We are just now at the commencement of a New Year,

a fresh and a new period in time. A year in our life has passed and let us all reflect what virtuous qualities we have developed in the year that has just passed out. In what respects were there set-backs in our Sadhana? Let us analyse, analyse without the least trace of the tendency to self-justification, as critically as we would analyse others; for we are doing this for our own improvement; for our own good. Then, let us enter the New Year with a fresh, firm determination, to avoid the mistakes of the past year, and to make rapid progress in our efforts to lead a virtuous and righteous living.

The New Year is a new birth for you; let not past mistakes and failings dishearten you, but let them goad you to greater and greater effort to achieve the goal. The last year has passed; this year is in your hands. Make the best use of it. By the Grace of the Merciful Lord, the year is out, you must make more effective efforts to realise the Ultimate Truth that will give you eternal happiness.

Time is fleeting. This is one of the truths that the New Year brings into focus. It is the

supreme factor of the passage of time. It tells us: “O Man, Awake! Realise that you may be standing still due to your neglect, but life does not stand still. Life is rushing onward like a swift stream. Even as the thought is entering your mind, time has passed. That is what the chime of every clock at the end of every hour reminds man that so much less of time you have in your hands; utilise it for your welfare. Awake, arise, be up and doing. Do not stop until you have crossed time and made yourself timeless. We should, therefore, alert ourselves to earnestly take to the spiritual practice, so that we may attain the Supreme Purpose for which the precious gift of human life has been bestowed upon us.

Once having become aware that time is passing away, we will understand that every period in time is a thing not for rejoicing, but for very serious heart-searching repentance, new resolutions for enthusiastic onward progress; unlike the ignorant father or mother who, seeing the child grow up, rejoices that a new birthday has come and gives it lots of presents. What a depth of ignorance! They do not understand that every year of the

child’s growth means a shortening of its life to that extent. The Viveki - Purusha (a man of discrimination) keeps before him, when he arrives at these periodical markings upon the field of time, this ideal of the factor of the passing of time. When this factor is brought to one’s consciousness, one realises that there is a very real reason why we should do something about it.

This conception brings up to another important point that we have to remember, viz., that we should never lose opportunities. Make the best of every opportunity that God gives to you in His love and mercy. An opportunity once lost is lost forever. When God has given us this great opportunity of opportunities, this human birth, for achieving the greatest thing that can ever be achieved, viz. the imperishable treasure of everlasting, infinite, bliss and peace, it should not be lost. At the same time life if fickle. Just as a drop of water put upon a white-hot iron disappears even without leaving a trace or semblance of it behind, even so this life is an appearance for a fleeing moment in eternity, and it at once disappears without any trace at all. Opportunities do not come again. Knowing that the chance given to us is rushing towards its end, the sages cry out from house-tops; “Awake, arise, stop not till the goal is reached, - do not be immersed in this world of pain, disappointment, grief, disease and death.”

Therefore, these great ones with their hearts throbbing with love for human beings wish to share that experience with us. This is an opportunity for attaining Immortality, and therefore they say: “Be up and doing in Yogic Sadhana. You will attain Kaivalya Moksha”. We should heed this message in the New Year and make the best use of this rare human birth. Have thoughts such as:

“Why have I taken this birth here? What is the meaning and purpose of life? How to achieve that purpose? I must achieve it”. These thoughts do not arise in the ordinary mind that is outgoing. Only in the blessed mind, where the light of the Lord’s Grace has reached and penetrated the darkness of grossness, do these thoughts arise.

How great is the ignorance of the ordinary man of the world! Days and nights pass away, months pass away, years pass away and with these, one’s life is passing away. Yet there is the clinging to life due to ignorance, due to man’s not knowing that this life is transient. He laments, suffers and yet he clings to it. Therefore, this state of awakened Viveka (discrimination) itself is a mark of Grace. Let us not prove unworthy of this gift of Grace, which the Lord has given to us in the form of Viveka.

