What a week for Howe. The Bulldogs became front- runners in District 5-3A with their win over Gunter and snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Tigers that resided in three different decades. The marching band dominated in competition against much bigger schools. And to top things off, the city now is a shuttle home to the eighth largest food distributor in the country in Ben E. Keith Co. If there was still any lingeringfeelings of Howe being an underdogor a surprise team, that officiallyended Friday night with the winover Gunter. The transformation toa front-runner mentality will requirean entirely different attitude fromthe 'Dogs. Some teams handle thattransition well and others never canmake the adjustment. If there is anyindication that they will be able tohandle it, a glimpse could be seen inthe fourth quarter when Howeshutout Gunter and a punt and twoturnover on downs to secure thewin.

Gunter won the coin toss anddeferred to the second half. Howehad to punt on their firstpossession. After a short punt,Gunter took the ball at their own 46yard line. However, the Bulldogsforced a punt which turned into akey moment in the game. Gunterpunter Cameron Hearn tried to fielda bad snap that rolled back to him. While trying to field it, he went to aknee at the 17-yard line whichkilled the play and gave Howe theball at that spot.

Bulldogs

Grisham would score from 10yards out 2:04 minutes later andgive Howe the early 7-0 lead with6:14 left in the first quarter.

Gunter would start their nextpossession at their own 40 yardline and would drive the length ofthe field and even set up a first andgoal situation, but false startpenalties would force them into afourth and long and an attempt tothrow it in the end zone. That'swhen Nick Wilson intercepted hisfifth pass of the season at the goalline and run it out to the Howe 13.

Staring in to a decent north wind,Wilson would have another shortpunt that gave Gunter the ball atthe Howe 34. Two plays later, theTigers' freshman playmaker DylanJantz would score on a slot reverseon a 34-yarder to tie the game, 7-7with :54 left in the first quarter.

Howe had to punt again on theirnext possession where Gunter tookover at their own 47 yard line.Three minutes later, Howe forced

type of result could give theprogram the confidence to becomeHowe's fourth state champion.

"We won this competition and wewere very proud and excited toexcept the award but we accept itwith humility." said Ashlyn Ellis, captain of the color guard. "We allfeel very good about this year andthis competition just goes to show usthat hard work pays off. I believethat we have what it takes, we justneed to continue on the path wehave stared and finish it strong."

Band Director Angie Liss dodgedthe question of whether or not thisband was capable of winning state, however she is quite confident in herperformers. "I'm extremely proud ofhow hard the kids are working andeach performance is better than theone before. We all really love thisshow so we're having fun andlearning so much as we tweak andfine tune all aspects of it. Our

football crowd doesn't get to see itwith all the props and bells andwhistles since we only pull thoseout on turf fields but we're proudof the concept we've put togetherand anxious to see where we cango with it."

Award winning Drum MajorJessica Doty said, "A performancelike this weekend definitely givesyou confidence going into futurecompetition especially with UILstarting this week. A great run thisweekend was definitely needed asa confidence booster for everyone. We know we need to continue towork even harder to clean ourshow but this weekend shows howcapable our band is of achievingour goals and succeeding thisyear."

Great things could be in store in2015 as the band keepsprogressing each week. The Prideof Howe showed why on Saturday.

the Tigers in to a 4th and 7. Insteadof attempting a 50-yard field goalwith their big-legged kick Hearn,Gunter went for it and came upempty when quarterback Trey Carroverthrew his receiver which gaveHowe the ball at the Bulldog 32yard line. Jaden Matthews wastedno time by going the distance on a68-yard score on the first carry ofthe drive. Howe regained the lead,14-7 with 7:04 left in the secondquarter.

Gunter's next possession wouldstart at their own 37 yard line. After another 4-minute drive, Howewould force another turnover ondowns and would take the ball attheir own 33 yard line. Gunter'sdefense was impressive and forcedanother Howe punt. Gunter wouldstart their last possession of the firsthalf at their own 32 yard line, butwould run out of time and Howetook a 14-7 lead into the half.

Gunter would start the third quarterwith the ball at their own 42 yardline and were forced to punt. Aroughing the kicker penalty onHowe would give Gunter new life, but again, Howe would hold andforce another turnover on downs forthe third time after TannerHartsfield would make a stop on4th and 4.

Howe would take the ball at their

own 33 yard line, but a StrattonCarroll fumble would give Guntergreat field possession at theBulldog 33. Moments later, Jantzwould score for the second time, this one on a 15-yarder. Gunterwould try to take the lead with atwo-point conversion attempt, butTy Portman would bat down thepass and Howe maintained the lead,14-13. Perhaps, this is the momentHowe transformed to front-runners.

