2012 brings an adventurous spirit, eager to discover the hidden treasures that Culebra has to offer. This time, we explore even more and we let the Island surprise us with its charm.

Our adventure led us to get acquainted with the delightful culinary creations of Chef Jenny Daubon. After, we visit Brava beach, where the overgrown forest puts us in direct contact with nature and reminds us to protect and preserve her. Last, but not least, we get to know a little bit more about the Asociación Educativa Pro Desarrollo Humano de Culebra and its 20 year commitment to the community through hard work and effort.

Because of this and so much more, we invite you to forget your plans and let Culebra surprise you.

El 2012 trae un espíritu aventurero y deseos de descubrir los tesoros escondidos que ofrece nuestra isla de Culebra. Esta vez nos adentrarnos aún más y le permitimos sorprendernos con su encanto.

Nuestra aventura nos lleva a conocer la simpatía que se refleja en las creaciones culinarias de la Chef Jenny Daubon. By SeaThere are different ways to travel to the island of Culebra by sea. You can travel on the ferry from the port of Fajardo, on your own boat or contract the services of a water taxi. Definitely, the most common way to travel is by ferry. The cost of the ticket is $2.25 including one bag. If you want to bring additional luggage the cost per item may vary.

By air...Culebra has various airlines operating from the Fernando L. Ribas Dominicci, Isla Grande Airport, located at the Puerto Rico Convention District in San Juan and the José Aponte de la Torre Airport, located at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Ceiba.

Both airports have private parking lots for the safety of your vehicle with daily rates. Some airlines offer charter services to the Island, with varying costs. Many use this alternative for groups of 8 people or less and can be scheduled to your convenience.

Por aire...Culebra cuenta con varias aerolíneas que operan desde el Aeropuerto Fernando L. Ribas Dominicci de Isla Grande, localizado en el Distrito de Convenciones de Puerto Rico en San Juan y el Aeropuerto José Aponte de la Torre, localizado en la antigua base de Roosevelt Roads en Ceiba.

Ambos aeropuertos cuentan con estacionamiento privado para la seguridad de sus vehículos y los mismos tienen tarifas diarias. Algunas aerolíneas ofrecen los servicios de “charters” y sus costos varían. Muchos optan por esta opción cuando son grupos de hasta 8 personas y se puede coordinar para el horario que más le convenga a los visitantes.

Se conoció como la Isla Pasaje o Isla de San Idelfonso, (en honor al obispo San Idelfonso de la Culebra). Culebra cuenta con 10 playas, 4 bosques, 8 bahías, 4 lagunas y 24 cayos. Además cuenta con la Reserva Natural Luis Peña, uno de los mejores lugares para la práctica del snorkeling en Culebra.

gInvitamos a todos a explorar Culebra. Ya sea en Jeep, en bici, en kayak o a pie, encontrarás que Culebra tiene muchísimo que ofrecer y disfrutar.

Whether  in a Jeep, bike, on foot or kayak, Culebra  always manages  to  surprise visitors at the turn of any corner. Here are several alternatives to explore the island on your next trip:

In  Jeep -  If you have  the chance to rent  a vehicle, seize the moment to tour the island and enjoy the scenery en route to the 3 end points of Culebra: Flamenco, Zoní, and Punta Soldado. On the way you will find spectacular  views that will force you to stop to capture those photos that will make you the envy of all your friends.

On  Bike -  Apart from being good exercise, cycling  is also an excellent  means of transportation in Culebra. You can reach any part of the Island  on it. Sure!  Some destinations require a  little more effort  than others.  The town of  Dewey  and the airport  are low impact areas,  suitable  for all.  The road  #250  to Punta  Soldado  is of medium impact. Enjoy the  view  and tranquility of  Ensenada  Honda and Fulladoza Bay. The routes to Flamenco and Zoní  have the highest  impact.  Flamenco  has  a hill that  many choose to  walk up, and the road  #250  to  Zoní  is a  fairly long ride.  On the way  you could visit  the Museo de la Historia

de Culebra, the Camp,  and cross  the National Wildlife Refuge. Remember to bring plenty of water and keep hydrated. Also,  you can ride  your  bike  to Melones or  Tamarindo Beach and enjoy the sunset ... you won’t regret it.

