Pre-fabricated wiring systems and lighting control

Pre-manufactured wiring systems for lighting and small power have become readily accepted as the preferred means of electrical installation for commercial environments. Flexible wiring systems offer design engineers the flexibility to realise sophisticated systems which would be more costly and difficult using conventional wiring methods. The products can be installed around a more rigid system such as heating and ventilation due to the flexibility of their design. This also ensures that modifications, either during or after installation, are easily achieved.

For the Contractor, the whole concept of flexible wiring systems is to drastically reduce installation times. All components in the system are connected together using industry standard plug and socket ‘G’ Type connectors which are both colour and mechanically coded preventing mismatching. A total “plug & play” solution for lighting, power and control cabling including L.C.M’s (lighting control modules) reduces the requirement for most on site wiring and with minimal components. This also reduces wastage and on site storage.

The client is concerned with minimising installation costs, ongoing running costs and payback periods whilst needing the flexibility in order to change building layouts to accommodate the occupants. The flexibility of the Metway Wiring System and Lighting Control components successfully meets all these objectives. The system can easily be reconfigured to meet the needs of a new tenant due to their simple design.

The Metway Wiring System provides many real benefits to the construction process, including:• Fast installation

• Reduced costs

• Standards compliance

Pre-fabricated wiring systems and lighting control

Ensuring complianceOver recent years, the government has been keen to promote the idea of offsite fabrication within the construction industry. Issues of Health & Safety, increasing costs and skills shortages are making these issues more prevalent each year. Government funded studies have been carried out to allow reference points for manufacturers to offer more suitable solutions for these challenges. Metway was involved at core level with a study carried out at the British Research Establishment in 2000/2001. Much information was gained from all the interested parties and it was clear that the desire to see these systems succeed was present. Key ideas were exchanged to make the process more simple and reliable for everyone.

With Metway at the core of developments, new and existing customers can be assured that the best solutions are available. Metway has been deeply involved with the BSI in drafting a standard for Pre-Fabricated wiring systems including components, manufacture, installation & testing and system configuration (BS8488:2009).

All component parts are approved to international standards and factory manufactured assemblies are subject to testing prior to shipment. All component parts are recyclable.

The Metway Pre-Fabricated flexible Wiring System utilises the industry standard range of ‘G’ Type connectors, thus ensuring the system is mechanically polarised and colour coded to prevent mismatching. All components are factory assembled and tested prior to despatch and incorporate a locking system on all interconnecting parts for added security. As the system is “modular” in design configuration and re-configuration is made simple and able to include all forms of lighting control from simple switching to fully addressable intelligent systems from the Metway Wiring Systems range.

Metway’s wiring system connectors comply with the following standards and approvals with utilised latching:• BS 61535 (installation couplers intended for permanent connection)

• EN 60320 (appliance couplers)

• EN 61984 (engaged & disengaged under load)

• VDE 0628 (installation systems)

• Manufactured to ISO 9001 / ISO 14001

• BS 8488:2009 + A1:2010

Compliance with BS61535 standard does not guarantee hazard avoiding non-interchangeability with connecting systems of various manufactures. Metway recommends that it’s connectors are not mated to other manufactures.

From conception to completionWe aim to assist our customers in every way possible, from specifiers and contractors through to end users.

Our expertise in project configuration allows us to aid customers with their project specification and to offer the best solution for client requirements.

Metway prides itself on working at all levels on projects from conception to final completion. Over the years Metway has worked with a large number of key M&E consultants on successful projects in the commercial, industrial & retail sectors with clients such as Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Debenhams, O2 and BAA.

Metway’s links to the lighting OEM industry enables a close liaison and supply source to some of the UK’s largest luminaire manufacturers from both the Wiring Systems and Connect divisions.

Extender Lead A pre-wired cable assembly of varying length with a male plug & female socket wired at each end allowi n g i tems of equipment to be connected as a final circuit. i.e. looping between luminaires.

Starter Lead

A pre-wired cable assembly of varying length with a female socket at one end and f r ee en d on th e other.

Spider Lead

A pre-wired cable assembly of varying length with a male plug at one end and free end on the other. Usually used to hard wire into a luminaire from a Lighting Control Module (LCM).

Switch Module

A range of pre-wired, pre-assembled connectors housed in a moulded unit to provide inclusion of manual switches and presence detection into the system.

Tee Module

A range of pre-wired, pre-assembled connectors housed in a moulded unit allowing the provision to branch off the circuit. i.e. at each luminaire.