Howe's next possession resulted ina 62-yard touchdown by Matthewswhen Howe was facing a 2nd downand 21. The 'Dogs extended theirlead to 21-13 after Brice Honaker'sthird successful PAT.

Gunter would start at their own 40yard line with 3:19 left in the thirdquarter. Two minutes later, Carrwould carry it over from the 15yard line. Howe denied the 2-pointconversion and clung to a 21-19lead with 1:20 left in the third.

The fourth quarter was a defensivebattle with Howe punting twice,Gunter punting once. Anotherpossible front-runner transitionmoment came with 5:50 left whenBulldogs Head Coach Zack Hudson(aka the Riverboat Gambler) wentfor it on 4th and 2 and calledGrisham's number, who got justenough to keep the drive alive andHudson came up with aces once

again. That kept the ball out ofGunter's hands for three moreminutes before punting and pinningGunter deep at their own 15 yardline.

The game fell in the hands of theBulldog defense to turn back Gunterwith only 3:04 left in the game. With Jantz out of the game due toinjury, Gunter laid all of their hopeson the back of their quarterbackCarr. Howe linebacker JacobTaylor would sack Carr on a blitzand force Gunter to take a timeoutfrom their own 19 yard line with2:28 left. After the timeout, Carrwould have to fall on the ball after abad shotgun snap and that forced a3rd and 25 with the clock rollingunder two minutes. Carr's thirddown pass fell incomplete. Wilsonnearly picked off Carr's fourth down

heave to seemingly secure the win.

Howe's last possession was allabout killing the clock, however,Gunter would get one chance towin the game with four secondremaining. Carr would completethe pass, but the 'Dogs defensestopped the receiver at midfield andthe front-runner transformation hadcompletely taken place.

Matthews led the 'Dogs with 149yards on 8 carries and 2touchdowns. Grisham added 33yards on 11 carries and one TD.Others were Carroll (8-23),Brandon Wall (4-28), BrentMasters (6-18) and Cooper Akins(1-3).

Howe will travel to Tom Bean nextFriday seeking 6-1 and 2-0.

His word to be hidden in everypart of you. I had someone askme on Facebook one time, “Doyou have a cross in your pocket?”I answered, “Wow! Thank you,yes I do and thank you for thecompliment!” I don’t literallyhave a cross in my pocket but it’san old saying that means someonepoints everything back to God andHis teachings in the Bible.

“Wisdom shouts in the streetswherever crowds gather. Sheshouts in the marketplaces andnear the city gates as she says tothe people, ‘How much longer willyou enjoy being a fool? Won’tyou ever stop sneering andlaughing at knowledge? Listen asI correct you and tell you what Ithink.” Proverbs 1:20-23.Wisdom is not politically correct.

Wisdom cries out for the Truth to beheard. Wisdom loves God’s peopleenough to speak correction evenwhen it’s not popular. Wisdom isexpressing the Truth that freespeople from their bondages.Wisdom is expressing the truth ofGod’s love even when it’suncomfortable.

If you do not have a Bible pleasecontact me at [email protected] I will provide you one.

From these,an ordinary person can learn to besmart, and young people can gainknowledge and good sense. If youare already wise, you will becomeeven wiser. And if you are smart, you will learn to understandproverbs and sayings, as well aswords of wisdom and all kinds ofriddles,” Proverbs 1:2-6.

I need wisdom and I sure needself-control. I desperately want tounderstand the meaning of God’sword more tomorrow than I dotoday. I want to be able to discernwhat is right, honest and fair aboutevery situation according to howGod sees it. I’m just an ordinaryperson that needs to learn. I wantmore wisdom and I’m horriblewith riddles! That pretty muchsums it up…Next! “Respect andobey the Lord! This is thebeginning of knowledge. Only afool rejects wisdom and goodadvice,” Proverbs 1:7. So, I haveto respect and obey the Lord if Iwant wisdom and knowledge. That’s good advice and the Bible

says that only a fool will reject itand my momma didn’t raise no fool.

I love Proverbs. This book is acollection of sayings that was usedto teach Gods people how to liveright. I love the poetry of Psalmsand Proverbs. A typical proverb isshort and to the point. “My child, obey the teachings of your parents, and wear their teachings as youwould a nice hat or a prettynecklace,” Prov. 1:8-9. The Bibletells parents to teach their childrenthe ways of the Lord. The Bibletells children to obey what theirparents taught them openly for all tosee and admire. Cool hats andpretty necklaces are not worn inprivate. They’re fashion statementsand speaks volumes to yourlifestyle. Kids, wear yourChristianity boldly. Show up topassing period Bible studies. Pickother Christians as your friends. Goto “See You At The Poles” and prayboldly for your school. Invite otherkids to church. Be kind and pure atheart. Let all your words honorGod.