On foot – There’s no better way of getting to know the town of Dewey than on foot. Between souvenir carts, gift shops, art galleries, restaurants and the charisma of the culebrenses, you will see how time slows down. You can also explore Culebra’s coastline. A lot of people enjoy taking walks on the shore of its beaches enjoying the sound of their waves. Also, you can hike to beaches like Carlos Rosario and adventure your way to Brava or Resaca Beach. It’s very important that you leave word that you’re hiking, keep hydrated and always use adequate footwear. That way, you can enjoy your hike without any pain or regrets.

On Kayak – Why not see the Island from another perspective? Kayaking in Ensenada Honda, Dákiti, Las Pelá or Tamarindo offers another way to enjoy the Culebra. In Tamarindo, you could take a guided tour through the Luis Peña Nature Reserve; where you can also enjoy some snorkeling. If you rent a kayak, Ensenada Honda is perfect to relax in the mangroves and low waters of Dákity. Although it is high impact exercise, kayaking through the Island is a marvelous medium for relaxation and meditation.

We invite you to explore Culebra. No matter how you decide to explore it, you will find that it has much to offer and enjoy.

En Jeep – Si tienes la oportunidad de alquilar un vehículo, aprovecha la ocasión para recorrer la Isla y disfrutar los paisajes de camino a las

playas de Flamenco, Zoní, y Punta Soldado, que son los 3 extremos de Culebra. A lo largo del paseo encontrarás espectaculares vistas que te obligarán a detenerte para capturar esas fotos que te convertirán en la envidia de todos tus amigos.

En Bici – Más allá de ser un buen ejercicio, la bicicleta también es un excelente modo de transportación en Culebra. Puedes llegar a cualquier

parte de la Isla en ella. ¡Claro! Llegarás a algunos lugares con un poco más de esfuerzo que a otros. El poblado de Dewey y el aeropuerto son áreas de bajo impacto, aptos para todo público. La carretera #250 hacia Punta Soldado es de mediano impacto. Disfrutarás de las vistas y tranquilidad de Ensenada Honda y Bahía Fulladoza. La ruta hacia Flamenco y hacia playa Zoní son las de mayor impacto. Flamenco tiene una pendiente que muchos optan por subir caminando y la carretera #250 hacia Zoní es un recorrido bien extenso. En el camino podrías visitar el Museo de la Historia de Culebra, El Campamento, y cruzar por la Reserva Natural de Vida Silvestre. Recuerda llevar mucha agua y mantenerte hidratado. También, puedes llegar con tu bici a la Playa Melones o a la Playa Tamarindo, perfectas para ver el atardecer… no te arrepentirás.

A pie – No existe mejor manera de conocer el poblado de Dewey que a pie. Entre carretas, pequeños gift shops, galerías de artes, restaurantes y

el carisma de la gente, descubrirás como el tiempo en Culebra se detiene. Puedes optar por explorar sus costas. Muchos gustan caminar por las orillas de las playas y relajarse con el sonido de sus olas. Además puedes hacer una caminata a playas como Carlos Rosario y aventurarse a conocer Playa Brava o Resaca. Importante: Siempre deja saber que harás estas caminatas, mantente hidratado y lleva zapatos adecuados, así podrás disfrutar del camino sin lamentos ni dolencias.

En Kayak – ¿Por qué no ver la Isla desde otra perspectiva? Pasear por kayak por Ensenada Honda, Dákiti, Las Pelá o Tamarindo refrescará tu modo de disfrutar Culebra. En Tamarindo podrías participar en un tour guiado por la Reserva de Luis Peña, donde también podrás hacer snorkeling. Si optas por alquilar un kayak, Ensenada Honda es perfecta para sentir la tranquilidad de los mangles y llanos de agua. Aunque es una actividad física fuerte, recorrer la Isla en kayak es maravilloso para el relajamiento y la meditación.