Lighting Control Module

A unit housing pre-wired connectors offering varying degrees of interaction with the connected luminaires, from manual switching, presence detection, dimming and communication.

Presence Detection

Lights will be automatically turned on as a person or persons enter a room or area by the use of a Presence Detector and they will be turned off automatically after a set time when movement has not been detected. ( Auto On Auto Off )

Absence Detection

Absence detection is operated by way of a light switch, when a person or persons are entering a room or area they should operate the light switch as normal, when leaving the room or area they can either operate the switch or leave the Absence Detector to turn the lights Off after a set time when movement is not detected. ( Manual On Auto Off )

Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) (DALI) and Digital Signal Interface (DSI)

A dimming/communicating protocol used to alter the light output of a luminaire from a compatible sensor or control equipment.

PIR Detectors

Passive Infrared Detection, suitable for smaller offices and spaces. Operated by movement and body heat.

Microwave or HF Detectors

Microwave or High Frequency detectors are better used for larger open areas, offices and corridors or where detection of smaller movements is required. They can detect through stud partition glass and some doors, so careful consideration to their placement is required.

Female Connector

The female connector has split hollow tubes. Power always comes from the female. It is fully shrouded insulated to prevent touching the live pins, thus preventing electrical contact.

Male Connector

The male connector always receives power from the female. The metal pins are clearly visible.

Presence v Absence

A need for energy efficiency lighting control is becoming very much apparent.

Research recently conducted by CIBSE suggests that energy used for lighting in offices could be as much as 32%. An excellent way to reduce these costs is to use lighting controls.

Presence and Absence detectors are designed to pick up smaller movements, and sometimes referred to as ‘Occupancy sensors’ and are not to be confused with Motion detectors. Motion detectors are designed to be used in ‘Motion’ areas such as stairways and corridors.

Absence detection – The user has to manually switch on the lights or lighting by the way of a switch or switches, rather than being detected by the detector. The lights or lighting is then automatically switched off after a timed period of non-presence detection or they can be switched off by the switch upon exit.

Absence detection generally provides a greater energy and cost saving.

Area’s where you would consider using Absence detection are:

Meeting rooms, Board rooms, Presentation rooms, Classrooms and Individual offices.

Presence detection – The light or lights are automatically turned on by the detector when Presence is detected, they will turn off automatically after a timed period of non-detection.

Presence detection is in some cases cheaper to install as no switches are required.

Area’s where you would consider using Presence detection are:

Toilets, Bathrooms, Cupboards and Storerooms.

Both are designed to reduce the amount of energy that lighting uses, as the lights are only switched when there is presence and they both switch off when non-presence is detected.

They will not only give you considerable energy savings but also increase the lifetime of the light fitting or fittings.

Which system to choose?

At Metway Electrical Industries we have several different Lighting Control options to cater for most lighting control requirements. The

following pages summarise the benefits, applications and criteria of each option to allow you to choose the most suitable system. The

following three systems all utilise dual latching luminaire outputs complying with LIF requirements and preferred industry practise. More

details are available on our website or by phone from our sales office. Metway can also quote based on lighting layout drawings and a

specification. This would include all Lighting Control Modules, presence detectors and leads, producing a fully costed solution.

Metway Connection Centre System (MCC)

Standalone system. Quick and easy to install with usually no commissioning required

8 output and 10 output variants available. With two separate presence detector inputs. Units can also be wired in parallel to have multiple boxes controlled together (providing these oblige to the Amperage restraints)

Suitable for dimming and non-dimmable applications. Different presence detectors and luminaire leads can be used for either d i mmi n g or swi tch i n g ar r an g emen ts

Presence or Absence detection. We can supply presence detectors with additional cabling and plug to allow the introduction of an override or absence switch.

1 or 2 channel applications. The MCC can be installed to accommodate all the outputs switching together or split to have two halves switched separately (8 way MCC split to 2x 4 way & 10 way MCC split to 2x5 way) see MCC section.

Metway Standalone DALI System (MDCC)

12 outputs. For use with individual DALI luminaires.

Use with DALI Ballasts luminaires. This system communicates with each luminaire via the DALI protocol to allow individual grouping of each light fitting depending on the desired layout. For example this allows for fittings nearest interactive whiteboards to be grouped and switched separately.

Graduated Dimming. This allows for rows of luminaires to dim at different percentages parallel to the window (see example) and reduces the need for a photocell per row of lights.

