Consequences of Human Trafficking

Human trafficking has some dastard consequences which affect both the victim and the society in general.1. Human trafficking results in breach of fundamental human rights of victims

and disregard for human dignity.2. Human trafficking can result in the death of the trafficked persons.3. Human trafficking can also engender exposure of victims to unnecessary

health hazards and destruction of vital organs in the body system.4. Human trafficking can equally result in increased restiveness and threat

against general peace of the society.5. Human trafficking portrays a bad image of any nation where it thrives

among the comity of nations.

GOVERNMENT AND INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS TO STOP HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Human trafficking is a heinous crime that needs serious attention by both government and individuals within the society. Efforts must be concerted and driven at combating this menace especially in the poverty-stricken localities where most people are falling victim of the nefarious activities of human traffickers.I. Government has been able to enact specific laws aimed at criminalizing human

trafficking . E.g. Trafficking in persons Prohibition Law, Act 2003.II. Establishment of relevant agencies such as NAPTIP saddled with responsibility of

curtailing human trafficking within the national territorial boundary.III. Education and sensitization programmes aimed at informing people on the

consequences and dastard effects of human trafficking. It equally ensures how stigmatization can be eradicated and effects properly managed as well as re-integration programme with empowerment projects.

IV. Prosecution and imprisonment of all convicted offenders and those who aid human trafficking.

V. Trans-border cooperation among neighbouring countries.Nigeria became a signatory to the Transnational Organised Crimes Convention and

Protocol on trafficking in persons on 13th December, 2000.At the level of individual and group especially the NGO’s efforts have been marshaled

at supporting government in the area of sensitization and re-integration programmes for victims of human trafficking especially those who are into prostitution.

The National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in persons and other related matters(NAPTIP)It was established on 26th August, 2003 under the Act 2003 Trafficking in persons Prohibition law enforcement and administration.Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF)It was established in 1999 by Chief (Mrs.) Aminat Titilayo Atiku Abubakar with the responsibilties of eradicating trafficking of women and child labour, organising enlightenment campaign and re-integration programmes as well as empowerment projects etc.