“You shall love the LORD yourGod with all your heart and with allyour soul and with all your might. And these words that I commandyou today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently toyour children, and shall talk of themwhen you sit in your house, andwhen you walk by the way, andwhen you lie down, and when yourise. You shall bind them as a signon your hand, and they shall be asfrontlets between your eyes. Youshall write them on the doorposts ofyour house and on your gates,”Deuteronomy 6:5-9. Do you loveGod that way? Your heart can’thide what’s inside it; it alwaysshows up sooner or later; good orbad. Do you love God with all yoursoul; your mind, your will and youremotions? Do you put all yourefforts to love Him like He lovesyou? If you do then you’ll desire

The key has been the symbol of mysticalcharm since Biblical times. The CatholicChurch has keys in its coat of arms and duringthe Middle Ages noblemen and women carrieda large collection of keys hanging from theirgirdles to denote status—the more keys thehigher the status. The custom of grantingpresentation keys began during the earliestyears when cities were walled enclaves. Whena visitor was held in high esteem by thetownspeople, he would be presented with agold-plated key to the city gate. Thus, we nowhave the honorary “Key to the City.” Keys tothe city are now made of wood, plastic, potmetal, or even cardboard.

Ancient Egyptian locks, made of wood andfitted to the outside of the door, took the formof a wooden bar that slid sideways through alarge wooden staple and into a cavity in thedoorjamb. The keys were large, woodentoothbrush-looking devices with the “bristles”being pegs corresponding to the staple. TheRomans developed a smaller iron lock withbronze keys.

Keys made in the Middle Ages were veryrough and crude with the bows fashioned intolozenge shapes and crosses. Some Medievalkeys will be found with rough designs, crests, crowns or other ornamentation on the bows.

Locksmith’s apprentices demonstrated their

Learn about antiques and collectibleswith Georgia Carawayskill and qualifications to become masterlocksmiths by executing the intricate designsof locks and keys for four or more years.Upon acceptance the new master locksmithcould set up his own shop and employapprentices.

Keys of the 18th and 19th centuries were pre-mechanization. Most keys of this period haveelaborate bits (the end that is inserted into thelock). Many of these keys have designs cutinto the bits; the cross, crowns, initials, andother types of designs in about everycombination. The bows (the top of the keystem) run from plain iron rings to elaboratelycut designs.

Key collecting is such a diversified hobbythat few collectors today would attempt toacquire extensive holdings of all the varioustypes. Collectors usually followspecialization in one or two main types.

Among the most popular of the twentieth-century keys is the railroad switch key. Therewere thousands of railroads over the past 170years or so, and most issued switch keys.Other types of collectible keys are foldingkeys for pocket doors, ship keys, watch keys, hotel keys, car keys, casket keys, furniturekeys, and door keys.

Jail keys are probably the most difficult of allkeys to acquire. Few people outside ofprisons really know what a jail key looks like.Old Western jails, what few there were, mostly used hasps and padlocks. A specialpadlock was designed specifically for thesejails. It was small, secure, and light enough tobe shipped the long distance from the Easternmanufacturers. The keys are unique anddifficult to duplicate. Local blacksmiths

made the early Western jail cells of the materials athand, as the cost of shipping a manufactured cellfrom the East was beyond the resources of mostsmall towns. The lock was a lever tumbler type, not a warded lock. Almost all gate keys have wardcuts or curved bits, to fit specially cut keyholes.During the latter part of the 19th century, and untilthe middle of the 20th, manufacturers did make jaillocks that used bit-type keys, single as well asdouble-bitted. Many jail keys were large flat keysthat resemble an overgrown safe deposit key, withmany square cuts along the edge. Some jail keyshave the cell number as part of the edge cut toindicate the cell the prisoner was residing in.

Jack January

In March of last year my oldest sonand I went to the boys' statebasketball tournament in Austin. Itis something he and I look forwardto every year...because it is threedays of nothing but basketball, basketball, and more basketball.

Each day was divided into threeseparate sessions for the differentclassifications of schools. At thebeginning of each session a JROTCgroup from a local high schoolwould serve as Color Guard. Asthey entered the arena folks lazilygot out of their seats; most (not all)removed a hat they wore and placedtheir hand over their heart. Theystood as the National Anthemplayed and then quickly resumedthe conversation they were havingas they sat back down.

On Friday evening I, and the peoplearound me, were treated tosomething a little different. As theColor Guard walked onto the flooran elderly gentleman eight rows infront of Elijah and I quickly stoodup, snapped to "attention," andpositioned his right arm in amasterful salute. Meanwhile the restof the crowd (myself included)went through its normal routine. Atthe completion of the NationalAnthem, everyone sat backdown...except for two people...