Future Proof. Via the installation of network cabling and minimal additional control equipment this option can become a fully communicating system.

Plug and play installation. Simpler installation with all items supplied with plugs for quick and accurate installation.

Simple on site configuration. The individual set up of each room can be done by the installers using a simple programming remote to group the luminaires as required.

(Metway commissioning also available).

Metway Fully Addressable DALI System

10 individually addressable outputs. Each Lighting Control Module has 10 outputs and 4 switch inputs to cater nearly every required scenario.

Fully communicating. This allows occupancy information to be shared between the presence detectors to keep any essential lighting on if required.

Can communicate without the need for DALI ballasts. Although the system will normally communicate using the DALI protocol it can also work using its own open network allowing the use of DSI ballasts or switching only luminaires.

Emergency Monitoring. If required this system allows for emergency monitoring with fault reporting.

Head End P.C. available. For integration with a building management system.

Commissioning. Commissioning will be carried out by a Metway Commissioning Engineer.

Metway Connection Centre Applications

1 Channel Switching

One Connection Centre can be partnered with up to two switching presence detectors allowing either detector to switch the luminaires.

2 Channel Switching

By removing a pre-installed link in the Connection Centre the unit can be used as a two channel box therefore controlling two different rooms with separate presence.

2 Channel Switching & Dimming

By utilising a dimmable and a switching presence detector with the connection centre this can allow the luminaires adjacent to the window to dim as per the natural light levels with all the luminaires being switched via presence.

2 Channel Dimming

Where two separate dimmable areas are required this can be accomodated with one Connection Centre paired with two dimmable presence detectors by removing the pre-installed links inside the MCC. This will allow two areas to be dimmed separately as per the natural light levels.

The MCCMW6-DD microwave presence detector provides automatic control of lighting loads with optional manual control. The MCCMW6-DD detects movement using a highly sensitive microwave detector. This works by emitting low power microwave signals and measuring the reflections as the signals bounce off moving objects.

Output Channel 1 comprises a mains voltage relay capable of simple on/off switching, while Output Channel 2 provides dimmable control of either DALI or DSI type ballasts.

Functioning as a presence detector, the unit can turn lights on when a room is occupied and off when the room is empty. Optional settings allow lights to be turned off in response to ambient daylight, or to implement a maintained illuminance (daylight harvesting) system.

The flexibility of having two channels and two switch inputs allows the following example scenarios:

• Dim an outside row of luminaires whilst internal fittings are switched

• Provide absence detection for two separate ch an n els

• Maintained illuminance system with manual up/d own con tr ols

All functionality is fully programmable using an IR handset.

Addressable Area ControllerMA-AC

The Metway Area Controller enables manual duration testing of the emergency lighting system, and also provides an override ‘On’ facility for luminaires. These facilities are controlled by a key switch.

The Area Controller has 6 clean-contact mains-rated outputs. The Area Controller also has 2 clean-contact inputs which can be used for fire override ‘on’ or alarm system override ‘off’.

The MA-AC provides over-ride facilities for key switch commands; standard functions provide an ‘Emergency Test’ and an ‘Override All On’. It also features important test features, allowing a lighting control network to be checked before commissioning. In other words, the integrity of the installation can be checked when the network wiring is completed, and the lighting system fully working. All DALI strings are also tested. This protocol allows the building lighting to be functional before a Category B fit out but without commissioning costs.

The Metway Remote PIR Controller MA-HHI/R-PIR is highly flexible and communicates with the lighting control network through a PIR.

Upto 8 buttons can be configured to do any control task that can be performed by the PIR from scene changes, over rides or dimming to heating or window blinds.

The PIR Remote can be programmed with an address from 1 to 16 so that it is tied uniquely to a particular PIR and will not interfere with or communicate through any other PIR.

In an open plan office environment, for instance, the remote will only control a particular zone and will not interfere with lights in an adjacent area.

The remote can be supplied with a custom label so that if one button was programmed to, say, turn on the heating, this function would be marked as such on the label.

Also, if fewer functions than 4 were required buttons would simply be eliminated from the label graphics.

MA-HHI/R-PIRRemote PIR Controller

This Metway Scene Plate Remote MA-HHI/R-7B - performs the functions of a scene set control plate, which is used with our plug in and hardwired control modules to control different lighting groups at different levels as well as some other non-lighting functions.

