PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger
END OF YEAR CONCERT
What a fantastic community event this was. Thank you to all of our students, par-ents and families for attending and participating so enthusiastically in this event. It certainly ensured that it was a fun event for everyone. The staff and I really appreciated the parents who went out of their way to thank us and to pass on their very positive feedback. This means a lot to us as a fair amount of organisa-tion goes into creating the event and to have our efforts appreciated so warmly, is gratifying. Having the picnic beforehand, apart from giving the fish and chip shop their best takings for the year, also provided a real opportunity for our teachers to have a relaxed chat with many of their students and their families. I would like to thank all of our staff for their work in making the event so successful, in particular our Administration team who went over and above with most of the running around behind the scenes. Alicia Wallwork our current Music Specialist Teacher did a great job of coordinating and stage managing the event – she was the one who made sure I ran to time! Our leadership team also assisted greatly in setting up and packing up in particular Assistant Principal Gavan Hughes who gave me a hand doing the final pack up. One of the key pillars of our school is community. This was clearly evident with over 2000 people in attendance. What a great way to celebrate the end of the year seeing our stu-dents perform so confidently! We love our school!!

STATEWIDE TRANSITION DAY & GRADE PLACEMENT 2020
Last Tuesday our Grade 6 students attended their secondary school for their Orientation pro-gram. On the same day we conducted our final prep 2020 transition session and also our Step Up program where all of the students had a learning experience in their 2020 learning hub. Most of our new teachers for 2020 were in attendance including our two newly appointed Assistant Principals. This gave our students a good chance to meet them and to establish that very im-portant positive learning relationship. In addition our new staff were able to meet with the current staff at a handover meeting where the learning needs of each child is discussed and analysed in detail.
The teaching staff and leadership team have been working on the grade lists for some time. A lot of discussion and thought goes into the placement of each student as we endeavour to have a balance of learning needs across all grades at that level. As parents would be aware, our stu-dents interact with all students in their learning hub through the course of a day therefore parent requests for grade placement are only considered if there is a specific learning need of which there is clear evidence and we have received this request well in advance of the lists being com-piled ie early term 4. As mentioned in the email sent home earlier this week we will be informing parents of their child’s grade group and teacher via a note home on Friday. In addition we will publish an additional newsletter on Friday 20th December (last day of term) which will have all of the teachers and their various teaching roles.
GRADE 5 CAMP 2020
Today a note was emailed to all of our 2020 Grade 5 parents giving advance notice of the Grade 5 camp to Stringybark Lodge in Gembrook. A school camp is a very important part of our curricu-lum for all students and provides a realistic opportunity to challenge and develop those very im-portant skills and general capabilities such as resilience and determination. Parents need to be aware that the cost of the camp is around $300 and the request for payment will occur very early in the new school year.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
The School Council meets once a month on a Thursday afternoon between 2pm and 3.15pm. There are 12 School Councillors and each of them is also on one of the Sub-Committees (which are Community, Finance and Education). At School Council we discuss many of the policies and directions that we want for the school to move forward. At yesterday’s School Council we reflect-ed on 2019 and how successful a year it was. We talked about our community events such as Open Days, the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day breakfasts and how successful they are as com-munity events. In particular we highlighted the very successful End of Year Celebration held on Wednesday night and acknowledged all of the work of the teachers and administration team in putting together such a wonderful show. Other agenda items included a report from our SRC stu-dents, a finance report, staffing for 2020, Grade 6 Graduation, Facilities report and the school re-view. We also talked about how financially secure we are as a School and how we are looking forward to the growth and expansion we are anticipating in the next couple of years, in particular 2020. One of the key items we discussed was the results of the canteen survey. As you can see from the staffing profile in this newsletter we are certainly growing as a school.
School Council is a great opportunity for parents to get involved in the school. We hold elections in Term 1 each year and will communicate when we would like parents to put forward their ex-pression of interest and nominations. If you would like to know more about School Council please visit the Department of Education website.