My son...and Sergeant JackJanuary.

I looked at Elijah - he looked backat me and said, "I'm watching thatguy - he looks like he knows what

he's doing." So I, ashamedly, stoodback up until the flag and itsuniformed escort left the arena. At halftime I went down andintroduced myself to the KoreanWar veteran and told him howmuch I appreciated his example. His response to me was simple: "Ilove that flag, sir."

Five observations:

1) If my calculations are right,Sergeant January has to be in hismid-80’s. It's not every day an 80-year old man calls me "sir"...butwhen it comes to rules on mannersand etiquette, I will always defer toa Veteran.

2) If I ever have to go undercoveras a secret agent and need an alias,I'm calling myself "Jack January."

3) Our kids are watchingEVERYTHING that goes onaround them. I pray that there are aplethora of positive examples thatmy children see everyday...ESPECIALLY in thosemoments when I under-achieve asa man/citizen/Christian.

4) When something preciousentered the room – something heloved dearly – Sgt Jack Januarygave it the honor and respect itdeserved. He was not distracted bythe people around him who seemedto care very little about thepresence of Old Glory. Instead hefixed his eyes on the thing that heloved. Hebrews 12:2 implores,“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, theauthor and perfecter of our faith...”If an old soldier gives that sort ofrespect to a piece of fabric thatrepresents freedom...how muchmore should we, as children of TheKing, pay double the homage tothe one that represents an evengreater freedom...caring not thatthe world around us shouts usdown and thinks us silly, foolish ormisguided.

5) Did I mention that Jack JanuaryMIGHT just be the coolest nameever???

Battleship USS Texas

The twentieth century became thegreat age for the battleship asnavies around the world raced tobuild the most powerful vessels onthe seas. As the United Statesestablished itself as a worldpower, the nation was determinedto show the strength of its ownnavy. As a result, the BattleshipUSS Texas, designated BB-35,was built as the second vesselnamed for the state by the USNavy.

Construction on the Texas, a NewYork-class battleship, began in1911 at a cost of over $5.8 million(nearly $140 million in 2015dollars). It was commissioned inMay 1914. The 573-foot vesselboasted a crew of more than onethousand men. It included tenfourteen-inch guns, twenty-onefive-inch guns, and foursubmerged torpedo launchers. Itsfirepower easily matched the mostpowerful ships in the world at thetime.

During most of America’sinvolvement in World War I, theTexas was attached to the Britishfleet patrolling the waters near

Scotland and spent the interwaryears as part of the navy’s PacificFleet. In 1919, just after the warended, it made naval history as itbecame the first battleship tolaunch an airplane off its deck. The successful experiment was acritical part of the navy’s tests ofthe viability of aircraft carriers andtheir potential designs as airplanesbecame more reliable instrumentsfor reconnaissance and combat.

The Texas spent most of the earlyyears of World War II on convoyescort duty, protecting trooptransports and supply ships fromthe German submarine attacks thathad devastated the Allies. InOctober 1942, the ship served aspart of the fleet transportingAmerican troops to North Africaas part of Operation Torch, thefirst landing of American troopsagainst the Nazis.

On June 6, 1944, the Allies stagedOperation Overlord, the invasionof Normandy, and the Texas wasthere, its guns pounding Nazipositions along the coast. Theship stayed along the coast ofnorthern France for several weeks, aiding American troops as theystruggled to move inland.

As the Allies retook Europe, theUSS Texas was sent to the Pacificin early 1945. In February andMarch, the Texas supportedground troops landing at Iwo Jimaas American forces advancedtoward the Japanese home islands.Beginning in April, the ship waspart of the six-week naval

bombardment campaign as Americantroops struggled to gain control ofOkinawa. The capture of bothislands was essential to forcing Japanto surrender, which occurred fourmonths later. After the end of thewar, the Texas spent the last fewmonths of its career bringing troopsback home.

The Texas was decommissioned in1946, along with many other storiedvessels from both world wars. Theship, however, was given a nobleretirement by the people of the state. On April 20, 1948, it waspermanently docked in LaPorte nearthe San Jacinto Battleground StateHistoric Site to begin operating as amuseum, allowing the general publicto explore the ship for themselves. The arrangement was the first of its

for a battleship and was wildlypopular with the public.

While protected from the ravages ofbattle today, the ship still suffersfrom the corrosive effects ofweather and the sea which haspresented long-term issues for itspreservation. The Battleship TexasFoundation has for years raisedmoney to support maintenance andeducation efforts in coordinationwith the Texas Parks and WildlifeDepartment. Nevertheless, thousands of visitors from aroundthe world still come each year toexplore the legendary vessel.
