several weeks or more, as early autumn’s warm and sunny tem-peratures have put this year’s fall color behind schedule, ac-cording to puremichigan.com. “If I had to guess, we’re not even at 10 percent (trees chang-ing color),” said Mary Carroll, president of the Benzie County Chamber of Commerce and Benzie County Visitor’s Bu-reau. “Usually by now we’re at 25 to 30 percent. I’d say peak color will be later in October.”

Aaron, The first thing I ask is, are you using an OEM qual-

ity PCV valve (meaning A/C Delco or from the dealer)? We see a lot of aftermarket PCV valves cause problems. Next thing that comes to mind is to check the port where the PCV hose hooks to the engine. Make sure it is clear and getting full vacuum. Other than these items, try a good cleaning of the throttle bore and check the timing if it is adjustable.

William (Bill) Richard McDunnough1936-2016 William (Bill) Richard McDunnough - age 80, of Hartland, died Monday, September 26, 2016 at his

home on Lake Tyrone, surround-ed by his children, Kathleen, Kevin and Darren. Bill was

born September 21, 1936 in Duluth, MN the son of Wil-liam Gorrie and Ruth Myrtle (Parish) McDunnough. He was preceded in death on May 20, 2016, by his wife Margaret (Peg) McDun-nough of 57 years. He is survived by three children, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers Bill requested donations be made to Salvation Army, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association. Dennis William Berry 1949-2016 Dennis William Berry - age 67, of Linden, passed peacefully at home on Sep-tember 26, 2016. He was incredibly proud of his two

daugh-ters, Jordan Mul-lins and Lauren Berry, and is also survived by his

siblings, Deborah Wheeler (Jon), Cynthia Stach, Rodney Berry; nieces Kristina Daniels and Merisa Berry; and great-niece and nephew Madison and Jacob. Dennis was born February 23, 1949 in Flint, and dedicated himself to more than 35 years of service in both teaching and coaching. Outside of school he enjoyed golf-ing, skiing at Nubs Nob with family, or enjoying the writings of Hemingway, Emerson, or Thoreau. Stu-dents and peers recall him as a remarkable teacher of literature, expecting the best from those that passed through his class-room. Friend’s elder assessmentnot well receivedDEAR AMY: When my late father was ill, I always appreciated hearing comments from friends who visited Dad, since I didn’t live with him. It helped me adjust the level of care and change what I did for him. I’ve had two occasions where I have noticed some concerning things about the parents of two of my friends. I shared my observations with these friends, and neither received it very well. Mostly they were shocked to find out their parents were exhibiting odd behavior or had such strong dementia they could be a driving hazard. I truly felt that I was helping the greater good by mentioning to their families what I had noticed, or been told, or experienced. I think something had to be said. I was kind and factual. One friend has completely stopped speaking to me, and the second one decidedly cooled our long friendship. In the future, I honestly don’t know what to do. — Concerned in CA

DEAR CONCERNED: You mention passing along things you “had

noticed, or been told, or experienced.” There is a big difference between reporting something you have personally observed, versus something you have been told. In the first case, you are a first-person witness. In the second, you are a gossip. You should re-examine how you are delivering this news. Being kind and factual is great. But you should start by preparing the person for the news by demonstrating that you understand how challenging it can be to receive it. For example:

“When my father was becoming more frail, I really appreciated learning what other people observed when they saw him. Sometimes it was hard, because I wasn’t there to see for myself. I just visited with your dad and noticed some things. Do you want me to share this with you?” The person may not be prepared in that moment to talk about it, but might later. Offer assurances: “I just want you to know, I’ve been there. I know it’s hard.”

Heart disease can have few or no symptomsDEAR DR. ROACH: I recently went to my family doctor, complaining of left-arm pain and heartburn-like pain in my throat area. He said that he could admit me to the hospital for two days of testing or that it could be a pinched nerve in my neck. It was my choice not to go to the hospital, so he recommended meloxicam for a possible pinched nerve. As it turns out, my symptoms later became so uncomfortable that I decided to go to the ER three days after seeing my doctor. It was a serious blockage of a main artery to my heart, and emergency surgery was performed to put a stent in. I am lucky to have made it in time. I realize that it was my decision to not be admitted — I guess I was in denial. I never thought to ask him if he could have given me an electrocardiogram there in his office, and some people, including my intensive-care nurse, asked why he didn’t. Because he didn’t offer to test me in his office, I am considering changing doctors. I like him and he has always given me good care in the past, so I’m not sure what to do. I feel that had he done the ECG that day, my problem could have been diagnosed much sooner and possibly prevented my heart attack.Why wouldn’t he have checked my heart function right there with the electrocardiogram? He did check my blood pressure and listened to my heart, but those seemed to be normal. Can you give me your opinion on this? I am a 64-year-old male. — F.M.

ANSWER: Without being there, I can’t give an opin-ion on whether your doctor should have

insisted on your being admitted to the hospital, but I am printing your letter to once again em-phasize that heart disease, even serious blockages, can have minimal or no symptoms. It sounds like your doctor did suspect heart disease, and I bet he now regrets not insist-ing that you be admitted. It’s a judgment call, and you have to consider not only the symptoms, but also the risk factors. Just being a 64-year-old man is a risk factor; if you

had other risks, such as elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, a history of smoking or a family history of heart disease, that would make heart disease more likely. The electrocardiogram is not a perfect test, and although it might have been abnormal at the time, it also is possible that it could have been perfectly normal. In hindsight, I wonder if your knowing your EKG was normal would have kept you from going to the emergency room when you did. To me, this isn’t so egregious that I would suggest you find a different doctor, but only you can decide whether you still have confi-dence in him. READERS: Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer. Chocolate Almond Breakfast CookiesChocolate Almond Breakfast Cookies are loaded with dark chocolate chips, almonds and coconut. They also contain some better-for-you cookie ingredients like whole wheat flour, natural almond butter and flaxseed meal. Sugar can be lessened and substituted with a bit of honey.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Line baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Add almonds to a food processor bowl and

pulse until the almonds are ground into almond flour.

3. In a medium bowl, mix the ground almonds, rolled oats, whole wheat flour, flax meal, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon until thoroughly combined.

4. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, combine the almond butter, coconut oil, honey, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.

5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.

6. Stir in the coconut, sliced almonds and dark chocolate chips.

7. Use a medium cookie scoop (about 1 1/2 tablespoons) to scoop the dough onto prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.

8. Bake in the preheated oven from 8-9 minutes, or until golden brown.

9. The cookies do not flatten much while baking, so you can use a spatula to flatten them out a bit if you want a flatter cookie.

10. Allow the cookies to cool on the pans for about 5 minutes before removing them to a wire rack to cool completely.