Statewide Transition Day took place this week on Tuesday and provided students with the opportunity to work in their 2020 grade level for part of the day and meet some of our new teachers for next year.
It was great to see students embrace the all that was involved with step-ping up to next year’s grade level and this resulted in a very positive day. A reminder that the groups that students worked in on this day were not an indication of the home group or teachers that students will be working with next year. We have been undertaking the process of allocating home groups for a large part of Term 4 with the allo-cations nearing finalisation. The process has involved our teaching teams working together to de-velop home groups that take account of the specific learning needs of each individual student. Students, parents and guardians will be notified of grade allocations on the last day of school.
Earlier this term I commented how impressed I was by students’ focus on learning and the strong team approach staff take to supporting students with their learning. This has continued to be rein-forced throughout the term as students and teachers work in partnership to enable students to achieve their learning goals. Student commitment to learning was also reflected in the student reports that I read and I congratulate all students on their achievements in 2019.
With just one week of the school year remaining I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing break. I particularly would like to wish our departing students all the best for their future. I look for-ward to 2020 at Barton Primary School.

PREP NEWS
Literacy
In Reading we have been exploring non-fiction texts and how they are set out. Non-fiction texts are books which may include a contents page, glossary, dia-grams, photographs and captions. In Writing we have continued to explore re-counts and acrostic poems.
Maths
In Maths we have been using calculators. We have been able to find and make numbers on our calculators. Also we have completed some addition and sub-traction sums on our calculators to find the answer.
Inquiry
Throughout Inquiry we have learnt about different holidays from around the world. Recently we discussed Diwali the festival of lights.
Science
In Science we have been exploring living and non-living things. We determined what animals need to survive including shelter, food and water. We worked in small groups to design and build our own habitats for an animal of our choice.
PREP NEWS
Step Up Transition Day
On Tuesday we completed our Step Up Program where we were able to move up to Grade One and participate in some fun games and activities. The Prep students really enjoyed this experience. Lachlan said “I liked drawing a superhero”. Chloe said “I liked that I got to be with friends”. Neo said “I liked drawing a superhero”. Lila said “I liked playing games”.
We would like to thank you all for a wonderful year in Prep. We are so proud of how much learning growth our students have achieved over the past year.
Sadly we would also like to farewell two Teachers from our Prep Team, Bronte Wills and Jarryd Foster, who will be leaving to help open a new school in 2020. We appreciate all of their hard work in the Prep Team and we wish them all the best on their new adventures.

GRADE 1 NEWS
COAL CREEK EXCURSION
For Inquiry this term, the Grade 1 students have been learn-ing about History. Last week we went on an excursion to Coal Creek to learn more about the past and what life was like in the olden days. Students went on a tour around Coal Creek. They saw an old hairdressers, a bootmaker shop, an old house and the general store.
GRADE 1 NEWS
COAL CREEK EXCURSION
Students also got to experience what school was like in the past. Students went into an old class-room, where they were asked to line up in a girls and boys line, hang their hats and then sit at desks.
GRADE 2 NEWS
The Grade 2’s created information reports in writing! During our writing workshops the Grade 2 students created information reports on a variety of topics. Students were required to research their topic and then organise this information into a classification, description and conclusion for their information reports. The students enjoyed this task which allowed them to develop their com-prehension, writing and research skills. Some of the topics covered in their reports were Spain, The Great Barrier Reef, Melbourne and different types of animals.
Reminders:
We hope you have a fun and safe holidays, and we are looking forward to returning to Barton Primary School soon!

SCHOOL CONCERT
This week, we were able to finally show all of the parents and friends our end of year dances. Lots of practice has gone into our singing, our dances and the performance. We hope you loved it as much as we did!
CRANBOURNE SECONDARY COLLEGE
The year 5 students were lucky enough to visit Cranbourne Secondary College on Thursday 12th of December to experience a day of High School. The students were involved in a range of sub-jects including German, Science, P.E, Cooking, English and History. Take a look at some of the fun we had!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
I have been blown away with the progress that each and every student has made this year in Physical Education. Congratulations to all of the Senior students who competed in additional sports throughout the year. Your hard work, dedication and efforts in training ses-sions definitely did not go unnoticed.