There are countless  conversations  that begin with the  question,  “what is  your favorite beach in Culebra?” and end with “Where do you recommend  to eat in Culebra?” Both  very difficult to answer because there is something for everyone. The truth  is that the  culinary offerings  of  Culebra have created a fan base over the years. One of the flavors that  have captivated us  since the beginning  are  the culinary creations of Chef Jennifer Daubon.

This “Jibarita” of Culebra, raised around food, fell in love with cooking since very early on because her parents owned  a restaurant  for over 20  years.  Although  she tells us that she didn’t hold a knife until the culinary school in 1998, she was always there tasting. Jennifer completed her Bachelor of Science in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Whales University in Miami Florida. After completing her studies, she returned to the Island where she worked under the tutelage of Chef Roberto Treviño at the Parrot Club in San Juan. Absorbing all the experience she could, she decided to return to the small island where she grew up and establish her own restaurant, with her own style, giving birth to Juanita Bananas.

“My father and I always talked about setting up a restaurant when I returned, so we did, my way... so the concept of Juanita Bananas was born, Juanita as in Jennifer… and Banana’s ‘cause you must be crazy in this life ... you know, make it fun”.

After 3 years of preparation in December 2004, Juanita Bananas  opens its doors  and since then  we haven’t stopped enjoying her culinary whims. It was her passion for sushi and Asian food that motivated her to take the risk of including sushi as part of their menu. “I ate sushi every week while studying. When I returned, we said ‘lets do sushi Mondays’, but really it was to satisfy my cravings. It all started with a whim. I adapted my sushi to Culebra.” The salmon crunch roll was the one she served to convert people to sushi; so they would learn to love it.

Panko Crusted Risotto Balls, Sushi Style Asian Tuna, Asian Style Tuna Steak with White Asparagus Salad-Coconut Rice, Veggie Roll with broccoli, carrot, pepper, cucumber or a Pork Tenderloin Caramelized Onions & Comfit Tomatoes and Peruvian Fries   are some  of

the dishes unveiled at her restaurant. In each you can savor the perfect blend of ingredients which makes each bite unique. Jennifer knows her ingredients and knows how to make the most of each.

“... The ingredients do not make the chef. It’s being able to make a five star dish with three basic ingredients. That’s what makes a good chef. You learn to cook with things that the place provides, not depend on certain ingredients.”

To Jennifer, the geographical limitations of Culebra are what forced her to experiment, to do what she could with what she had. “Always start with the things you know you have and then add an occasional little something special.” So with the help of her father, she built their hydroponic and created their own harvest which gave them from malanga to oregano.

Now, Juanita Bananas exists with another style, smaller and informal, but always with good food. The menu is so varied and the most difficult question to answer is “What do you recommend?”.

“My specialty is sauces, I’m a saucier. I love making sauces. I spend time experimenting with that. Some customers who knew Juanita Banana’s come here looking for food they know”.

Instead we always enjoy tasting the new creations of this talented chef and let her surprise us. If you have the opportunity, you should do it too.

Son innumerables las conversaciones que comienzan con la pregunta: ¿cuál es tu playa favorita de Culebra? y terminan con ¿a dónde me recomiendas ir a comer en Culebra? Ambas muy difíciles de contestar porque hay de todo para todos los gustos. La realidad es que las ofertas culinarias de Culebra han creado fanaticada a través de los años. Uno de los sabores que nos ha cautivado desde sus inicios son las creaciones culinarias de la Chef Jennifer Daubon.

Esta jibarita culebrense fue criada entre la comida y desarrolló su gusto por la cocina desde muy temprano ya que sus padres tuvieron un restaurante por más de 20 años. Aunque nos dice que no tocó un cuchillo hasta llegar a la escuela culinaria en el 1998, siempre estuvo allí probando. Jennifer, completó su bachillerato en Ciencias en Artes Culinarias en la Universidad Jonhson & Whales de Miami Florida. Luego de culminar sus estudios regresó a la isla donde trabajó bajo la tutela del Chef Roberto Treviño en el Parrot Club en San Juan. Absorbiendo toda la experiencia que podía, tomó la decisión de regresar a la islita que la vió crecer y establecer su propio restaurante, con su propio estilo, naciendo así Juanita Banana’s.

