Message from the TLMI Founder

One of the best parts of hospital administration for me is identifying and supporting emerging leaders among my staff and watching them catch and own the vision of the organization. More often than I want to admit, I promoted great people to management positions and then failed to qualify them for the new roles with adequate training. I can vividly remember the strategic planning retreat when the vision for TLMI was formed. Other CEOs felt the same frustration, and few of us had access to resources to do much about it. Together, the TORCH Board and staff developed a program that now gives rural hospital staff the opportunity to acquire and sharpen management and leadership skills.

If as a hospital executive you think your organization needs to step up its leadership talent, TLMI can help you move forward. I recommend that you identify a critical mass of staff, commit them beforehand to the expectations you have of them, and be prepared to measure the success afterward. By critical mass of staff, I mean those not only in management positions presently, but also those high performers you are counting on for the future. I can personally attest that this worked for Uvalde Memorial Hospital. I saw Sharon Hunt, CEO at W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital, take a large group to the first TLMI conference and realized how smart she was for assuring what was learned there had a chance to go viral throughout her organization. I took 20 staff members the next year, and it started a culture shift in our hospital that over five years later is still being felt. Our employee engagement scores progressed dramatically such that we have enjoyed 99th percentile rankings the past 2 years. I cannot see surviving today’s healthcare environment without a highly motivated staff. TLMI can help.

~ Jim Buckner, Administrator/CEO Uvalde Memorial Hospital

Message from the President & CEO

Strong leadership is always in demand, and you and your staff have access to high-quality education and high-level networking through the TORCH Leadership & Management Institute (TLMI). TLMI is a program that truly emphasizes the critical leadership skills that are essential for rural healthcare. We appreciate that our Board of Directors has made this such a high priority for TORCH. TLMI’s multi-faceted approach to leadership training is intended for executives, managers and emerging leaders throughout rural Texas. We aim to empower our member hospitals through grassroots efforts to get employees engaged in improving the organizational culture from the inside out. Every rural hospital can build future leaders and we encourage our hospitals to expose their staff to the variety of high-quality on-site and distance education resources available through TLMI.

We hope you participate in our Leadership Institute in the future and share the message with peers and colleagues. Thank you for your membership and for your support of this one-of-a-kind rural leadership initiative.

~ David Pearson, President & CEO Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals

The TORCH Leadership & Management Institute (TLMI) was created in 2006 by the Board of Directors for the purpose of providing effective leadership and management training to promote the professional and personal development of healthcare executives, mid-level managers and emerging leaders in rural and community hospitals in Texas. The Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals (TORCH) and the TORCH Foundation recognize the fundamental goal of every organization is to succeed. To this end, we have worked together to build and expand a unique program that offers:

Outstanding leadership and management education; Individual and organizational development training; Personal and professional growth; Networking and relationship-building; And so much more!

The fundamental goal of every organization is to succeed. To stay successful it must continually engage and invest in organizational development to cultivate the talents of its most important asset—its staff.

Highly successful leaders continuously invest in gaining new knowledge and skills. As the healthcare industry continues to face new challenges, it will require leaders who are poised to move their organization to the next level. Join your colleagues and connect with other healthcare leaders for invaluable learning and networking experiences that will enable you to promote success. and organizational excellence

“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out

to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent. In the end, leaders are much like eagles…the y don’t flock, you find them

one at a time.”

ESSENCE of LEADERSHIP

RURAL IMPORTANCE

4

Developing Our Leaders,

Strengthening Our Communities

Rural Texas is a place of significance. From geography to resources, history to economy, rural Texas is a significant contributor to the overall vitality of the state. Home to over 3 million residents, rural Texas communities are known for their enormous resilience and social capital.

Amidst today’s complex healthcare, economic, political, social and cultural forces, the need for strong leaders in rural communities has never been greater. These challenges must spur us to action and strengthen our resolve to ensure the vitality of rural Texas, preserve its rich heritage, and honor its roots. In true Texan spirit, we do this by working together to continually build and support a strong local workforce, quality healthcare, excellent schools and education, and vibrant economic opportunities. We must recognize the critical interdependencies among rural health, the well-being of our local communities, and the overall quality of life for all Texans. As the TORCH Leadership & Management Institute works to provide resources and education to support current and emerging leaders in healthcare, I urge each of you to engage meaningfully in its activities so that, together, we can improve local capacity, which in turn, will strengthen our communities so that we can reap the rewards for all Texans.