Working with any scene set control plate, the seven buttons on this remote mimic the buttons on the scene set plate.

Using the remote you can call Scenes 1 – 4, Raise, Lower, and Off.

The Off button can also be programmed to a scene value.

By pressing and holding buttons 1 – 4 you call scenes 5 – 8.

The remote requires no commissioning, but it requires a programmed scene set control plate to work with.

Our Scene Set Control Plates are used with our plug in and addressable control modules to permit the control of different lighting groups at different levels.

From the plate you can call Scenes 1 - 4, Raise, Lower, and Off. The Off button can also be programmed to a scene value. You press and hold buttons 1 - 4 to call scenes 5 - 8. Functions are identical on the Architrave Plate except that that there are 2 fewer buttons.

Control plates have blue LED back lighting for location and scene identification, and scenes can are programmed via hand-held programmer, wirelessly via Bluetooth from a PC, or by using the buttons (eliminating the need for specialist equipment).

These Scene Set Plates match our Switch Plates and conform to a standard single-gang plate profile, fitting 25mm surface or flush mounted back boxes. A Wandsworth Group Series 2 range of control plate is used and the standard finish is brushed stainless steel. However, any other plate finish from the Series 2 range can be substituted. Switch Plates from our architrave range can also be requested.

Connection to the system is by 4-core cable with a push on-male plug to the scene set plate and an RJ12 connector to the LCM.

The MA-DALIPIR presence detector is a sensor for automatic lighting control. It detects movement using a PIR sensor, which updates the light controller using a DALI interface.

When an area is no longer occupied, the device times out after a configurable period. This detector features our Progressive Sensitivity function to eliminate false triggering. There is also an integral lux detector, enabling the sensor to control daylight linking.

Daylight linking can be configured either to keep lights off when there is sufficient ambient light, or used as part of a closed loop to maintain a pre-set luminance level in a dimmable system.

When using the lux detector, an extra DALI address is assigned to the unit. Being DALI, the device ID is randomised during commissioning, and there is a visual alert showing when a device has not been addressed.

The walk-test mode, indicated by a built-in LED, helps when configuring the detector. The MA-DALIPIR is connected via a screw terminal on the rear in a standard DALI two wire configuration, powered from the data line.

However, for applications where the current drain would be too high for the bus to be sustained, PIRs can be powered from the DALI64 using a 4-wire connection. This neat, compact PIR is an ideal choice for mounting in trunking or on luminaires, and where aesthetics are important.

The MA-DALIPIR can also be specified with custom painted bezels to further help the sensor blend into the sur f ace on wh i ch i s i t moun ted

The new Besa Box Socket Outlet Range are designed to fit standard ‘G’ type industry preferred connectors in 3, 4 and 6 pole versions.

All versions fit straight onto standard round U.K. plastic or metal besa / conduit boxes.

Typical applications for this type of connector would be any installation that has fire regulations insisting on mechanical containment of cabling within the building fabric, e.g. where the use of conduit and conduit boxes is required, examples of which are hospitals, retail, government buildings and council offices, airports and large multi-use office blocks especially for CAT A installs.

The easy fit and connect Besa box is supplied with fixing screws. It offers an easy loop in and out facilitated by double stacked terminal design on mounting plate connectors. The latching plug feature ensures and maintains positive connection.

Moulded in V0 grade plastic and rated at 16A, 230V AC +/- 10%, 50Hz with a terminal capacity of 2.5 mm², this product is compliant with BS 733:2010+A1:2014 and the connectors to BS61535.

BESA BoxSocket Connection Range

Testing

All Metway cable assemblies and manufactured products are checked for continuity, polarity, pull/torque tests and visual inspection prior to despatch.

On site the following recommendations were compiled by a member of the ECA technical committee.

Method Statement Electrical Testing of Wiring Systems (Lighting) Circuits Testing of an installation should be carried out as highlighted below and in accordance with the current edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations to BS7671.