Let us offer our adorations for the great message that time has given us today and is giving everyday; with sunrise it gives the message of the day that is born and with sunset it gives the message of the day that is past. We should not be asleep; we should be vigilant. Let us hearken to the message of the Lord in the form of fleeting Time! May the New Year bring to all mankind peace, joy, prosperity and the best of everything here and Eternal Happiness hereafter.

Siva Tattva

Salutations to Lord Siva, the vanquisher of Cupid, the bestower of

eternal bliss and immortality, the protector of all beings, the destroyer of sins, the Lord of the gods, who wears a tiger-skin, the best among objects of worship and through whose matted hair flows the Ganges.

Lord Siva is the pure, changeless, attributeless, all-pervading transcendental consciousness. He is the inactive (Nishkriya) Purusha. Prakriti is dancing in his breast and performing the creative, preservative and destructive processes.

When there is neither light nor darkness, neither form nor energy, neither sound nor matter, when there is no manifestation of phenomenal existence, Siva alone exists in Himself. He is timeless, spaceless, birthless, deathless and decayless. He is beyond the pairs of opposites. He is the Impersonal Absolute Brahman. He is untouched by pleasure and pain, good and evil. He cannot be seen by the eyes but He can be realised within the heart through devotion and meditation.

Siva is also the Supreme personal God when He is identified with His power. He is the omnipotent, omniscient active God. He dances in supreme joy and creates, sustains and destroys with the rhythm of his dancing movements.

He destroys all bondage, limitation and sorrow of His devotees. He is the giver of Mukti or the final emancipation. He is the universal Self. He is the true Self of all creatures. He is the dweller in the cremation ground – in the region of the dead, those who are dead to the world.

Man, the son of Sakti, encased as he is in the meshes of matter and made to move by the vast world-energies, conceals in himself, the Soul of Siva. Man, Sakti and Siva, or, reversing the order, God, World and Man – these three that are three distinct things, three separate entities for human experience, from the human stand point in ignorance – are in intuitive experience, the one single Reality, the one indivisible Truth.

Though fallen, as a result of the operative

logic of the powers of Self-ignorance, world-ignorance and ignorance concerning the Divine Being, into this field of physical life of limitations, failure, frustration, disaster and death, Man when he resorts to aspiration and self-discipline, is carried back, by the blessing of the Divine Lord, beyond the border-lines of this life of limitations and lamentations. The silent Siva, by a mere look, leads and lifts man out of his present predicament of finitude. If man is subject to Death, Siva is the Lord of Death; if man falls asleep with the fall of night, Siva is the Lord of night. Night and death may sway man; but they have no power over Siva. Siva is the devourer of Death – Mrityunjaya; Siva is Yogeshvara – the Lord of Yoga; Siva is Digambara – the Lord of mendicants and monks, eternally free, eternally reposed in the Delight of Being, Sivananda. Siva bestows immortality on man. Siva is the dispeller of the darkness of the night of depression and misfortune that dogs the footsteps of man. Siva is our Saviour.

At the end of Pralaya, the supreme Lord thinks of re-creation of the world. He is then known by the name Sadasiva. He is the root-cause of creation. From Sadasiva creation begins. In Manusmriti He is called Svayambhu. Sadasiva is unmanifested. He destroys the Tamas caused by Pralaya and shines as the self-resplendent light bringing forth the five great elements etc., into being.

The Siva Purana says that Siva is beyond both Prakriti and Purusha. Siva is the Mahesvara. He is the witness, well-wisher and nourisher of all beings.

Mahesvara conducts the work of creation according to His will and pleasure. The Sruti says: “Mayam tu Prakritim Viddhi Mayinam tu Mahesvara,” – “know Prakriti to be Maya and Mahesvara to be the wielder of Maya.” The Sakti of Siva works in two different ways – Mula Prakriti and Daivi Prakriti. Mula Prakriti is Apara Prakriti from which the five elements and other visible objects and the Antahkarana are evolved. Para Prakriti is Chaitanya Sakti which converts the Apara Prakriti and gives name and form to it. Apara

Prakriti is Avidya and Para Prakriti is Vidya. The controller and dispenser of these two Prakritis is Lord Siva. Siva is distinct from Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra.

