By Sally Rummel [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Summer may be slipping away degree by degree, but Michigan residents will soon be rewarded with a breathtak- ing show of fall foliage that would rival any fireworks display. Now is the season for fall color tours, wine tours, hay- rides, cider and doughnuts, all amidst a backdrop of spectacu- lar Michigan color. However, we’ll have to wait several weeks or more, as early autumn’s warm and sunny tem- peratures have put this year’s fall color behind schedule, ac- cording to puremichigan.com. “If I had to guess, we’re not even at 10 percent (trees chang- ing color),” said Mary Carroll, president of the Benzie County Chamber of Commerce and Benzie County Visitor’s Bu- reau. “Usually by now we’re at 25 to 30 percent. NOW THAT APPLEFEST is over, I am wondering who is responsible for repair-ing all the damage to the park area lawn? There are major ruts where doz-ens of carnival folks parked their RVs along the Shiawassee, and significant damage to the lawn where fair visitors parked their cars. Who will pay for these repairs?

HILLARY CLINTON KEEPS claiming that she’s suffering from dehydration, I am older than her and a runner, and never have I been so dehydrated I passed out.

MAYOR OSBORN IS shocked that Kmart is closing? Wake up and do a tour of Fenton.

I TALKED WITH a Trump insider yester-day and she told me that he will release his tax returns at exactly the same time Hillary releases the names of her foun-dation donors.

nnn

HAPPY 37TH ANNIVERSARY Sept. 22, to my wonderful husband. You bring me such happiness. I love you.

nnn

WE ARE SEEING more bombings and killings in our country. Now we have people who are to be deported made citizens. This administration is doing things to bring harm to the people of the USA. Do you really want this to con-tinue? Think of your children and grand-children if not yourself.

nnn

I CAN SUM up Obama’s entire legacy in one word — Trump. If you are of-fended by the thought of a Trump presi-dency, thank Obama. Eight years of an-tagonistic, divisive, and anti-American rhetoric and policies are the root cause of Trump’s popularity.

nnn

CONGRATULATIONS, FENTON, FOR getting Comcast cable. We have it here in Holly. Wait until you have issues with your service. You’ll wait for over a half hour on the phone to talk to a representative from India, who you can barely understand, to get it back online, only for it to happen again.

nnn

TO ALL MY Loon Lake neighbors, next time you clean out around your dock, would you pull it out and bag it instead of shoving it out in the lake and letting your neighbors take care of it? I’m over 70 years old and now I’ve got to take care of your mess.

nnn

IN A SPEECH last weekend, Obama said that black people must vote for Hillary as a personal favor to him. He will go down in history as the most divisive president.

nnn

THE ORDEAL IN North Carolina was not a protest. It was lawless looting, burning, property destruction and violence.

nnn

I SAW THE peace sign on my way to work this morning. It was like seeing an old friend. You made my day.

nnn

HAS ANYONE EVER noticed, watching Hillary Clinton, every time she makes a statement, her head goes from left to right.

nnn

MIGHT WANT TO point out that Hillary voted for invading Iraq based on intel-ligence provided by George W. Bush and Mr. Cheney. Intelligence is a questionable word. However, that’s what it was based on.

nnn

WARREN BUFFET RECOGNIZED the term trickledown economics. It’s the rich who say, ‘just give us more money and we’ll spend more and it’ll trickle down to the rest of you.’ That hasn’t worked in the last 10 years. I hope the American public will catch on.

nnn

TYPICAL, IGNORANT, RIGHTY-tighty, do you really want to go through the expense of an impeachment trial for a president who’s only in office for a few more months? Use your head, think a little.

nnn

YOU WANT TO know what Obama has done? Take a look at gas prices, your 401K, the stock market, and employ-ment just to name a few. He’s trying to downgrade the war, all things a certain Republican president got us into.

nnn

YOU DO REALIZE there are more amendments to the constitution than just the second amendment, right? Why do you think it’s OK for someone to walk around with a deadly weapon, yet a black man can’t take a knee during the National Anthem. I’m not sure I agree with him, but it’s his right.

