.
Reading: Book Week.
The Grade 2’s had the opportunity to buddy up with another grade and read the story ‘Wombat Stew’. Together they looked at describing words and got to act out the story. Then they wrote their own episode of the story and drew pictures to match.
GRADE 3 - 6 NEWS
Science
In the 3-6 cohort, we have been learning all about all things Physical Science such as energy, light, refraction and electricity. We have been lucky to engage in a range
of experiments such as water refraction and working
with circuits.
Athletics
On Wednesday 21st, we had a huge number of Barton stu- dents represent our school at the District Athletics. The students trained hard for the completion and gave it their all. Congratulations to the students who participated in District Athletics.
Book Week
What a week! The 3-6 grades have found a buddy grade throughout the school and worked with them to create an episode for the book Wombat Stew. The students were able to learn from other peers by reading, writing and creating together.
We also got to celebrate Book Week by dressing up as characters from our favorite books. The 3-6 teachers also got involved with the dress ups, can you find Wally?
Have a look at some of our costumes.

PERFORMING ART
We have had a very busy couple of weeks in Music! Our students have been learning about a lot of different concepts and ideas.
Prep students have begun to learn about dynamics in music, using proper musical words like pi-ano and forte to describe soft and loud sounds.
Year 1 & 2 students have been learning about different melodic elements each week and talking about how they are all related and how they all help to create interesting music to listen to. We had a lot of fun singing and playing the Grizzly Bear song and game to learn about crescendos and decrescendos. We even had a go at improvising using the pentatonic scale on xylophones!
We have concluded our recorder unit with Year 3/4 students—they have completed an assess-ment task this week, and realised just how much they’ve learnt so far this term! We have covered topics like blues music, major and minor melodies, and the difference between harmony and chords. We have an exciting last few weeks of this term planned where students will have the op-portunity to use their favourite song to investigate different aspects of music!
Students in Year 5/6 have started composing their jingle for their commercials. They have been using the iPads in Music to create their own backing music using an online tool. Their next step is to write the lyrics for their jingle, and record their completed jingle together. We will have a few groups perform their commercial at assembly in the coming weeks, and we can’t wait to share them with you!

CODING CLUB
Since the 13th of August Coding Club has been running. In Coding Club we have been learning how to use the new Sphero Bolt ro-bots. This week we were trying to make different matrix/animations on the Sphero Bolts. So far, we have seen a lot of peo-ple contributing in groups to create codes for the robot to follow. If you wish to participate in Coding Club and you are in grade 3-6 you can come to the 3/4 Hub every Tuesday at the start of lunch.

ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES Miss Dunstan & Mrs Krejic
It has been a sensationally busy few weeks in Enviro!! We have begun planting seeds this week, which has been very exciting. Students in Prep and Grade 2 have planted Spinach seeds. Students in
Grade 1 have planted bean seeds and Students in Grade 5 have begun planting spinach, lettuce, cauliflower and beetroot in our vegetable garden. Grade 6 students are working on environmental ac-
tion plans to improve our community.
Grade 2 students have been working on creating ecosystem posters. They presented their eco-systems to some parents for our open morning. Maybe teaching the grown ups a few things too.
Miss Dunstan’s Question Corner
While walking on the beach at 5/6 Camp Miss Peters got to thinking… Where do all the shells come from, how do they get to the beach?
Great question Miss Peters! Let’s start by explaining what a shell is, which is tricky. Most seashells are actually protective outer coverings of marine ani-mals. Most shells you see on the beach do not have a living organism attached anymore, but some do. Seashells come from mollusks including clams, mussels and oysters that use the tough outer surface to protect them-selves. When the animal dies the outer shell remains. The older the animal gets the larger, and stronger the shell becomes. Shells are unique, and spe-cific to the species they belong to.
How they arrive on the beach is due to ocean currents. The currents flow all around the world, and depending on where the animal lives and dies, and how the ocean current is moving will determine where they get washed up on the shore. Because beaches change every day as the tide changes it is un-likely you will ever see the same shell again in the same place. Shells are an important part of the environment and you should never remove them. They provide homes for creatures, are used to create nests, and when shells break down they provide nutrients back to the ocean for marine animals to eat.
ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES
Grade 2 Southern Brown Bandicoot Incursion
The Grade 2 students were fortunate to have a guest speaker for their incursion on Wednesday the 14th of August. Charlotte Fletcher is one of the Rangers at the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens and her role is to educate local schools and the community about the Bandicoot, and how we can pro-
tect this endangered Australian animal.
Students played a game called “rat or bandicoot” and students had to decide if the picture shown was a rat or a bandicoot. Students now know the difference between the two. A bandicoot has a big
bottom and a short tail, a rat has a long tail but a little bottom.
Students will continue their research on native animals over the next few weeks, and will be working on an artwork to display at the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens at the end of the term.
