TIME brings changes of all sorts— good , bad ,and indifferent . Happily, those it has wroughtin fishing-tackl e are var ious and important .The trade in it has greatly increased duringthe last twenty years , and the improvementsin its manufac tur e have more than kept pacewith augmented sale . My stock

,in the largevariety designated by the words “ fishingtackle,” has for its accommodation and dis playample and wel l-lit prem ises , that the purchas ermay be able to examine the workmanship ofeach art icl e, and that he may n ot b e hampered

,in order to insure a continuance of

,and carriedthe best of them into e ect . I have consultedthe best modern writers

,and advised with themost celebrated living fly-fishers, and the resultis that I have now an extensive collection of

fly-rods , for trout and salmon , made of the

In presenting the fol lowing C atalogue to theBrotherhood of A nglers

,I wish it to be wel lunderstood that its prices are for articles of thebest description , as all my rods and tackle aremanufactured on the premises, under my ownsuperintendence, to sui t the various purposesrequired

,and finished as they ought to be ; andthat they differ materially from the slop

rubbish vended by persons professing to bemakers, and sold to disappoin t, disgust, andtake in unwary purchasers , instead of takingout wary fish .I flatter myself that the quality of my stockwill speak for itself ; and, whilst doing so, takethe opportunity of respectfully inviting mybrother anglers to inspect it, convinced that inprice it is most economical

THE SA LMON.

IN S T R U C T IO N S

T H E YOU N G A N G L E R.

DESCRIPTION OF TA C$ LE.The ROD I should recommend for Fly-fishingfor Trout and Grayling is a 4-j oin t one ; buttash, middle pieces hickory, with a spl iced bamboo top ; the whole twelve feet long , graduallytapering from butt to top , with winch fittings ,rings not too small, of practical balance , andso not top-heavy .For Trolling or Spinning, use a bamboo orhickory rod, from 12 to 16 feet long , withupright rings , made strong and light, so as tocast the bait a long dis tan ce with ease .For Bottom-fishing from the bank

,a longhickory or bamboo rod, with various tops tosuit al l purposes.

Page 23: · PDF file" I I CHAR, FARLOW, Fi shing-Rod, Hook, Fly, Net, and Tackle Manufacturer, 1m, ST R A N D, OPPOSIT E 'r o SA INT C LEMEN T ’ S DAN ES T , EMPLE BA R , L

F or Punt-fishing use one about 10 feet long 0that wi ll strike well at the point. The W INCH I should advise would be aMultiplying Check , or plain multiplier for Flyfishing

,for Trout and Grayling ; to hold about

30 yards of line. For Trolling , a Plain Check constructed tohold about 60 yards of l ine .For Salmon , the same , to hold 100 yards .Let your winch b e full large in proportion tothe line

,or it will not wind up pleasantly. The Salmon rod should vary from 16 feet to

19 in length. Its butt should be of the lightestbest—grained and well-seasoned ash,its middlepieces of strong elastic hickory

,and its top oflancewood, terminating with bamboo-cane . Its

rings should be large and strong . A Salmonrod of three j oints, the top spliced

,suits pers on s living near Salmon rivers. The R UNNING LINE for Fly-fishingshould be made of good s ilk and horsehairplaited together ; at the end of which have aloop about half an inch long to fasten yourgut casting—line to $which should be about threeyards lon taper, and strong in proportion tothe size 0 the fish you expect to catch$; ateach end of the gut lin e you must have a loop,on e to slip your running line through , andanother at the fine end of the gut for attach ingthe fly link . This Operation is not easily explained by writing

,but 0 . Farlow will be gladto show his customers how it is to be done .

Page 24: · PDF file" I I CHAR, FARLOW, Fi shing-Rod, Hook, Fly, Net, and Tackle Manufacturer, 1m, ST R A N D, OPPOSIT E 'r o SA INT C LEMEN T ’ S DAN ES T , EMPLE BA R , L

The Trolling L ine should be made of plaiteds ilk, waterproofed, which , if well done, will

render it more durable than an other .FLOA TS are made in di erent wavs . Aporcupine’s quil l will answer very well for stil lwater,or where there is but littl e stream .

A cork float is preferable for Perch or Barbelfishing, and for the Thames generally. ForRoach, Dace, &o .