Lord Siva is the Lord of innumerable crores of Brahmandas and universes. Isvara united with maya gives rise to Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra, out of Rajas, Sattva and Tamo Gunas respectively under the command of Lord Siva. Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra are the trinities of the world. There is no difference among the trinities. By the command of Mahesvara these three do the creative, preservative and destructive duties of the world. The work of all the three deities is done conjointly. They all have one view and one definite purpose in creating, preserving and destroying the visible universe of names and forms. He who regards the three deities as distinct and different, the Siva Purana says, is undoubtedly a devil or evil spirit.

The Lord who is beyond the three Gunas, Mahesvara, has four aspects: viz., Brahma, Kala, Rudra and Vishnu. Siva is the support for all the four. He is the substratum for Sakti also. Siva is distinct from Rudra included in the trinities. Rudra is really one though, according to the different functions, he is considered to have eleven different forms.

The first face of Siva does Krida or play, the second does penance, the third destroys or dissolves the world, the fourth protects the people and the fifth being knowledge fully covers the entire universe by its power. He is Isana, the creator and promoter of all beings from within. The eight forms of Siva are Sarva, Bhava, Rudra, Ugra, Bhima, Pasupati, Lsana and Mahadeva, respectively rooted in earth, water, fire, air, ether, Kshetrajna, sun and moon.

Uniting the Self with the true Siva Tattva by the control of the senses is real wearing of Bhasma, because Lord Siva through His third eye of wisdom burnt passion to ashes. The meditation of Pranava should be done through Japa. One should attain real Jnana, Yoga and Bhakti by steady practice. In the heart there is a ten-petalled lotus. It has ten

5

Nadis. It is the Jivatma’s abode. This Jivatma lives in the subtle form in the mind and it is Chit or Purusha itself. One should ascend to the moon by cutting open or transcending the Dasagni Nadi by the regular practice of Yoga as instructed by the Guru and practicing dispassion, righteousness and equality.

The moon then gradually attains fullness, as it gets itself pleased with the Sadhaka on account of his regular application in Yoga and purification of Nadis. In this state, the Sadhaka overcomes waking and sleeping states and through meditation merges himself in the object meditated upon in this waking state itself.

Sivaratri is a unique and the only non-festive festival fraught, for the intelligence of the aspiring and awakened individual, with a high spiritual import and significance. We miss here the colour and dance of Holi and the mirth and light of Deepavali. It is a festival, a joyous occasion not to those who would turn merchants, not to those who would find themselves hailed as the leaders of the common crowds, but to the bold heroes, the brave knights who would neither eat, nor rest, nor play, nor sleep, until they conquer Night and Death, until they grow into the Light of the Lord, the Lord before whose infinite brilliance all our lights flicker and fade.

Sivaratri persuades us to defy night and demands of us devotion to Siva, the Embodiment of Truth and Beauty – Satyam and Sundaram. This festival provides man an empirical opportunity to stage a mock-suzerainty of the Spirit over Matter, of Day over Night, or Self-sufficiency over selfish dependence. It is a festival of self-denial, self-sacrifice and self-surrender; it tests man’s manliness and manhood and promotes him

into being a Power and Guide to the faltering and floundering humanity, to a world groping in darkness.

This is the day when man must make genuine spiritual efforts to master himself, to rule himself, and therefore, to rule the world, rule all Nature, to rend asunder his epidermis, his outer personality, his outward nature formed by Ignorance, be wide awake in all his being, reconstruct himself and by the intensity of his aspiration, his spiritual disciplines, bring upon himself the redeeming, the liberating action of the Divine Grace, and assert, ‘Sivoham’- ‘I am Siva’. It is then that man would be no more a mere creature of Nature, arrogating to itself Titanic powers but seeking day, a day of the most exalted and fruitful activity, a delightful discipline that creates the conditions for the realization of the Lord, of Siva as what He is, Sivam, all-auspiciousness, Satyam, all truth, Sundaram, all-beauty.