“Mi padre y yo siempre hablabamos de montar un restaurante y cuando regresé, así lo hicimos, a mi manera, “my way…” así nació el concepto de Juanita Bananas, Juanita de Jenifer y Bananas de ‘debes estar loco en esta vida … debes hacerlo divertido”

Luego de 3 años de preparación, para diciembre de 2004, Juanita Banana’s abre sus puertas y desde entonces no dejamos de disfrutar sus caprichos culinarios. Su pasión por el sushi y la comida asiática la motivó a

arriesgarse a incluir el sushi como parte de su menú. “Yo comía sushi todas las semanas mientras estudiaba. Cuando regresé dije vamos a hacer los sushi Monday’s, pero en verdad era para saciar mi antojos… comenzó por un capricho mio. Yo adapté mi sushi a Culebra” El salmon crunch roll era el que le servía a la gente para convertirlos al sushi y para que aprendan a cogerle el gustito.”

Bolas de rissotto empamanas con Panko, atún asiático al estilo sushi, steak de atún al estilo asiático con ensalada de arroz con coco y esparragos blancos, rollo vegetariano con brócoli zanahoria pimientos y pepinillo, lomo de cerdo con cebolla caramelizada, tomates confitados y papas fritas a la peruana son algunos de los platos que dieron a conocer a su restaurante. En cada uno se saborea la mezcla perfecta de sus ingredientes haciendo cada bocado único. Jennifer conoce bien sus ingredientes y demuestra como sacarles el máximo a cada uno de ellos.

“Los ingredientes no hacen al chef. Es poder hacer un plato cinco estrellas con tres ingredientes básicos. Eso es lo que hace a un buen chef. Tú aprendes a cocinar con las cosas que te provee un lugar, no dependes de ciertos ingredientes.”

Para Jeniffer las limitaciones geográficas de Culebra la obligan a experimentar, a hacer lo que puede con lo que se tiene. Siempre

empieza con las cosas que sabe que tiene y luego le añade alguna que otra cosita especial. Por eso, junto a su padre construyó su hidropónico y creó su propia siembra que le daba desde malanga hasta recao.

Ahora, Juanita Bananas existe con otro estilo, más pequeño e informal pero siempre con la buena comida. El menú es tan variado y la pregunta más difícil de contestar es “¿qué me recomiendas?”.

“Mi especialidad son las salsas, soy una saucier. Me encanta hacer salsas. Me paso experimentando con eso. Algunos clientes que conocían a Juanita Banana’s llegan aquí buscando la comida que conocen.”

Nosotros, por el contrario siempre, gozamos de las nuevas creaciones de esta talentosa chef y nos dejamos sorprender. Si tienes la oportunidad, hazlo tú también.

Hacía mucho que no regresaba a Culebra, y esta vez me propuse sorprender a unos

amigos y mostrarle que el paraíso sí existía. Ellos nunca habían visitado la Isla y su curiosidad era grande con todas mis narrativas. Ellos deseaban hacer snorkeling  y yo sabía que los escenarios más bellos de vida marina se encontraban allí. Viajamos por avión y la vista aérea es impresionante, la costa norte desde Isla Grande hasta Culebra es espectacular. La aventura comenzaba muy bien.   Una vez aterrizamos buscamos información. Para nuestra sorpresa nos topamos con la mejor “guía turística” que pudimos encontrar: Xiomara, la artesana de la plaza de recreo. Ella fue nuestra luz esos tres días de visita. Nos recomendó la Playa Melones y Playa Tamarindo para  snorkeling y no fue para menos.      A la mañana siguiente no podíamos esperar, estábamos ansiosos por descubrir todo aquello que nos ofrecía la Isla. Montamos nuestros equipos y comenzamos en Tamarindo. Los avistamientos fueron desde tortugas hasta una mantarraya bebé, la experiencia era de película. Mis invitados estaban sorprendidos y pasmados de tanta belleza natural.  La tarde nos sorprendió en Melones y la puesta de sol era la más hermosa que hubiese visto con el Cayo Luis Peña haciéndole marco.  Era como si se detuviese el tiempo y quedáramos allí plasmados para la eternidad.  Definitivamente, esa escena marcaría nuestras vidas y el deseo insaciable de regresar e intentar superar lo que, sólo Culebra, puede superar.