The City of Casey has again teamed up with the Melbourne Stars to present the seventh annual Melbourne Stars Family Day for the Casey community on Sunday 15 December 2019 at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East.
Fatima and Jackson you have both come so far and I am incredibly proud of the Leaders you’ve both become! Thank you both for always being so eager to help, learn and for supporting our Junior students and peers with their learning.
"Leaders instill in their people a hope for success and a belief in themselves. Positive leaders empower people to accomplish their goals."

VISUAL ART
The past couple of weeks the Preps have been learning about symmetry. They made a symmetrical print of a butterfly and added decorations.
What’s been happening in Art?
The year 3/4’s have been learning about mosaics. We learnt about different mosaic artworks from around the world and then created our own mosaic of an Australian animal out of paper.
PERFORMING ART
END OF YEAR CONCERT!
What a fantastic night we had on Wednesday celebrating the end of the 2019 school year, and of course Christmas! It was brilliant to see all of our school community getting into the festivities, and the sea of red, green and white was wonderful. All of our students did a fabulous job per-forming - all of the rehearsals definitely paid off! I think everyone will agree with me that even some of our teachers were rather entertaining to watch while their classes were performing!
PERFORMING ART
I would like to say thank you to all of the teachers and staff for all of the hard work that they all put into preparing the end of year concert items, and for everyone’s help on the night making sure it was a smooth evening. What a team effort!
Also—a BIG thank you to Aanya and Subhreet for everything they have done throughout the year as Performing Arts Leaders—your help has been invaluable and you have shown wonderful lead-ership skills all year.
I hope everybody has a wonderful Christmas, and a safe and happy holiday season. Have a hap-py start to 2020!

ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES
Prep—Grade 2 students have continued learning about renewable energy sources, this time looking at wind turbines as a clean way of providing energy.
Grade 3/4 students have been mining for coal through an experiment using chocolate
chip cookies. Students were digging out the pieces of chocolate and comparing the be-fore and after effects of mining for coal on habitats. The students were shocked to see
how much devastation could be caused, even when they were tyring to be careful digging out the coal (chocolate pieces).
Grade 5 students have been refining their understanding of fossil fuels, the process of how coal is formed and the process of extracting it.
Grade 6 students had their final incursion with Ranger Sue from Phillip Island Nature Park as part of the Turn the Tide program they have been completing over this year. Students celebrated their action project and their plans to improve our community and reduce our
impact on the environment.
Miss Dunstan’s suggestions for a sustainable holiday period! Choose sustainable wrapping options like newspaper, decorate butchers pa-
per with your own design for a unique, and recyclable wrapping solution or use canvas/ fabric bags that can be used year round.
Give gifts that are useful. You could gift an experience or a membership - Zoos Victoria, Sealife Aquarium or the Museum are some fantastic options.
Reduce food waste after celebration feasts - Compost any fruit and vegetable scraps and try to use leftovers in other meals after the main feast.
Make your own greeting cards - Use recycled paper where possible and deco-rate using natural materials. Collect some dried leaves and sticks from the
ground and make your cards extra special!
ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES
Congratulations!
Well done to all of our fabulous students and community for
working to complete our Biodi-versity Star. Barton now has 3 of our 5 stars certified and we are on our way to becoming a 5 star
environmental school.
Turn the tide - Grade 6 Incursion
The Grade 6 students have been working hard to prepare an action plan to create a cleaner Barton, and community. The students have been tallying up the amount of single use coffee cups brought into our school yard in the mornings and after
school. The students were shocked to see that during the colder weeks the amount of coffee cups tallied reached over 78 cups!
The students presented their ideas at assembly last week and I was really proud of the way they spoke with such passion, about a topic they feel really strongly about.
Through the Turn the Tide program our students have been working with a Ranger from Philip Island Nature Parks to see the impact we are making on marine wildlife. The students visited Philip Island earlier this year and the Ranger returned to Bar-
ton this week to congratulate the students on their action plan.
Ranger Sue was so impressed with the commitment and hard work of our students, as am I! Well done Grade 6 students!