On this auspicious day, O seekers, starve out the forces of ignorance and darkness, seek no compromise with any form of weakness, with limitations, with anything finite and perishing. Worship the Lord in truth and in spirit. Resolve today to put persistently into practice the super scientific wisdom presented to us in the Yoga Scriptures. Grow graceful, increase your intellectual powers, widen your hearts, expand your inner consciousness and release your psychic powers into beneficial activity. Even a faint experience of the Divine Being in its essential Nature, as Light, Love, Delight, Truth or Beauty, would raise you to the status of gods, and enable you to live like Lords, for ages to come, in the heart of all humanity!

May the Grace of Lord Siva be ever upon you all !

Sivaratri As Observed By Gurudev. On Sivaratri (a day sacred to Lord Siva) he wouldn’t eat at all and would keep awake the whole night while worship in the temple was going on. He would sit next to the pillar on the left near the temple and while all the others were shouting, he would chant very quietly, “Om Namah Sivaya” with closed eyes and a deep voice. (Only he could do that- others would go off to sleep!) He was the one who managed to sit continuously, and he hardly ever got up from that seat from 9pm to about 3am.

You are imperishable Divine Spirit, beyond body and mind. God is the source of your being and you are inseparable from Him in your inner nature. Despite wealth and opulence there is no peace in the 20th century mankind. Man is in a state of restlessness and insecurity and there is discord and disharmony in the world.

Holy Master Swami Sivananda out of great love and compassion showed modern man the path to blessedness in and through Divine Life right here in this world. We are only passing pilgrims here. Due to the force of Karma we have temporarily come into this state of physical embodiment as a rare, golden opportunity to once again regain our lost connection with that Universal Being which is our source.

We must strive for Moksha – liberation from pain, sorrow and suffering and for the attainment of eternal bliss. Gurudev showed mankind an easy path even while fulfilling one’s obligations in the world in and through secular life.

Divine Life means living in the awareness that you are essentially divine; that your real being is the timeless, eternal immortal Soul. God is the basis and goal of all religions, despite their different names. That Supreme Cosmic Reality remains one and non-dual regardless of the place of worship and it is the same One glorified in all the world scriptures. Divine Life proclaims that the goal of life is God-Realisation.

You need not renounce the world to lead a Divine Life, because even while living your

normal domestic, professional and social life you can attain your goal. First, you must purify your heart through individual service to others. Be ever eager to serve all – the sick, the poor, the suffering and sorrowful. Feel blessed at every opportunity to serve your fellow beings and all of God’s creatures on Planet Earth. From this motiveless selfless service comes a pure heart, which in turn brings devotion to God.

Secondly, worship the Supreme daily, for God is the centre of your existence. He is not far away from you but is the ever-present Divine Spirit pervading this entire Universe. He is closer to you than your very breath. Never forget this. Out of a heartfull of love for Him try to re-establish your relationship of spiritual love with God. This process of daily worship and prayer has the power to gradually steady the restless mind, to overcome its fickle nature and bring concentration.

Thirdly, practice the withdrawal of the mind, controlling the senses and thoughts and meditate upon that Supreme Divine Reality. Devotion and prayer create an upward ascent in your life and you enter into daily meditation which brings about steadiness. You begin to FEEL the presence of God in your heart so that even as you are engaged in daily activities, meditation creates an unbroken current of God-awareness. You begin to KNOW that you live, move and have your being in God. Meditation brings a spiritual quality into your life which lifts you to new standards of purity, kindness and wholeness. You become a transformed spiritual being with lofty thoughts and sublime sentiments.

Fourth, having entered into this state of God-awareness, your intellect becomes purified. Philosophical enquiry and discrimination dawn between the permanent and the passing, the eternal and the non-eternal. This discrimination should be carried on every hour of your waking life. You then

begin to reject that which is unspiritual and to direct your mind toward the Reality behind and beyond this world-play. Your mind begins to move towards the Eternal Reality, even though you continue to function in this phenomenal world. You become established in that Supreme Divine Reality.

Ceaselessly inquire: “Who am I? Whence have I come into this universe? What is my goal? What is the nature of all these sense objects?”