nnn

A WONDERFUL THING happened in 1994, when Republicans took over the Senate and the Congress when Clinton was in office. The Republicans cut taxes, cut spending, cut welfare, improved the economy, and unemploy-ment dropped to 4 percent. That’s why Clinton looks so good on paper.

nnn

I FELT IT necessary to look up the definition of political correctness. The definition is inoffensive, not discrimina-tory, unbiased and appropriate. I think some people ought to think about it.

nnn

DID YOU KNOW that of all the Syrian refugees that Obama brought into our country, one out of five are going to New York. Then Michigan is the second largest destination against the will of the people and governor.

nnn

YOU’LL FIND POLITICAL correctness probably in the constitution if your read close enough. You won’t find it on a ballot. It’s like common sense, which ap-parently some people don’t have.

Q: My PCV valve rattles loudly while engine is at idle. I’ve replaced it three times.

What could be the problem? - Aaron

Aaron, The first thing I ask is, are you using an OEM qual-

ity PCV valve (meaning A/C Delco or from the dealer)? We see a lot of aftermarket PCV valves cause problems. Next thing that comes to mind is to check the port where the PCV hose hooks to the engine. Make sure it is clear and getting full vacuum. Other than these items, try a good cleaning of the throttle bore and check the timing if it is adjustable.

Gay rights In the 2004 vice presidential debate, Dick Cheney, who has a gay daughter, was asked about gay rights. He didn’t mention his daughter once. However, his opponent, John Edwards did, and praised Cheney and his wife for loving their daughter. Cheney was furious.

8 memorable moments at

PRESIDENTIAL

DEBATESBy Hannah [email protected]; 810-433-6792 On Monday, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump faced off at their first of three debates. Throughout the 90-plus minutes of interruptions, speaking over each other, avoiding questions, and changing the subject, the two made history as the first woman and first non-politician to debate for the presidency. Here are eight memorable moments from past presidential debates:Source: Time.com

“I knew Jack Kennedy”

Perhaps one of the most well-known moments happened during a vice presi-dential debate. In 1988, when Michael Dukakis’ running mate Lloyd Bentsen debated George H. W. Bush’s running mate Dan Quayle. Quayle brought up Jack Kennedy during the debate, trying to make

himself seem s imi la r, and Bentsen told Quayle “Sena-tor, you’re no Jack Kennedy.”

The nod

The blooper heard around the world

Age matters

In 1976, during the Jimmy Carter vs. Gerald R. Ford debate, Ford declared that there was no total Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. At the time, every Eastern Europe coun-try was definitely Soviet controlled. This was known as one of the biggest gaffes at any presidential debate.

In 1984, during the Ronald Reagan vs. Walter Mondale race, people were worried Reagan was getting too old to adequately serve as president. During the debate, Reagan turned it around on Mondale and said he’s not going to exploit Mondale’s youth and inexperience to win.

In 1988, Democratic con-tender Michael Dukakis was asked if he would seek the death penalty if his wife was raped and murdered. Everyone expected an emotional answer, but

s o u r c e s reported that he gave a pas-sionless answer stat-ing that he would not seek capital punishment because there were more effective options.

No emotion

"Who am I?"

“Say it ain’t so, Joe” In 2008, during the vice presidential debate, Sarah Palin asked Joe Biden if she could call him Joe. He said yes, and she used the line later “Say it ain’t so, Joe.” Palin did better than people expected, and Biden did not insult her.

ontheissues.org

In 1992, Ross Perot’s run-ning mate Admiral Stockdale

made the mistake of trying to be so humble and said, “Who am I? Why am I here?” He had a reputation of being a confused old man, so this phrase went down in history.