The bottom line is simple: the importance of rural cannot be understated. In order to have a viable and desirable quality of life for all Texans, rural Texas must survive—and thrive—as a place of lasting significance where words like heritage and legacy are synonymous with rural areas.

~ Wallace Klussmann, Ph.D. TLMI Leadership Council

Retired Professor Emeritus, Texas A&M University

To promote professional and personal success, our leadership program focuses on a set of professional and personal skills, knowledge, attributes and competencies that will enhance a leader’s performance. The program combines skills development training in each of the eight areas (as depicted above), interactive discussions and presentations to provide an invaluable setting for learning, networking and growth. Participants can apply the skills they learn not only in work settings, but in life as well.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FOCUS

In this time of unprecedented change in our nation’s healthcare industry, the need is ever so great for high-caliber, impactful leaders. To help cultivate outstanding leadership, the TORCH Leadership & Management Institute focuses its education on relevant topics that grow organizations, teams and individuals; that catalyze staff engagement, productivity and motivation; and that enhance performance levels for a culture of success. This program’s education component combines skills development training with quality education in each of eight designated topic areas (as depicted on the previous page). Therefore, program participants can always depend on TLMI to be comprehensive and well-balanced.

Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When

you become a leader, success is all about growing others.

TLMI ANNUAL CONFERENCE & RETREAT

“The conference had many great bits of information. We were inspired to dream big and to aspire to accomplish what we dream, to not only communicate when we speak but to ‘converse’ with our co-workers and employees as well as our family members, and to have some understanding of how to raise our standards and those of our colleagues because nothing makes an organization like individuals who are led to feel that they can be creative and uninhibited in a positive way. We were also encouraged to be cognizant of the underlying factors that could make or break facilities financially as well as the changes that may be on the horizon.

The only drawback of this conference was that it was almost too much to take in, in such a short amount of time. Thanks to all who made this conference such a success and at such a beautiful place. Your hard work is appreciated.”

Experiential Learning

THRIVING HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS share something in common. Regardless of size, geographic location, or specialty, all truly successful healthcare organizations have built a culture of success, leadership and learning. Despite the belief that leaders are born, research proves otherwise. Leaders are grown and developed, and truly great organizations are the ones that can do it well. While management is often denoted by title, leadership may occur at any level in the organization. Healthcare organizations that embrace this by investing in training and professional development have reaped the benefits. Loyal customers, word of mouth referrals, happy employees, exceptional customer service, and accountability are just a few of the benefits of dedicating the time, energy and resources it takes to effectively develop employees at all levels of the organization. These organizations understand that you cannot react your way to success but must develop a strategy and a plan to accomplish it. They start by investing in their greatest asset, their employees. Through the ongoing coaching, training, and development of staff at all levels, a culture of excellence is grown and habituated. TORCH has embraced the learning culture. By providing a broad range of education and leadership opportunities, they have become an invaluable resource for their members and constituents.

” TLMI Healthcare Fellowship

TORCH maintains a fundamental commitment to rural healthcare and recognizes the need for strong leaders who can articulate a clear and compelling vision for rural hospitals. With this steadfast priority in mind and through the TLMI program, we have developed a special training program for working healthcare professionals and emerging leaders in rural Texas. This opportunity is a year-long training program that assists participants with their journey towards professional achievement and success. This program:

Enables participants to work on their relationship-building capacity by attending 3-4 key education and networking events;

Allows participants to enhance their communication skills by completing a capstone project, under the supervision of the TLMI Leadership Council, that will be formally presented at the TLMI Annual Conference & Retreat in the Fall;

Fosters a team environment and team-building atmosphere by assigning collaboration exercises with other TLMI fellows; and

Encourages the development of coaching and mentoring abilities by designating graduating fellows as mentors to the new class of inducted fellows.

Fellowship stipends are awarded to selected healthcare professionals. Our goal is to give Fellows the tools, education, resources, mentoring and experience to enhance their ability to contribute to their communities as leaders.