You might be next! Inolvidable regreso

It had been a long time since I returned Culebra and this time I decided to surprise some friends and show them that paradise does exist. They had never visited the Island and their curiosity peaked with all my narratives. They wanted to go snorkeling and I knew that the most beautiful marine scenery could be found there. We travelled by air and the view was impressive; the North coast from the “Big Island” to Culebra is spectacular. The adventure started out very well.

Once we landed we looked for i n f o r m a t i o n . Much to our surprise, we ran into the best “tourist guide” we could find: Xiomara, the c r a f t s w o m a n from the town square. She was the light of our eyes those

three days we were there. She recommended Melones Beach and Tamarindo Beach for snorkeling and she wasn’t lying.

The next morning we couldn’t contain ourselves, we were anxious to discover everything the Island had to offer. We set up our equipment and started out in Tamarindo. We saw from sea turtles to a baby stingray, like you would experience on film. My guests were surprised and amazed by so much natural beauty. The afternoon snuck up on us in Melones and the sunset was the most beautiful I had ever seen with Cayo Luis Peña as its frame. It was as if time stood still and we were there for eternity. Definitely, that scenery would mark our lives and the insatiable desire to return and try to surpass what only Culebra could.

The challenge when visiting Culebra is trying to decide which of the many fantastic beaches of the Island to go to. For such as small island, the beaches of Culebra come with a variety of features and particularities. But my mind is set on visiting Brava Beach this time. Brava is an isolated beach on the wild north shore of the Island. I visited Brava seventeen years ago to surf with some friends and although I travel to Culebra frequently, inexplicably, I have not returned since. I always end up floating at another of Culebra’s gorgeous beaches but the images of Brava still frequent my mind after all these years. It’s been too long.

Brava, meaning Brave in Spanish, probably earned the name for its temperamental currents and swells. Nestled within undeveloped hills and protected lands, Brava is disconnected from the tourist beach circuit allowing its endangered visitors, such as the sea turtles that nest here, a chance to get away from it all.

We leave our vehicle where the pavement ends and start heading downhill through the brush. The trail meanders through an overgrown forest following ruts the water leaves when it runs towards the beach after a hard rain. There is not much left of the trail I remember. Seventeen years ago this used to be an open and vehicle-wide rocky road that reached almost to the edge of the beach. Not anymore. All the years of unhindered vegetation growth have almost completely swallowed our way to Brava. We get to walk through tunnels of thick vegetation filled with curtains of red and green hanging vines and aerial roots that create a canopy offering protection from the sun, but not from the heat and humidity.

Earlier, a local had described Brava as a demanding beach when I mentioned where I was heading to. Well, you know what? So far I haven’t even seen it and I already feel that Brava has required a darn good effort from

me. Just like it did last time. But I am eager to make it there, not even the wasp nests that we encounter on the trail will deter me.

After an hour hike downhill we finally make it to the flats behind the beach dunes. There is a pond that has formed exactly where I had camped back in the day and has given life to a lush mangrove forest. The rain water that runs down the hills has accumulated here and mixed with water from the high swells that flood the beach sometimes during storms forming this pond. The organic matter of the forest paints the water dark red and brown and I am pleasantly surprised to see many fish in it. This kind of habitat of shallow waters and good canopy cover is ideal for wading birds and I am glad to see that it’s full of life.

Now engulfed by mangrove forest the smell of salty air is noticeable and we can hear the crashing surf, guiding us. The wave’s oceanic thunder is relaxed in timing but powerful on

delivery. We follow that sound instinctively and begin walking along the edge of the pond. We are heading towards the waves.

The trail leads to the eastern edge of Brava where the beach ends at an outcrop of large rocks where the hills meet the sea. Shades of intense blues and greens spread in front of us. The scenery is a perfect representation of what you imagine when thinking of a deserted tropical beach where the white foam of the crystal clear waves mixes with the sand under a blue sky with puffy white clouds and green hills as a background, like a perfect postcard. I settle under the same palm tree that is still here at the east end of the beach after all these years. From here I can see Brava in its entirety curving perfectly to my right and being pounded by the waves that give it its shape. There is no one to be seen. I’m glad we brought a lot of water and something to eat because I’m going to stay for a while. Finally, after seventeen years I made it back.

