Pastor Ali and the reopening team meet regularly to make plans for how Indian Heights UMC is safely reopening. Latest updates based on these meetings, and recommendations by our Bishop, other Pastors in the area and the CDC include:

• The church office is open, Monday-Thursday, 9:30-2:30. If you can, please call 913.649.9040 to make an appointment with Suzette before coming in; all are asked to wear a mask and maintain social distancing by not entering the office but standing in the doorway so Suzette or Pastor Ali can assist you.

• Worshiping together continues to be at 10:30am via Facebook live until further notice...but watch for updates!! We are trying to meet in person outside as we are able...but this is a week-by-week decision. News will be emailed to everyone on our email list, and also posted on our Facebook.

• Videos from all Sunday worship experiences continue to be posted on our website Monday mornings, and stay on our Facebook for viewing indefinitely.

• Sunday’s bulletin will continue to be emailed by Friday, and posted on our website and also in the top line of Sunday’s online worship for each particular worship experience.

• Unless you’ve approved it with the Trustees, Suzette or Pastor Ali, we are asking that no one enters the building outside of office hours.

• Support groups (AA, etc.) are meeting per their leaders’ discretion, but only outside on the lawn. Watch for updates!!

• You can always email or call the church office with questions and any needs: 913.649.9040 or [email protected].

Our goal is not to spiritually distance ourselves, but to care for others the way we believe Christ directs us to do.

Church Re-Opening

Church-related small groups are able to meet again inside the building using social distancing. Please contact your group leader to see if your group will start up again, and any protocols (limits to size of group, etc.). Contact Pastor Ali with questions. Wearing masks is still mandatory inside the building, as is wiping all service areas; please let Suzette know (office) if you plan to meet so we know what rooms are being use and the calendar can be adjusted. Thank you.

Thank you to Dale and Sharon Sauer for cleaning up and building new flower beds at the entrance of the church! They worked during the hottest days of the summer to make the entry of the church look as beautiful as the inside! We bless you for your hard work and dedication to IHUMC! Thank you to all who have been weeding and pruning and otherwise helping maintain the exterior of the church this season.

VOLUNTEER NEEDS

Food Pantry Drive Cross-Line Community’s food pantry is in desperate need of non-perishables. We are asking people to bring donations (canned food, paper towels, etc.) to our church on Sundays, August 30 and September 6. Leave them in the tubs by our front door until dusk. These will be brought inside our building Sunday night, and then delivered to Cross-Lines early that week.

The Hub Looking for a way to serve in this season? Want to make a difference in a student's life? Join us at The Hub, KC District Mission Center at Metro East UMC in KCK, this fall and serve as one of our adult volunteers in our “Learning Pods” program. Our Learning Pods will provide educational, spiritual, and emotional support to middle and elementary school students in the Argentine community during the virtual learning season. Each pod will have no more than 10 kids and will meet twice a week for two hours a day from 1-3pm or 4-6pm. To minimize exposure, learning pods would be from less than five households, everyone will wear masks, and we will have safety and cleaning protocols. Please contact Rev. Carter Ellis, director of The Hub, for questions and more info on how to get involved. Reach Carter at: [email protected] or 704-734-8598.

Veronica’s Voice Thank you to all who brought donations to the church in support of Veronica’s Voice and the Savers FUNDrive!! The event was a great success!! Perhaps more important than the success of this event, which helped raise money for the women who live at Magdalen KC as they recover from being commercially sex trafficked, is the ever-growing community of people who support this cause and are joining in the effort to stop this form of oppression against women. For more information about Veronica’s Voice, including ways to volunteer, see veronicasvoice.org.

IHN Annual Auction Interfaith Hospitality Network is an agency that assists homeless families in Johnson County. Indian Heights UMC has supported IHN for many years. The annual auction for IHN will be held virtually this year on September 29, from 7-8pm. This Auction is a major support for IHN. Our church is asked to contribute a basket as we have in the past. The contents must be worth $100 minimum. This year the basket’s theme is: “THINGS TO DO DURING A PANDEMIC”. I will purchase items such as puzzles, games, books, movies, popcorn and brownie mix. The basket will be delivered to the Family Center on September 5. If you would like to contribute to this, send a check to the church with “IHN Auction” on the memo. Please send checks by September 15 to Indian Heights UMC (denote “IHN Auction” on the memo line). If you are interested in purchasing tickets for the auction go to: https://jocoihn.givesmart.com Thank you for your support of this important Outreach to love and care for our neighbors. ~ Carol Grantham

We sure had a lot of fun with our drive thru blessing of the backpacks in August! Even through the rain, we were still able to pray over and bless our back-to-school backpacks, and hand out popsicles to lots of kids! Here are a few pictures of those who helped make this rainy day event so much fun!!

Dear Friends, Thank you so much for my send off. I loved the video, kind words, and the songs really touched my heart. The parade was so much fun. Thank you for that! I really appreciate the generous gifts, too. That was so nice of all of you. I will always treasure the years I spent at Indian Heights, and will cherish the life-long friends I know have. Big hugs to all of you, and may God continue to bless Indian Heights. ~ Cheri White

Dear Indian Heights Congregation, Thank you so much for providing me with the opportunity to sing for you and thank you for the wonderful gift. I hope that when the time is right, and everything goes back to normal, that I’ll be able to make the journey up to meet everyone. Singing for you and your church has been amazing, so thank you for allowing me to continue doing what I love throughout this hard time. ~ Much Love, Laykin Leitnaker

Mark Your Calendars... We don’t have an exact date yet, but there is going to be a “fall auction” type event. Since we can’t meet in person, we are figuring out an alternative way to have our annual, big fall fundraiser for the church. Stay tuned….

Thank You

For the upcoming stewardship campaign, Pastor Ali will be reaching out to individuals to share their faith story and why they pledge at IHUMC. Stories will be shared during worship in October. If you would like take place in this project, please email Ali at [email protected]. Pastor Ali can come to your home to film your story or arrange for filming to take place at the church.

Fulfilling God’s Purpose!

C.S. Lewis said, “There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have it your way.’ ” As redeemed children of God, of course, we desire to belong to that first category, “Thy will be done.” On Sundays October 4

th-25

th, the theme of our

worship services will be Fulfilling God’s Purpose! We will learn how the Holy Spirit, working through Word and Sacrament, transforms us to be more like our Chief Steward, Jesus, who willingly poured out his life in giving and serving, ultimately sacrificing his very life for our eternal lives.

As your pastor, I pray that each of you will take advantage of these opportunities to grow in the grace and knowledge of your Lord that you might be strengthened in faith both for eternity and for a fruitful life here on earth. The themes for the four Sundays are as follows: Sunday October 4th, “Building Relationships” Sunday October 11th, “Witnessing for Jesus” Sunday October 18th, “Living as a Servant” Sunday October 25th, “Giving Joyfully and Generously”, Commitment Sunday “Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” . (1 Corinthians 15:58). Blessings and peace to you always,