Affirm: “I am NOT this body, nor the mind and the limited, finite intellect. I am unborn, deathless, eternal Atman – Satchidananda!”

If you wish to enter into Divine Life you have to observe three principles of conduct and character in your day-to-day living in the secular world.

They are indispensable requirements which form the foundation and basis of a Divine Life of service, worship, meditation and God-Realisation. They are:

1. Kindness and compassion towards all in thought, word and deed. This is Ahimsa or non-injury. Be a cosmic benefactor, having ceaseless love for all, even to the least of God’s creatures. Be a centre of peace and happiness to all.

2. Be rooted in absolute truthfulness, even at the cost of your life. Absolute honesty and integrity for Truth is God. One established in Truth can attain God.

3. Purity of conduct and character, self-restraint, chastity and purity of feeling for all people; the overall control of the base aspects of your being.

Ever keep your mind on the supreme goal. Have absolute faith in your connection with God. See His invisible presence in and through all things in and around you, for He is present in all creation.

Many of you, as spiritual seekers, would be practicing Japa-

Sadhana. When you were initiated you would have been told that you should do Japa, chanting of the Divine Name. Tat Japah Tadarthabhavanah – the recitation, chanting or Japa of the Mantra is to be accompanied by a contemplation on its import or meaning. As a matter of fact, Japa, according to Patanjali, is not merely a mechanical chanting of the Name, though chanting is also Japa, but it is Tadartha Bhavana or the contemplation on the meaning of the Mantra. To give an instance, “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”

made to manifest in the Mantra. When you chant a Mantra correctly and systematically with proper intonation, there is immediately set up a vibration in the nervous system in such a manner that a harmony is established in the whole world. Different Mantras produce different vibrations and they invoke different Devata. ‘Om namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’ is a Mantra of Bhagavan Sri Krishna. It means literally: ‘Om, prostration to Bhagavan Vasudeva’. Surrender to Sri Vasudeva is implied therein. Now, the prostration, salutation, is an external symbol of the internal union. When we do ‘Namaskara’ to a

is a Mantra. Chanting this is Japa. There is external verbal Japa, as well as internal Manasika Japa, or mental Japa. Japa is the repetition of a Mantra, which is a mysterious group of letters or phrases so connected with one another that when the Mantra is chanted a peculiar sensation or vibration is generated in the entire system. That is the difference between the ordinary words or sentences or groups of phrases and a Mantra. A Mantra is the result of a vision of a seer and it is the concrete manifestation, in the world of language, of the deity or Devata, which is

deity in the temple, to a friend or any person, we join both the palms and bend ourselves low. This Namaskara, and the joining of the palms, is indicative of the feeling of union of oneself with the other. ‘I and you are one’; that is prostration, that is Namaskara. “Bhagavan, I am one with You,” is a spirit of surrender, and here begins meditation on Bhagavan Vasudeva. When the Mantra is chanted you have also the requisite atmosphere created in the mind for contemplation on Bhagavan Vasudeva, to begin meditation and to feel His presence. This rule applies to all other

The Significance of Mantra-Japa

Mantras, also.

Most of you will have this practical difficulty when the Mantra is chanted and meditation begins. The mind ordinarily gets confused as to how to start, how to begin with, what to think in the mind, what to feel, etc. When you chant a Mantra you may think of the letters of the Mantra. Perhaps you may also feel that the meaning of the Mantra is ‘prostration to Bhagavan’. But how are you to proceed further? Mentally, feel that the Lord is seated or standing in front of you, and slowly, after an adequate length of time or period, you will begin to feel His Omnipresence, in front of you, to the right and to the left, above and below, and so on.