, you must always use as finea tipped cap float as the stream will suffer topass steadily along. I always use a tipped capoat, either of quil l or reeds , for Bottom-fishing .l ive-bait fishing for $ ack , then a large corkfloat is necessary, so that the bait may not beable to swim away in al l directions .The PLUMMET is a piece of lead

,cast witha ring at the t op, and some cork , to stick thepoint of the hook in

,at the bottom . W henused , place your float so that when y our plumbtouches the bottom , the top of the float m ay be,for lar e fish , two inches above the water ; forsmall sh , one inch. The HOO$ shoul d be in proport ion to thesiz e of the bait

,taking car e not to have it toolarge, or too long in the shank .The LINE in Bottom-fishing shoul d be threefeet from the surface of the water to the rod ,in order that you may not have too muchbetween the top of your rod and the float .The following articles will be found n e

THE PI$ E.

TROLLING F OR PI$ E .

The most easy and successful method is withthe gorge book . To use this you must have abaiting—needl e,which enter at the mouth ofthe bait, pass it al l through the body, and bringit out at the tail, dragging the gimp and hooks

thr ough till they meet the corners of the mouth .

Let the barbs point upwards, and then tie somethread round the tail to preven t its tearingwhen it catches the weeds ; now add this toyour trace

,and al l is ready. Having your baitprepared

,proceed to cast it forth into suchplaces as you think likely to contain a fish ,letting it dive to the bottom

,then draw it upgently, so as just to cause it to twirl round asit rises, l et it sink again and proceed as before, til l the l in e is close to you .

W hen you get a bite, which you will perceiveby the bait being suddenly pulled

point of your rod down , and with the left handkeep two or three yards of loose line ready , thatthe fish may not be checked when he runs . Ifhe lie stil l two or three minutes , shak e the line ,and run again

,you may wind in the loose lineand strike . W hen exhausted, l ead him to asuitable spot

,and l and him. Observe , whenthe pike is on the feed

,you can hardly lose himby any other means than by not giving himtime to pouch the bait.

The LIVE BA IT is used as follows : To twofeet of gimp, not too coarse, whip a rather finewired double book ; at the other end of thegimp make a small loop then pass one of thehooks between the skin and the flesh , close by,the front of the back fin. A newway of fish ing

with live bait is to place round the shoulders ofit an elastic , tight-fitting India ~rubber band, and in it affix the hook . By baiting in thisway , the live bait receives no injury. A singl ehook is used by passing it through the l ips ofthe bait

,or

,better

,beneath the skin

,close by

the bottom and side of the back fin.

Your float should be placed on your silk l in e,just above your shots or bullet,to keep the fishdown the gimp. The float

,of cork , should b every large , to keep the fish from the bottom. Many large pike are also taken with a live baitattached to a trimmer

,or large floating cork .

GENERAL REMAR$ S.

W indy weather $if from the west or south$suits both $ack and Perch , and they like thequiet parts of rivers. In $anuary and F ebruary $ ack and Pike are in pairs ; at whichtime

,if you take one , put on a fresh bait , andtry close by for the other. During these monthsthey feed eagerly ; and note this, a $ ack gene

rally takes a bait in his mouth across the body ,and always swal lows its head foremost. The TR OUT frequents the sharpest r iversnear waterfalls,mill-tails

, &c . , and feeds uponinsects , worms , flies , or smal l fish ; for methodof catching them

,see Fly-fishing , p . 23.

A more alluring bait canno t be had than theA rchim edian M innow, or my fl exibles .

PERCH are found in ponds and rivers , wherethey wil l grow to four or five pounds in weight .They are easily caught with a strong gut l ine,a cork float , and a No . 6 book , baited with aminnow or worm . You should fish in mod e

rately quiet parts, near fl ood-gates or millheads , where there is a gentle stream .

,you should use a ledger lead

,without the ledger lead .The CH U B , when small , strongly resemblesthe dace ; but as it grows larger, the head andmouth expand , by which it loses much of itsb eauty. The best bait during the winter is apiece of bullock ’s pilth or brains , or soft yellowcheese . In summer they rise eagerly at a fly.

You will then find them in deep quiet holesand under trees that overhang the water ; abum ble bee , large palmer, or, towards evening ,a wh ite moth
