The Endocrine System
Parts of the Endocrine System
Hormones makes your body change during puberty Hormones are chemical substances produced
in certain glands that help to regulate the way your body functions. They are produced by organs of the endocrine
system Endocrine System is the system of glands
throughout the body to regulate body functions.
Glands and Hormones
Each gland makes one or more specific hormones
Hormones act like chemical signals They tell your organs and tissues what to do
A major role of the endocrine system is to control metabolism Metabolism is the process by which the body
gets energy from food.
Parts of the Endocrine System
Parathyroid Glands- regulate levels the calcium in the blood
Pituitary Gland- regulates body’s growth and development.
Thyroid gland- controls rate of metabolism. Adrenal Glands- controls the body’s response to
emergencies and excitement Pancreas- controls the level of sugar in the blood. Ovaries- controls sexual development and the
maturing of eggs Testes- controls sexual development and the
production of sperm.
Diseases of the Endocrine System
Diseases develop if there is too much or too little of a hormone produced
Diabetes is a major disease It is when the body doesn’t produce enough of
the hormone called insulin Or doesn’t respond to the insulin that is produced.
Insulin lowers the amount of sugar in the blood People with diabetes have too much sugar in the blood
If not managed well people can suffer from Poor circulation, nerve damage, heart disease,
kidney failure, or blindness
DIABETES
TYPE 1 TYYPE 2
Germ fighting cells attack the cells of the pancreas
Pancreas makes insulin
Body doesn’t produce enough insulin Too much sugar in the blood
People must inject themselves with insulin on a regular basis
Not doing so can lead to coma or death
A person can produce insulin, but the body can’t use it well. Usually develops in adulthood
Common in people who are overweight People feel tired and sick to
their stomachs People with type 2 diabetes
need to watch their diet and exercise regularly.
Thyroid Disease
This will effect metabolism If the gland doesn’t make enough hormones to
regulate metabolism you can develop hypothyroidism You will feel tired, cold, dry skin and gain extra
weight Can delay growth in teens
A thyroid replacement hormone can treat people with hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is the opposite of hypothyroidism
Thyroid produces too many hormones Excessive sweating, excessive eating, weight loss,
tremors, and muscle weakness.