The thought of God is like a fire which will burn up all desires. The highest knowledge is nothing but the deep feeling of the presence of God everywhere. That is the highest wisdom and that will give a death-blow to other desires of the world. The desire for God is a desire to destroy all desires. It is not a desire in the ordinary sense of the term. As a single match-stick can reduce to ashes a huge mountain of straw, a single thought of the Omnipresence of God, the immanence of God and the Omnipotence of God is enough to burn up all desires pertaining to this world, because God is fulfillment of our aspiration and when we feel His presence, there need be no other desire. When we have the ocean we do not want a drop, for the drops are in the ocean. A single moment of honest, genuine deep thought of God is more than equal to the performance of several Aswamedha sacrifices, Agnishtomas, Rajasuyas and so on. It is the highest sacrifice, the highest Yajna and the greatest truth. All Sadhanas lead

to this goal of meditation and this spiritual consciousness which is the centre and the path of all meditation should animate all your activities in life. In one sense, you should be in a meditative mood always. I think this is what Bhagavan Sri Krishna means in the gospel of the Bhagavad Gita.

Though life appears to be very complicated, it would become very simple, a joyous process when you practice Japa-Sadhana. The more you practice, the greater the strength it will give you. Yesterday’s practice will give you additional strength to do practice today and today’s will give you strength tomorrow. Everyday you will

become stronger and stronger by profounder thoughts of God and

deeper contemplation on it. There is no loss of merit

in the practice, says the Bhagavad Gita. Even a little that you have done is great indeed and it is a wonderful asset which will help you in the future. May

the Almighty Lord give you strength to

do more and more Japa-Sadhana !

Indeed divine personages do incarnate to be an ideal example

in life of devotion and the fulfilment of spiritual mission. His Holiness Sri Swami Abhedanandaji Maharaj, who has completed his sixty years in spreading the Divine Name and Glories of the Almighty Lord, is such an example to many a seeker to follow in his footsteps. On the auspicious occasion of Shashtyabdapurti Mahamaham, may Lord Krishna shower His benign grace on revered Swamiji to continue his spiritual mission for many more years. May the Almighty Lord give him strength to do more and more Japa Yajnas!

MILK&

HEALTH

1. Milk is a balanced food. It contains all the nutritive principles in a well-balanced proportion. It is highly recommended not only for children but for adults also.

2. Milk has all the energy-giving nutrients, all the known vitamins and all important mineral elements. These exist in a form that admits of easy digestion and assimilation.

3. The nutritive value of milk lies in its promotion of growth and in the protection it affords against disease. It is the food provided by nature when new tissues are being formed.

4. As milk contains all the materials essential for growth and maintenance of life in a form ready for utilization by the body, it is obviously of high value.

5. Milk is ideal medium for the growth of pathogenic or disease-causing germs. All milk in the tropics should as a rule be boiled.

6. Always boil the milk before drinking. Boiled milk is free from tubercle bacilli and other germs. After boiling the milk, do not allow it to stand more that 5 hours before drinking; for disease-germs grow very rapidly in milk.

7. As milk is growth-promoting, children and adolescents, expectant and nursing mothers need it in larger quantities than others.

8. A diet of milk alone is not desirable for children, adolescents, adults. Since relatively to its bulk it is deficient in energy-giving constituents, it needs to be supplemented with iron, vitamin D and vitamin C in the form of orange juice, etc.

9. From one or two pints a day is desirable for children, about 2 pints a day for nursing and expectant mothers. A minimum of half-pint is desirable for the adult under ordinary conditions in order to secure a sufficiency of calcium and also good quantity of protein.

10. Investigations have definitely shown that milk is an essential element in the diet of children to secure optimum growth or physique and for the maintenance of health.

11. Investigations have also shown that milk is all important for the development of normal teeth resistance to dental caries.

12. It is very important to increase the milk supply in order to improve the general health of a community. It will secure better bone formation and improve physique, diminish the incidence of disease, particularly rickets and increase resistance to dental caries.

CHILDREN’S WORLD

Dear Children,Work while you work, play while you play,That is the way to be cheerful and gay.Take interest in games,Play ring tennis and badminton.Be strong, be healthy.Be good, do good.Be sincere, be truthful, O Dear!May the Lord bless your parents and all.Thy own Atman.

- Swami Sivananda

I am Laddu. I am very sweet and delicious. All love me very much. I am liked very much by children. Their mouth waters when they see me and hear my name. There is no big Bhandara or marriage-feast without me. Sadhus simply devour me voraciously.