In 2000, during the Al Gore vs. George W. Bush debate, Gore stood up at one point, and many thought he was going to try to intimidate Bush. Bush simply nodded at him and continued what he was saying. thisdayinquotes.com

FALL COLORSContinued from Page 1B Pops of fall color are just beginning to advance across the Upper Peninsula, but the latest fall color updates show that real peak color even in the U.P. is still about a week away. If you’re planning a trip past the Mackinac Bridge, you’ll find peak color the weekend of Oct. 8-9, with late sea-son peak color the following weekend, Oct. 15-16. You can treat yourself to fall chairlift rides at Porcupine Mountains Ski Area, which runs the lifts each Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 7 p.m. through the first three weeks of October, according to.www.newsupnorth.com/fall/. Colder nights with temperatures in the 30s and 40s will help get the color show started throughout the rest of Michigan. This colder air will shut down the green-producing chlorophyll in the leaves, al-lowing the underlying color pigments to show through. These deep reds, bright oranges and sunny yellows will provide a majestic contrast to the beautiful blue waters of Michigan’s Great Lakes, inland lakes and flowing rivers. Then later in the fall, as temperatures continue to drop, trees will shed their leaves to allow the tree to save as much water as possible to survive winter. You’ll find fall color throughout Michigan for about a month, but many people do enjoy heading north to catch the show a little early. “Every Saturday in October, you can ride the chairlift at Crystal Mountain Ski Resort for $7 a person,” said Carroll. “Even if the color isn’t at peak when you come, there’s still plenty to do. There’s something going on in Frankfort every weekend.” One popular Michigan destination, Traverse City, has been named one of America’s Top 10 Fall Foliage Destina-tions, honored among such well-known

‘‘ If I had to guess, we’re not even at 10

percent (trees changing color). Usually by now

we’re at 25 to 30 percent. I’d say peak color will be

later in October.’’Mary CarrollBenzie County Chamber of Commerce and Benzie County Visitor’s Bureau

Scenic drives in northern Michigan• M-22 Color Tour is one of the most scenic fall drives in Michigan. It winds for 116 miles through the countryside of Benzie, Manistee and Leelanau counties.• Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City is a 20-mile long and three-mile wide drive with beauti-ful views of both sides of the bay, dotted with wineries and vineyards along the way, including Black Star Farms and Chateau Grand Traverse.• Leelenau Peninsula, which juts 30 miles into Lake Michigan, is known for its scenic views and wineries.• Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was voted “The Most Beautiful Place in America” by a poll from ABC-TV’s Good Morning America. This gem includes 64 miles of beaches, two islands, 26 inland lakes and 50,000 acres of land.• A 69-mile circle around the Chain of Lakes, beginning and ending in Elk Rapids is a popular choice. The route’s crown jewel is Torch Lake, according to Traverse magazine.• Forest Lakes Area, with high elevations south of Traverse City offers beautiful colors.

Other scenic views in the Grand Traverse Bay area include the 20 miles of Old Mission Peninsula orchards and wineries, Michigan’s largest and oldest wine trail along the Leelanau Peninsula, Antrim County’s Chain of Lakes region and U.S. 31 north from Traverse City to Elk Rapids. One of the most scenic fall drives in Michigan is the M-22 Color Tour, which winds for 116 miles through the country-side of Benzie, Manistee and Leelanau counties. Visitors can explore the Lake Michigan shoreline, climb the Sleeping Bear Dunes and enjoy art galleries, win-ing and dining. This area of Michigan is so popular in the fall that it even has its own website: m22colortour.com.

Friend’s elder assessmentnot well receivedDEAR AMY: When my late father was ill, I always appreciated hearing comments from friends who visited Dad, since I didn’t live with him. It helped me adjust the level of care and change what I did for him. I’ve had two occasions where I have noticed some concerning things about the parents of two of my friends. I shared my observations with these friends, and neither received it very well. Mostly they were shocked to find out their parents were exhibiting odd behavior or had such strong dementia they could be a driving hazard. I truly felt that I was helping the greater good by mentioning to their families what I had noticed, or been told, or experienced. I think something had to be said. I was kind and factual. One friend has completely stopped speaking to me, and the second one decidedly cooled our long friendship. In the future, I honestly don’t know what to do. — Concerned in CA