Dead tests: (to be carried out before installation of Lighting Control Modules)

1. Carry out visual inspection of the following:

· circuit terminations against marked up record drawings (kept on site) and MCB chart

· all pre-fabricated wiring systems components to ensure no damage during installation

· distribution boards to check corrective protective devices are installed in accordance wi th th e f use ch ar t

2. Ensure no open ends of wiring system

3. Using 500v insulation resistance / continuity tester, prove each circuit identity from single cores on ‘home run’ cable at distribution board to connections at PDH position (the home run cable being the only site connection). Record test instrument serial number and calibration certificate

4. Test continuity of protective conductors

5. Test insulation resistance

6. Test polarity by continuity method

7. Test earth electrode resistance, when using and earth electrode resistance tester

Live TestsAll tests to be co-ordinated by authorised person for LV switching on site

1. Ensure all information is completed on the test sheet prior to completing the last stage of the tests, e.g. cable size and length, MCB type & rating, etc2. Re check polarity

3. Carry out continuity test (R1) using the wandering lead method, indicating compliance by a tick in the relevant column

4. Test earth electrode resistance when using a loop impedance tester. Readings more than 2 ohm are to be recorded and investigated further

5. Mark distribution board live in accordance with standard live working policy

6. Carry out earth loop fault impedance on each luminaire circuit, at luminaire furthest from the distribution board on each corresponding protective device for the circuit. Record EFLI value, test instrument serial number and calibration date

7.Carry out RCD testing where installed, recording 5x setting along with instrument serial number and calibration date

Installation Guidelines

Electrical Installations, whether pre-wired or conventional, fall within the scope of the electricity at work regulations 1989. This is a statutory act of Parliament which states that an electrical installation must be safe and gives brief requirements. The details of how to achieve this is given in BS 7671 of the IEE wiring regulations and is applicable to all buildings. The following guidelines are recommendations only and the installation of a pre-fabricated wiring system must be installed in accordance with the current version of the IEE Wiring Regulations BS 7671.

General Guidelines

All equipment should be inspected prior to installation to ensure that it has not been damaged in transit. It should also be checked against any installation drawings and bills of materials. Any products found to be damaged or faulty should be returned to Metway for replacement. Under no circumstances should any alteration be attempted unless written approval is obtained.

It is good practice to site the Primary Distribution Hubs first and work the home run back to the distribution board. Coiling excess length of home run is not permitted and must be cut to the required length. Components can be fixed to soffits, floor slabs and building structure and should not rely upon a suspended ceiling for support. Manufacturers’ guidelines should be followed for maximum deflection of the cables between suspension points, which may vary according to the type and construction of the cable used. Upon completion, the installation must be tested as if it were a fixed installation in accordance with BS 7671.

Installation Method

Primary Distribution Hubs shall be securely fixed to the building fabric and sited so that they remain accessible for future testing/maintenance. Home runs must either be supported by a suitable tray/basket system or clipped directly to the building fabric. Recommended fixing centres 1.2m. Lighting control modules should be securely fixed to the building fabric or suspended on drop rods and sited so that they remain in an accessible area.

All cabling must be suitably supported in order that no undue stress is placed upon the connection points. It is recommended that a fixing be placed within 150mm of the connection point and at 1.2m intervals. If cables are laid directly upon the suspended ceiling then the ceiling system should be checked to ensure that it is suitable to take the additional weight. (This method is not recommended).

Excess lengths of cables should be avoided and correct lengths used wherever possible. Excess cable should be coiled in one large loop only and not to exceed minimum bending radius. Cable loops should not be hung over cable ladder/unistrut as this will act as a coil. Bunching of cables should be avoided and laid flat horizontal if greater than three cables. The joining of prefabricated leads is discouraged and correct lengths should be used to minimise connections and resistance.

Tee modules should be fixed directly to the equipment they serve or mounted nearby and the cables supported to ensure there is no strain on the connection points.

Any deviation from the original layout drawings should be approved and fully recorded. Any deviation from the original installation will be subject to review and re-testing.

(ALL CONNECTIONS MUST BE FULLY ENGAGED OR PUSHED “HOME” AND LATCHED IF APPLICABLE)

The following statement is taken from BS 61535: 2006 Annex B3 – Installation.

• Ensure that the installation couplers are fully engaged and the retaining means are reliably locked after connecting installation plugs and installation sockets.

• Ensure that the installation couplers are not under excessive strain. In case of doubt, fix the cable.

• Ensure that the installation coupler is not dangerously compatible with other systems used at the site (with different installation coupler systems nor with domestic plug & socket outlet systems).

• Statement if the installation coupler is not suitable for installation in readily accessible areas and statement if additional parts or precautions are necessary for use in readily accessible areas.

• Notice that installation coupler systems are not replacements for national domestic plug & socket outlet systems.

(NOTE – use of installation couplers and testing (initial verification) should be carried out to the national wiring rules. This must be done by a skilled person.)