I make a crying child laugh and dance in joy. I give life to a weak man. I become fat and flesh and-shine in the cheeks and skin. People take great care of me. They keep me in good boxes and almirah’s and big

costly vessels. I increase the value of sugar, ghee and flour of gram.

The Indweller in me is Atman or God. I cannot live without Him. If people love Him in the same way as they love me, they would have at-tained eternal bliss long, long ago.

(Swami Sivananda)AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF LADDU

RAMU WAS taking his bullock-cart to the market. Overhead an aeroplane was circling about. It seeked to mock at the poor cart moving so slowly, drawn by two bullocks.

“Oh, you slow coaches!” shouted Ramu. “Look at the aeroplane. How fast it goes! It needs no grass or fodder. I have to feed you, wash you and doctor you. Yet you don’t move fast enough”.

And he started to race his bullocks mercilessly up the rough path.

The next day the bullocks fell ill and the country doctor told Ramu that they were too tired and would not be able to work for a week.

Ramu wept bitterly on hearing the doctor. His vegetables would rot if they were not sold daily. From where would be get money for his family?

The doctor told him to push the cart himself and sell his goods. Ramu sighed, for there was nothing else he could do. He took up the loads, placed them on the cart and began to lift it slowly. It was very heavy indeed. Ramu could not push it up the road. He called out to his friend Kishen and asked for his help. Kishen said that he was too busy to come. So Ramu engaged a servant and they both managed to move the cart, but the speed

BULLOCKS

was extremely slow. Ramu’s face was covered with sweat and dust. He fretted and fumed. Overhead the aeroplane circled merrily.

Ramu said, “What is the use of that plane? It cannot go over the road. It cannot move my loads to the market”.

Then he remembered how he had overworked and over-loaded his two strong and faithful bullocks.

“God had punished me for my cruelty!” he cried.

Somehow the market was reached and the goods sold. Ramu paid the servant and returned to this hut. Fearing to go to the shed lest he should see his bullocks dead, he silently sat in a corner. His daughter Leela was carrying some hay.

He asked, “Leela, where are you taking the hay?”

“To our bullocks, of course,” said Leela. “Who else would eat hay?”

Ramu sprang up joyfully. “Give me the hay. I will feed them myself ”.

He went into the shed and found the two bullocks. For the first time he noticed how strong, beautiful and gentle they were. He stroked and massaged their legs and fed them with his hands. The doctor then arrived with some jaggery and medicines.

“Will they live? Ramu asked anxiously. The doctor only nodded and thrust the

round ball medicine down the throats of the bullocks.

He said, “Ramu, these faithful animals are our best friends. Without them we cannot live. If you foolishly treat them ill, you will be the loser.”

Ramu hung down his head in shame. After a few days, the bullocks were well enough to draw the cart. Ramu sang merrily as he saw the aeroplane. “Mock me as you will. I am no fool now. You are a butterfuly, but my bullock-cart is a busy ant”.

From that day, Ramu never overloaded the cart or over-worked his bullocks. He fed them well and they served him better than ever.

There is no superior or inferior service in Karma Yoga. There is no superiority or in-feriority among Karma Yogins. In a machine, the smallest bolt or spring is as essential to its smooth running as the mighty wheel. Similarly, in an organised effort, the man who does even the least work, or attends to an insignificant de-tail, contributes as much to the success of the endeavour as the chief organiser himself ; for, if there is some defect in even a small detail, per-fect success cannot be achieved.

A raw, untrained aspirant feels: “My pre-ceptor is treating me like a servant or a peon. He

is using me for petty jobs”. He who has under-stood the right significance of Karma Yoga will take every work as Yogic activity or worship of the Lord. There is no menial work in his vision. Every work is Puja of Narayana. In the light of Karma Yoga, all actions are sacred. That aspir-ant who always takes immense delight in doing works which are considered by the worldly man as menial services, and who always does will-ingly such acts, will become a dynamic Yogin. He will be absolutely free from conceit and ego-ism. He will have no downfall. The canker of pride cannot touch him.

No Service is Inferior