I should have not waited this long. It’s time to float in the ocean again, like those turtles.

Brava Diecisiete Años Después

El reto cuando uno vista Culebra es tratar de decidir a cual de todas las playas fantásticas de la Isla ir. Para ser una islita tan pequeña, las playas de Culebra tienen una gran variedad de características y particularidades. Pero estoy decidido a visitar Playa Brava esta vez. Brava es una playa aislada en la costa silvestre del norte de la Isla. La última vez que visité Brava fue hace diecisiete años para surfear con unos amigos y aunque visito Culebra frecuentemente, inexplicablemente, no había regresado. Por alguna u otra razón siempre termino flotando en otra de las hermosas playas de la Isla. Pero aun así las imágenes de Brava siempre me vienen a la mente aunque haya pasado tanto tiempo.

Brava quizás obtuvo su nombre por sus corrientes y mareas temperamentales. Localizada entre colinas silvestres sin desarrollar y tierras protegidas Brava esta desconectada del circuito turístico de playas. Esto permite a sus visitantes amenazados, como las tortugas marinas que anidan ahí, una oportunidad de estar alejados y aislados de todo.

Dejamos el carro donde termina el pavimento y comenzamos a adentrarnos en la vegetación. La vereda atraviesa un crecido bosque y sigue los surcos que deja el agua en su descenso a la playa cuando llueve fuerte. Ya no queda mucho del camino que yo recuerdo. Hace diecisiete años esto era un camino pedregoso por donde cabía un vehículo y llegaba casi hasta la playa. Ya no es así. Todos los años de crecimiento de vegetación han casi consumido nuestro paso a la playa. Más adelante atravesamos unos túneles de espesa vegetación que parecen ser adornados con cortinas de lianas verdes y raíces aéreas rojas que nos acarician en nuestro paso a la playa. La frondosidad del bosque nos protege del sol pero no del calor y la humedad.

Anteriormente una local me había descrito a Brava como una playa exigente cuando le mencioné hacia donde me dirigía. ¿Pues sabes qué? Ni siquiera he llegado, ni la he visto, y ya siento que Brava me ha requerido un tremendo esfuerzo, como lo hizo aquella vez. Pero estoy loco por llegar y nada me va a detener, ni los nidos de avispas con los que nos topamos en el camino.

Después de una hora de estar bajando por el monte llegamos al llano detrás de las dunas. Una laguna que se ha formado exactamente donde había acampado años atrás y ha dado vida a un espeso bosque de mangles. El agua de lluvia que baja por el monte se ha acumulado aquí y se ha mezclado con agua del mar que se adentra a veces durante las

tormentas y ha formado esta laguna. La materia orgánica del bosque le da al agua un color marrón rojizo y me sorprende ver un montón de peces en la laguna. Este hábitat de aguas llanas y tranquilas con buena cubierta de árboles es ideal para ciertas especies de aves zancudas y me alegra ver que está lleno de vida.

Desde el interior de los mangles ya se puede oler el aire salado y escuchar el estruendo del oleaje, guiándonos. Los truenos de la marea llevan un ritmo relajado pero una gran intensidad cuando revientan. Seguimos ese sonido instintivamente y caminando por la orilla de la laguna nos dirigimos hacia las olas.

La vereda nos lleva hasta la punta este de Brava donde la playa se encuentra contra los peñones donde termina el monte. Tonos de intensos azules y verdes se esparcen frente a nosotros. La escena es una representación perfecta de lo que uno se imagina cuando piensa en una playa tropical desierta donde la espuma de las olas se mezcla con la arena bajo un cielo azul con sus blancas nubes y un fondo de colinas verdes. Es una postal perfecta. Me siento bajo la misma palma que sigue en esta esquina después de todos estos años. Desde aquí puedo ver completamente a Brava curveando perfecta hacia la derecha y siendo embestida por las olas que le dan su forma. No se ve nadie. Me alegro haber traído tanta agua y algo de comer porque me voy a quedar un buen rato. Por fin, después de diecisiete años estoy aquí de nuevo. No debí haber esperado tanto tiempo. A flotar en el mar se ha dicho, como las tortugas.