DEAR CONCERNED: You mention passing along things you “had

noticed, or been told, or experienced.” There is a big difference between reporting something you have personally observed, versus something you have been told. In the first case, you are a first-person witness. In the second, you are a gossip. You should re-examine how you are delivering this news. Being kind and factual is great. But you should start by preparing the person for the news by demonstrating that you understand how challenging it can be to receive it. For example:

“When my father was becoming more frail, I really appreciated learning what other people observed when they saw him. Sometimes it was hard, because I wasn’t there to see for myself. I just visited with your dad and noticed some things. Do you want me to share this with you?” The person may not be prepared in that moment to talk about it, but might later. Offer assurances: “I just want you to know, I’ve been there. I know it’s hard.”

Heart disease can have few or no symptomsDEAR DR. ROACH: I recently went to my family doctor, complaining of left-arm pain and heartburn-like pain in my throat area. He said that he could admit me to the hospital for two days of testing or that it could be a pinched nerve in my neck. It was my choice not to go to the hospital, so he recommended meloxicam for a possible pinched nerve. As it turns out, my symptoms later became so uncomfortable that I decided to go to the ER three days after seeing my doctor. It was a serious blockage of a main artery to my heart, and emergency surgery was performed to put a stent in. I am lucky to have made it in time. I realize that it was my decision to not be admitted — I guess I was in denial. I never thought to ask him if he could have given me an electrocardiogram there in his office, and some people, including my intensive-care nurse, asked why he didn’t. Because he didn’t offer to test me in his office, I am considering changing doctors. I like him and he has always given me good care in the past, so I’m not sure what to do. I feel that had he done the ECG that day, my problem could have been diagnosed much sooner and possibly prevented my heart attack. Why wouldn’t he have checked my heart function right there with the electrocardiogram? He did check my blood pressure and listened to my heart, but those seemed to be normal. Can you give me your opinion on this? I am a 64-year-old male. — F.M.

ANSWER: Without being there, I can’t give an opin-ion on whether your doctor should have

insisted on your being admitted to the hospital, but I am printing your letter to once again em-phasize that heart disease, even serious blockages, can have minimal or no symptoms. It sounds like your doctor did suspect heart disease, and I bet he now regrets not insist-ing that you be admitted. It’s a judgment call, and you have to consider not only the symptoms, but also the risk factors. Just being a 64-year-old man is a risk factor; if you

had other risks, such as elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, a history of smoking or a family history of heart disease, that would make heart disease more likely. The electrocardiogram is not a perfect test, and although it might have been abnormal at the time, it also is possible that it could have been perfectly normal. In hindsight, I wonder if your knowing your EKG was normal would have kept you from going to the emergency room when you did. To me, this isn’t so egregious that I would suggest you find a different doctor, but only you can decide whether you still have confi-dence in him. READERS: Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer. Chocolate Almond Breakfast CookiesChocolate Almond Breakfast Cookies are loaded with dark chocolate chips, almonds and coconut. They also contain some better-for-you cookie ingredients like whole wheat flour, natural almond butter and flaxseed meal. Sugar can be lessened and substituted with a bit of honey.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Line baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Add almonds to a food processor bowl and

pulse until the almonds are ground into almond flour.

3. In a medium bowl, mix the ground almonds, rolled oats, whole wheat flour, flax meal, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon until thoroughly combined.

4. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, combine the almond butter, coconut oil, honey, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.

5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.

6. Stir in the coconut, sliced almonds and dark chocolate chips.

7. Use a medium cookie scoop (about 1 1/2 tablespoons) to scoop the dough onto prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.

8. Bake in the preheated oven from 8-9 minutes, or until golden brown.

9. The cookies do not flatten much while baking, so you can use a spatula to flatten them out a bit if you want a flatter cookie.

10. Allow the cookies to cool on the pans for about 5 minutes before removing them to a wire rack to cool completely.