AsociaciónEducativa

Algo que distingue a los culebrenses es su humildad, amabilidad y sentido de comunidad. Es que Culebra cuenta con la materialización de la palabra compromiso en la Asociación Educativa Pro Desarrollo Humano de Culebra.

Por mas de 25 años la Asociación ha mantenido su compromiso de ofrecer servicios para atender las necesidades de esta Isla y sus residentes. En el 1985, se establece la Asociación con el fin de atender a niños con necesidades especiales de la comunidad. La Sra. Marta Kaufman comenzó la iniciativa de brindar estos servicios de terapia y especialistas a niños con esas condiciones. Poco a poco se levantó el deseo de ayudar y poder satisfacer otras necesidades que se fueron identificando con el transcurso del tiempo. Después de 27 años, todavía se ve y siente la labor de la Asociación.

“Fuimos modificando los servicios de acuerdo a las necesidades de la comunidad. La Asociación viene siendo una agencia culebrense. Los pilares de esta agencia son personas culebrenses que desean lo mejor para su comunidad y sobretodo para nuestros niños. Le debemos las gracias a los que tienen el compromiso. Culebra necesita siempre una agencia que le brinde la misma oportunidad y ayuda que tenemos en el resto de los municipios de Puerto Rico.”

Es la realidad geográfica la que late constantemente y a la misma vez impulsa a siempre buscar iniciativas que promuevan un sano desarrollo entre los niños y la comunidad en general.

“Expandimos los servicios a madres que necesitaban que les cuidaran a sus niños, con la condición de que fueran a trabajar o a brindar algún servicio comunitario. Luego surgen otros proyectos como los campamentos de verano, uno en junio y otro en julio. Hacemos alianzas con otras agencias y especialistas para alguna necesidad particular de salud o necesidad especial de algún niño que el Departamento de Educación no cubra, como equipo médico. También brindamos el apoyo a las familias que reciben estas ayudas.”

Se crearon programas como los Sábados de Lectura donde los niños se enamoran de la lectura. Dado al éxito, se continuó con los Domingos de Lectura. Adicional, se orienta a las familias en toda la gama de conocimiento, desde presupuesto, cómo manejar un hogar con amor y cómo mantener el ambiente. Ofrecen donaciones de ropa, de efectos y equipo del hogar. Personas de la comunidad como Carmen Rosa Sabater, Luz Rivera, Diane Simard, Myriam Navarro, Iván Solís, Rubén Vargas entre otros, son algunos de los que han dado más que su tiempo y compromiso para mantener la labor de esta agencia.

Culebra always needs an agency that will provide the same opportunities and support that the rest of the municipalities of Puerto Rico have.”

The geographic reality is latent and it’s what drives them to always seek initiatives that promote healthy development among the children and the community at large.

“We expanded the services to mothers who needed to provide care for their children, with the condition that they work or provide some community service. Then, we came up with other projects such as summer camps, one in June and another in July. We partner with other agencies and specialists for any particular health need or special needs of a child that is not covered by the Department of Education, such as medical equipment. We also provide support for families receiving aid.”

They created programs like Sábados de Lectura (Reading Saturdays) where children learn to fall in love the reading. Given the success of it, they continued with Domingos de Lectura (Reading Sundays). Also, they provide guidance to families in all aspects of everyday life, from budgeting to how to develop a loving home and maintain a good environment. They offer donations of clothing, household appliances and equipment. People from the community like Carmen Rosa Sabater, Luz Rivera, Diane Simard, Myriam Navarro, Iván Solis, RubenVargas and others are some who have given more than their time and commitment to support the work of this Association.

During the life of the Association, people who have been the product of it are now part of it. They are people shaped with values that the Association strives to keep alive. They aim to do activities around them and maintain the clarity that characterizes them.
